Free baby photo trojan gets new moms to
sell baby-privacy
04/04/2005 06:24 AMCory Doctorow:
A friend of mine worked at Procter and Gamble when they hit on the
idea of giving away baskets of baby-related freebies to new moms. The
idea was that a couple days after the family went home and they needed
more diapers, mom would send dad out with the package from the
freebies and say, "More like these, please." It's pretty clever, and
I'm cool with it -- especially now that the whole thing is handled
through brokers who take products from a variety of vendors, with
input from maternity wards.
That, I think, is a pretty good way of marketing to new families. It
doesn't compromise privacy, it gives them something they need, and it
doesn't force them or lock them in. It's informative, useful, and
respectful (provided that the marketing makes it clear that there's no
medical endorsement of these products).
Compare that to this: a service that sneakily gets moms to agree to a
"free baby photo" while they're signing all their necessary medical
forms on the morning of their delivery. The company that takes the
picture then sells your contact info to anyone who'll buy it.
On the morning of the delivery, the nurse hands a sheaf of forms to
the mother-to-be. Buried within is a release form offering a free
portrait of the new baby. Mom is wired to three different machines,
having her pulse and blood pressure measured automatically while two
others sensors detect uterine contractions and the baby’s heart rate
and another chattering electromechanical behemoth plots a seismograph
of both...
...[T]he photo enterprise is run by a third party, Growing Family.
They’ll shoot a picture of your munchkin, in exchange for his or her
name and birthdate and your full name and address...
Growing Family will use your information from time to time to
promote additional products, services, rewards and special offers from
Growing Family Network and its select Network Partners.
Another friend of mine had his baby daughter die from crib-death a few
weeks after she was born. For years afterward, he and his wife got a
steady stream of marketing materials, including ghastly "birthday
cards" from marketers who'd bought the information that they'd had a
baby, but never received the message that the baby had died. Needless
to say, when their next baby was born, they never, ever bought
products from the companies that ghoulishly continued to market to
their dead daughter.

06/07/2004 01:56 PMWell, the press certainly loves this story for the headline alone, but
the details are a bit less than exciting. Everyone seems to be
rushing out stories about how
Microsoft and SAP had some merger talks last year, but gave
them up when they felt that the deal would be fairly complex (you
think?) and would have integration difficulties. Companies examine
the idea of merging with other companies on a fairly regular basis -
and most of those conversations go nowhere (fast). This seems to be
just one of those types of situations, which is just getting attention
due to the names involved. It doesn't sound like the conversations
ever got that far along (and you can imagine that antitrust folks
would had a field day if they had).

when I start the computer or loaded a word document windows would

I do that and the problem goes away.

AT&T SBC deal is done
ALERT: WSJ just announced that two companies have reached a tentative
deal and it could be announced pretty soon. According to the report,
AT&T CEO David Dorman will become the president of the joint company,
while SBC Chairman and CEO Ed Whitacre is going to retain those two
positions. AT&T will have three board seats on the new combined
company’s board. “SBC is expected to keep using the AT&T brand
name, at least in dealing with its business customers, because the
AT&T name is recognized all over the world. SBC’s brand, by
comparison, has little recognition outside its territory of mostly
Southwestern and Western states,” The Journal adds. The $15-billion
stock plus $ 1 billion cash deal turns SBC into the largest phone
company in the US, with presence in local, long distance, wireless and
business markets. More to follow later!

Ned Batchelder alerted me this morning to Amazon's new search feature:
Now Amazon lets you search the full text of its books. This is
astounding, not only because of the further differences it highlights
between Amazon and traditional bookstores, but because of the effort
it must have taken to accomplish. The text seems to be from scans of
pages, subjected to an OCR process. And not just the bulk of popular
books, either. They've got all sorts of wild and wooly volumes
available this way. I don't know how truly useful it will be, since
full text searching can be extremely noisy, even before the OCR noise
is factored in. [
Ned Batchelder: October 2003]
I wondered about the OCR strategy too. In this day and age, surely any
publisher could provide electronic copy to an indexer. But then I
drilled down and discovered something quite remarkable. I own a copy
of Tesla:
Man Out of Time. The other day, I was mentioning to someone that,
according to that book, some of Nikola Tesla's writings are
still classified. This
query finds the passage I was
remembering. Awesome! Now the physical book I bought from Amazon is
more valuable to me. Its printed index has been augmented by a vastly
more capable online index. This extremely useful capability is, by the
way, also available to owners of books in the
Safari Books Online service,
though it correlates results only to chapter and section, not to page.
Little-known fact: you need not be a Safari subscriber to use Safari
as an augmented index to books you own.
