Microsoft Takes On MikeRoweSoft
Microsoft Takes On MikeRoweSoft
01/19/2004 01:44 AMI'm surprised this one hasn't gotten more attention yet (though, it
probably will). A kid in Canada named Mike Rowe needed a name for his
website design business, and picked the somewhat obvious choice:
MikeRoweSoft.com. The legal folks at a company you might have heard
of, Microsoft, didn't take too kindly to that, and sent the typical
threatening legal
letter. They offered Mr. Rowe a whopping $10 for the domain. He
wrote back saying $10,000 seemed more appropriate - and now Microsoft
is accusing him of holding the domain hostage to try to get money out
of Microsoft. I read the story a few times before I actually believed
it. Even the name of the Microsoft law firm involved in this case
(Smart & Biggar) made me wonder if it's all a big hoax - but it all
seems real enough. Before the legal beagles chip in with the point
that Microsoft needs to do this to protect their trademark, I'll
respond by saying that this should be a perfect example of why that
rule doesn't make much sense. How many people are actually going to
confuse MikeRoweSoft with Microsoft? If anything, Mr. Rowe is going
to have more trouble getting people to remember what
his domain
name is - as he's going to need to spell it out to everyone. However,
as a publicity stunt for Mr. Rowe's web design business, this is
probably going to help him out quite a bit.

Microsoft Takes Aim At Intuit Again
12/06/2003 04:30 PMMicrosoft is hoping Magellan can take it where Microsoft Profit and

accounting, a market dominated by Intuit's QuickBooks.
After several failed attempts, the software giant will once again make
a foray into small business accounting with a project code-named
Magellan, sources said.
Details are sketchy. A Microsoft spokeswoman confirmed the code name,
and said the company continues to investigate the best ways to serve
small businesses, but that it is too early to talk product plans.

Adobe Photoshop CS2 and Adobe Bridge
Adobe Photoshop CS2 and Adobe Bridge
06/17/2005 07:13 PMFor most graphic artists, Adobe's applications are their bread and
butter. Adobe Creative Suite 2 recently hit the streets, but is it
worth paying the price to upgrade? We have a comprehensive look at
Photoshop CS2 along with Bridge, an image browser which "connects" the
Creative Suite 2 applications.
In Photoshop 7, Adobe added a file browser to Photoshop
and let it chill for two versions seeing if it would get better with
age (it didn't). It was a good idea but weird in Photoshop, a really
document-centric program. Now, they've taken it out of Photoshop, made
it an independent program to act as a connector between apps much like
say, a concrete passageway or a road above water.
It makes a lot more sense this way since it was really out of place
as a floating window inside the Photoshop interface. Adobe has added a
favorites and collections pane in addition to the basic file system
browsing, chocked it full of features to interact with other Adobe
apps and added an interactive thumbnail zoom that works much like
iPhoto's.
Of course, there are plenty of other apps on both Windows and Mac
OS X that perform the same function (GraphicConverter represent!). Is
the combination of some spiffy new features in Photoshop CS2 and the
new Bridge enough to make an upgrade worthwhile? There's only one way
to find out...

Adobe to buy Macromedia I almost choked when I saw this
press release, Adobe is going to buy out Macromedia for $3.4 billion
in stock. Adobe is paying about $9 over the current share price, which
means the investors will make out nicely. With the two largest design
software companies becoming one, the new Adobe will be a monopoly (if
it isn't already with Photoshop). I just hope they remove the ability
to make really annoying Flash movies...

Adobe to buy Macromedia!
Adobe to buy Macromedia!
04/18/2005 04:25 AMA blockbuster sized story just broke--Macromedia will be
bought out by graphics giant Adobe. Between the two
companies, nearly 100% of people in the design industry use at least
one of their products. The $3.4 billion deal has been approved by
execs from both companies. Here are the specs:
Under the terms of the agreement, which has been approved
by both boards of directors, Macromedia stockholders will receive, at
a fixed exchange ratio, 0.69 shares of Adobe common stock for every
share of Macromedia common stock in a tax-free exchange. Based on
Adobe's and Macromedia's closing prices on Friday, April 15, 2005,
this represents a price of $41.86 per share of Macromedia common
stock. Upon the close of the transaction, Macromedia stockholders will
own approximately 18 percent of the combined company on a pro forma
basis.
Shares of Macromedia [
MACR] closed at
$33.45 Friday, making Adobe's bid a large premium.
The real story here is the massive market share Adobe will control in
the creative industry. Besides video and out of date print publishing,
they have it wrapped up. What are your thoughts? Sound off!
(Personally I thought I read the headline wrong...)

Adobe + Macromedia = ?
Adobe + Macromedia = ?
04/18/2005 09:21 PMSeems straightforward to me. Adobe is in at the center of print
production (PhotoShop & friends, InDesign, PDF), while
Macromedia’s DreamWeaver is the single most important Web-design
product. Dave
Shea says this might be about Flash, but let me suggest exactly
the opposite: if you’re hitching your career to Flash, it might be a
good time to look at alternatives. Why’s that? Because, near as I
can tell, Macromedia has never made any serious money with Flash.
They’ve accomplished one of the great, heroic, marketing coups of
all time, getting the plug-in onto substantially every desktop on the
planet; and this bought them, uh, what exactly? They sell authoring
tools, but seriously, how many Flash designers does the world need?
Anyhow, most of the good things you can do with Flash, you can do
about as well with DHTML (oops that’s called AJAX now) and your
“back” button still works. I guess there’s no reason to
actually shut Flash down, the tool revenue must about cover the
engineering costs. But Adobe, historically, has been good at focusing
on what works and dropping the distractions. (Can you remember
PageMill?) Flash is a distraction.
