Project Columbia : NASA gets a new Super
Computer
08/09/2004 01:28 PM
One of the conclusions from the report into the 2003 space shuttle disaster was that NASA lacked enough computing power. As such, NASA have decided to invest in a massive Linux based cluster of computers, to patch over it's IT requirement problems. The computer will be based on SGI Altix computers, each with 1,000Gb of memory, and 20x512 Intel Itanium 2 processors (10,240 in total). It will uses SGI switching technology, and have in total 500 terabytes of storage. The whole system will increase NASA's IT computing base by 10 times.

Unlike previous super computers, 'Project Columbia', as it will be formally known, will be built with 'off the shelf' kit (akin to the GIT Apple Cluster), making it a lot cheaper than the previous generation of super computers, and a lot faster to assemble. Richard Dracott, from Intel's enterprise platforms group said "This is the epitome of change in supercomputing." In total, the project cost will be about $160 million; the computer will be made available to other government agencies to help off set the high price tag.

The computer will be used for mission planning and working on other complex models, such as climate change and physics calculations, like gravity modelling. When built, it will be one of the largest Linux super computers / clusters in the world.
