A deal that's been in the offing for at least a year has now become reality in the wireless device world. Finland-based Nokia, the world's largest maker of cell phones, Monday agreed to acquire Psion's 31.1 percent ownership of Symbian, which makes the "smartphone" operating system most Nokia cell phones use.

Nokia's Control of Symbian Blocked 07/07/2004 11:33 AM

symbian_top-logo.gif imageAnd while we're on the subject of Symbian, Reuters has confirmed that a shares redistribution and rights issue will rearrange the corporate control of Symbian, keeping Nokia's stake in the company under the controlling 50 percent. So yeah, that's boring, but probably good -- it means that Symbian won't become a Nokia-only company, and the other participants, like founder Psion, Sony Ericsson, Siemens, Samsung, and Matsushita will get their fair share of attention. It also means Psion is about 92 million dollars richer, money they plan to use to expand their staff.

Rumor Control: Nokia N-Gage Not Being
Pulled From Stores

Rumor Control: Nokia N-Gage Not Being
Pulled From Stores
08/04/2004 09:57 AM

http://www.gizmodo.com/archives/images/ngage_qd1.jpg imageSo a rumor has been going around that Electronics Boutique had been instructed to pull the Nokia N-Gage QD, the updated version of the ill-fated original N-Gage. Shipping units back to the factory is never good; however, it's not nearly as bad as some are letting on (N-Gage being pulled completely from market entirely, etc.). According to our sources inside EB (the guy I called and asked), the first shipment of N-Gage QDs with T-Mobile service had a somewhat convoluted sign-up process on the phone -- convoluted enough that many people couldn't get their accounts activated. The first batch was shipped back, updated with easier sign-up software (like later models already had), and shipped back to the ElBos for sale.

So yeah, not the end of the world. I'm sort of disappointed, too. (Not that I hate the QD -- it's actually sort of nice -- but I lament any lost opportunity to pick on N-Gage.)

NOKIA_7280.jpg imageOkay, so Nokia just dropped three phones onto us, and they're pretty crazy, and by 'crazy' I mean 'sort of ugly.' I have to cop to sort of liking the Tron-style and the asymetrical design - the one round corner, one square corner 'new Nokia' look - but I have a feeling I'll be in the minority. Would it kill them to just release a nice, silver phone that you could take home to mom?

Anyway, here's the breakdown, and I'll probably go after this post in a couple of waves. The one pictured here is the Nokia 7280, which you might notice doesn't have a keypad. That's because Nokia designed it to be "sleek," "sexy," and "edgy." (I'm not joking.)
