Wave
Messaging
From the company that pioneered text messaging, picture messaging
and multimedia messaging, comes new innovation - Wave Messaging, or
Light Messaging, according to a Nokia press release
By waving the Nokia 3220
camera phone from side to side, the LED lights of the Nokia Xpress-on
FunShell light up to "write" a message that appears to float in
mid-air.
Related articles on airtexting-type technologies:
-- In March 2003, the WSJ reported from CeBIT about a phone called
Kurv, made by Kyocera Wireless Corp which featured airtexting: "The
company believes airtexti
ng will be one of it's most popular features, especialy in night
clubs. To airtext, you type in a text like 'call me' then wave it back
and forth in the air. As the phone moves, a row of blinking red lights
along the top of the phone leaves the phrase trailing behind it."
-- A company called Wildseed actually tested
airtexti
ng with teenagers.
If they made an airtexting enabled
BlackBerry, I wonder if they would allow them in Congress. With the
massiv
e penetration of BlackBerries, it would be like a chorus of
Hecklebots. Anyway, I want one. Forget night
clubs, imaging having one in the audience during talks.

A hacker's introduction to OS X
01/08/2004 08:34 PMWhat is Max OS X
by Amit Singh is hands down the best introduction to that operating
system I've ever come across. It's aimed at a technical audience, does
a very good job of keeping a fair balance balanced when comparing OS X
with other operating systems and has taught me a whole bunch of
interesting things about the system.
Some highlights:
The rest of the author's site (which bares a striking resemblance
to Eric Meyer's classic stylesheet) is worth exploring as well - he
has some fascinating notes on
advanced Mac programming, a description of his environment of 55 operating systems on one PowerBook and for the hard
core programming geeks, 108 solutions to the Towers of Hanoi problem.
And if that's not enough, he even has a genuine Donald Knuth reward
cheque as well!
As for my own PowerBook, it was due to arrive today but my bank
killed the card transaction because it didn't fit my normal buying
habits (I'd like to know who's buying habits it would fit).
After a series of transatlantic phone calls and the classic statement
from HSBC that "you're not supposed to have credit on a credit card"
all is well in the world, and the system should arrive tomorrow or
Friday. I await its arrival with sticky palms.

goto or gosub to bare labels. Go figure....

Sony NAS-CZ1 Streams iTunes, Windows
Media
04/18/2005 08:22 AM
Details are lean at the moment, but T3 has information about
a new desktop audio system from Sony that can stream not only MP3s,
but WMA and AAC as well. If Sony supports the DRM schemes from Apple
and Microsoft, the NAS-CZ1 will be the first device I can recall that
is able to play both types of DRM-locked music. Of course, they could
just be talking about streaming unencumbered media files—we
don't even have a proper list of specifications or price yet.

New Sony Cybershots, HP Photosmarts,

08/30/2004 09:56 AM
Gott im Himmel, ze cameras! There have been like
two dozen new cameras announced in the last few weeks as various
manufacturers start ramping up for Christmas, and Sony and HP are no
exception. Among the new Sonys announced today are two pocket-sized
beauties that I want right now: the T3, an update to the T1 and
Japan-only T11, a 5.1-megapixel camera that is Sony's thinnest at less
than three-quarters of an inch; and the DSC-L1, a candy bar
4.1-megapixel unit that is only 3.75-inches long. Just when I was
ready to buy a new camera Sony has to muck it all up with at least two
that really do it for me. Oh, and there's also the new DSC-V3, a
7-megapixel unit that looks mighty fine, as well.
The HPs, well, they are okay, but I'll be honest, they don't get me
all riled up as much as the two featherweight cameras from Sony do. If
they fixed the middling image quality of the T1 in the T3, that may be
my next sidearm. Living Room has a bunch of the press releases, and
I'll add to this post if any more info comes through during the
day.

