Views of Freedom
Views of Freedom
05/17/2004 12:13 AMThe recent
relea
se of MT3.0 has provoked a whole lot of smart commentary around
the net over the past few days: for example see Simon Phipps (
here
and
here
a>) and Alan
Bleaklow. But the one that hit me hardest is Mark Pilgrim’s
Freedom
0. This piece has been criticized (correctly) as disconnected from
the way consumer software works (summary: users pay for features). And
indeed, Mark doesn’t think about this the way a consumer would: how
many of them run eleven sites? Instead, he thinks about this like
a CIO does .
“Freedom 0” is all about predictability and risk reduction; CIO
territory, big-time. Mark carries the argument to extremes because
that’s the kind of writer he is, but it’s an argument everyone in
the software business should be thinking about.

05/12/2004 11:16 PMWhat happened was, tired in an airport looking for lightweight
reading, I grabbed
The Last Defender of Camelot,
collected late works of Roger Zelazny, who was at the centre of the
SciFi universe a few decades back. It has a piece called
24
Views of Mount Fuji, by Hokusai which won a Hugo in 1986 and as
a story is only OK but as a narrative wrapped around a famous set of
pictures it’s awfully good. On impulse, I typed “hokusai 24”
into Google, to discover that there are 36 pictures in the original
series, but that Tim Eagen, back in ’98, poked around the Web and
ass
embled the 24 images from the Zelazny story; a fine piece of
curatorship and really an essential companion to reading the story.
Looking at one of them, I thought:
I’ve been there. There’s
an amusing narrative to accompany the views...

AirPort Express: Three Views
AirPort Express: Three Views
07/22/2004 06:09 PMApple's AirPort Express may quickly become one of the most reviewed
pieces of new wireless technology: It will receive many reviews for
several reasons, including the fact that it's the smallest Wi-Fi
gateway (when you include its built-in power supply); it's the only
one to stream audio in the particular way it does; it includes several
interesting features in one wrapper; it's relatively cheap for any two
of its four unique set features*. It's also from Apple and had 80,000
pre-orders, so it's a natural. (Amazon.com now shows it not first
arriving until August 1, and other sources indicate a three-week
backorder. But the Apple Store in Seattle says they should have
another supply any day now.) I've been working with an AirPort Express
for a few days, and it's just about as easy to setup and use as Apple
promises. There are no obscure settings. Joining an existing AirPort
Extreme network was a snap. So was reconfiguring it as a base station
and assigning it a WPA encryption key. So was playing music through
its attached speakers from any copy of iTunes anywhere in our
wired/Wi-Fi office. My officemates threatened to play strange music
into the speakers in my office, as any copy of iTunes can use any set
of AirPort Express speakers on a network unless you password protect
access to the speakers. Three reviews check in today from
well-respected sources. David Pogue walks through the pros and cons of
the device in The New York Times, and comes down reasonably heavy on
the pro side. He misses having a remote control and notes that it's
odd you can't play through several sets of speakers at once each
connected to their own AirPort Express as you can with other devices.
The total of the parts in one well-designed package adds to a winner
for him, however. He notes that you'd need two or three other devices
to come close to the Express--and in that comparison, he leaves out
the Express's client mode (to connect for streaming/printer sharing to
any Wi-Fi network) and its USB printer sharing, which is an expensive
stand-alone add-on for 802.11g networks. Walt Mossberg's take was
substantially more negative because of a few flaws he felt were
significant. He finds the lack of a remote-control a total
showstopper, and I admit that that was one of my reactions on first
hearing about AirTunes streaming music....

Two early views of income tax...
Two early views of income tax...
10/29/2003 12:10 AMThanks to Radio 4 for
these two early positions on Income Tax. Nicholas Vansittart, who was
Chancellor of the Exchequer in 1816 put the case for the tax:
"This tax would press less on the lower orders of society
than any tax which could be devised... It was a tax more upon the rich
than upon the poor... When the act was revised, it would be found the
least oppressive and the least objectionable of any tax that had ever
been imposed..."
And a petition for the Corporation of London put the opposing
view:
"Painful experience has only served the more strongly to
root upon their minds a conviction of its injustice, vexation and
oppression ... the manner in which the said tax is carried into
execution, by means of an odious, arbitrary and detestable inquisition
into the most private concerns and circumstances of individuals, is
still more vexatious, unjust and oppressive, hostile to every sense of
freedom, revolting to the feelings of Englishmen, and repugnant to the
principles of the British Constitution; ... the petitioners are deeply
sensible of the depressed state of the agricultural interests, and of
the ruinous effect of such a burden thereon; ... the manufacturing and
trading interests are equally depressed, and equally borne down with
the weight of taxation ... and they confidently hoped, that by such
reductions in the public expenditure... and the abolishing of all
unnecessary places, pensions and sinecures, there would have been no
pretence for the continuation of a tax subversive of freedom, and
destructive of the peace and happiness of the people. [Petition to
Parliament from the Corporation of London]
Perhaps unsurprisingly, given the sheer number of people in
government with a vested interest in not pay lots of tax, the
government was defeated by a huge majority. Read more about the whole
debacle: The Repeal of Income Tax.