NTSC-J, PAL, and SECAM TV Tuner Hotfix
for DirectX 9.0b on Windows 2000,
Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003
(KB825116)
11/04/2003 11:37 PMDirectX 9.0b was released on 7/23/03 to address the MIDI security
issue identified in bulletin MS03-030. A small number of non-security
fixes were also included in the release. One of these fixes caused
several TV Tuner capture card/driver combinations using video formats
other than NTSC (NTSC-J, PAL, SECAM) to no longer initialize correctly
on Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003. Symptoms include
loss of capture functionality and potential inability to set/retain
device capture settings. This hotfix, documented further in Knowledge
Base article 825116, has been issued to correct the flaw.
11-04-03 update: The English hotfix package has been modified to allow
patching of all language installations supported by the affected
Operating Systems.

While Sony Tries To Become Apple,
Samsung Tries To Become Sony
05/13/2004 03:41 AMHas anyone noticed that it's becoming increasingly difficult to tell
Samsung from Sony? It appears that almost everything Sony does,
Samsung does as well. So, it's really no surprise that a little over
a month after Sony announced plans to
build
out retail stores more for advertising than for sales,
Samsung plans to
do the same thing. Of course, while Sony says they're more
interested in using the stores for advertising, Samsung has gone one
step further. They believe so strongly that this "store" is just for
advertising that
they won't sell you anything at the store.
It's for showcasing products only. Also, a random note in the
article, but the same week that Sony and Nintendo announced their
plans for their next generation handheld gaming devices, this article
also mentions that Samsung is planning for its own N-Gage like
phone/gaming device. Apparently, the dismal failure of the N-Gage
isn't enough to scare them off.

Toolkit to Temporarily Block Delivery of
Windows XP SP2 to a PC Through Automatic
Updates and Windows
08/11/2004 01:18 AMWhile recognizing the security benefits of Windows XP SP2, some
organizations have requested the ability to temporarily disable
delivery of this update via Automatic Updates (AU) and Windows Update
(WU). These organizations have populations of PCs, upon which they
have enabled AU. This is done to ensure that these PCs receive all
critical security updates. Since SP2 will start to be delivered to PCs
running Windows XP or Windows XP with SP1 via AU starting on August
16, these customers would like to temporarily block the delivery of
SP2 in order to provide additional time for validation and testing of
the update. In response to these requests, Microsoft is providing this
set of tools.
Please note that the mechanism to temporarily disable delivery of
Windows XP SP2 will be available for a period of 120 days (4 months)
from August 16. At the end of this period, Windows XP SP2 will be
delivered to all Windows XP and Windows XP Service Pack 1 systems.

Deploying Windows Firewall Settings for
Microsoft Windows XP with Service Pack 2
(v 2)
05/07/2004 01:56 AMWindows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), currently a Release Candidate in Beta
testing, includes significant enhancements to the Windows Firewall
component, previously known as the Internet Connection Firewall (ICF).
Windows Firewall is a stateful host-based firewall that discards
unsolicited incoming traffic, providing a level of protection for
computers against malicious users or programs. To provide better
protection for computers connected to any kind of network (such as the
Internet, a home network, or an organization network), Windows XP SP2
enables Windows Firewall on all network connections by default. This
new behavior can impair some types of communications. This article
describes how to deploy the appropriate configuration settings for
Windows Firewall on an organization network so that it is enabled and
providing protection, and so that communications are not impaired.

Windows Server 2003
11/04/2003 10:55 AMMicrosoft Corp. today announced public availability of Windows®
Rights Management Services (RMS), information protection technology
for Windows Server (TM) 2003 that helps enterprises and organizations
safeguard their sensitive digital information from unauthorized use.
RMS allows information workers to distribute information within their
organizations and define how and under what circumstances it can be
used, such as when it expires and who can open, modify, print and
forward it. The ability to express and enforce document-level
protection will allow organizations to internally share information
more broadly, with less risk of inadvertent or intentional misuse.
