Qwest Launches Tiered Services, Naked
DSL
02/17/2004 01:15 PM

An anonymous Qwest employee wrote in to mention that the company is announcing plans to offer "naked DSL" - that is, DSL without requiring local phone service. This is a big deal. We've been complain ing about DSL companies requiring that you have local phone service with them to get DSL. Obviously, the advantages to them are that they get more out of you - but as an increasingly tech savvy population is ditching landlines for VoIP or cellular phones, this policy was only pushing people to go to cable instead. Qwest, who has not had the greatest reputation for service over the past few years, appears to be trying to turn this around and go after the market of folks who don't want to be tied down to a landline phone number they won't want or use. They're also announcing a new tiered offering including the incredibly cheap $15/month plan - that caps bandwidth at 256k. Not that fast, but for those who just want an always on connection, it's a steal. This is clearly going directly after the dialup user who hasn't decided to upgrade yet, but now has almost no excuse not to.

BMG Innovates! Offering Tiered CD
Pricing
07/08/2004 06:49 PM
Adam submits this story that somehow slipped by without much notice earlier this week about how BMG is going to test a tiered CD model in Germany this summer. In realizing that part of the reason people download is because they believe CDs cost too much, they're trying to break down the value of the CD into different components. Thus, you can buy a "no frills" version of the CD (which will just look like a burned copy, with the name of the musician and the title printed on the CD) for 10 euros. A mid-level CD of the same music that will include a cover and an insert with lyrics will run 13 euros, and the "luxury" version of the CD, complete with additional material and video clips on the CD will run 18 euros. Even BMG admits they have no clue whether or not the plan will work, but they can't come up with a good reason not to at least try it. The prices still seem a bit high, but it's the first sign I've seen that the industry realizes that they have more to sell than just the music itself -- and that, alone, is a very very small step in the right direction.

Taking A Tiered Approach To Fee-Based
Content Online

Taking A Tiered Approach To Fee-Based
Content Online
10/30/2003 11:46 PM
Mark Glaser's latest piece at OJR looks at the plans to charge for the online content at canada.com, with a focus on how the pay system will work on tiers. The basic level of news access will be free, but columnists and opinion pieces get shifted up to tier 2 - which requires a subscription to a CanWest newspaper. Tier 3 offers a PDF version of the newspaper, mainly targeted at out of towners who want to get the paper. Tier 4 is their "holy grail" - where they'll add in extra multimedia content. It'll be an interesting experiment, but so far, most (but certainly not all) attempts at charging for online newspaper content has failed miserably. The problem is that you're competing against tons of free content that is often considered as good, if not better. You have to really offer something different, that can't be found elsewhere, and which people place a value on. The Wall Street Journal has been able to do that. Most news organizations, though, can't get that sort of buy-in. There are also pretty big risks in taking this route. Page views drop precipitously - so if you don't get back the lost ad revenue in subscription fees, you're actually worse off. You also have to realize that there are additional costs associated with billing, customer support, and maintaining subscriptions (partly offset by lower bandwidth fees). There's also the larger question of blocking your content off from the world. What makes content increasingly valuable these days is the links between it and other content. That is, after all, what makes the web what it is. Blocking up your content behind a paid wall like that cuts you out of that process, for the most part. Depending on what they're trying to do, some sites may be able to get away with that, but the risks are pretty big. It makes it much more difficult for new people (customers) to discover you and realize you might be relevant to their lives. It also makes your overall content less valuable because there isn't any of the additional valuable discussions that often go on around good content.

Naked Women And Wireless Security

Naked Women And Wireless Security 03/25/2005 09:47 PM
Yes, I'm a bit worried about what kind of people will find this post via Google in a few days, but... It appears that mobile phone security is suddenly getting a lot more attention -- and for some reason, it's got a lot to do with naked women. First, there was the whole Paris Hilton incident, where her naked camera phone photos were spread all over the internet due to weak server security from Danger and T-Mobile, and now comes the amazingly bizarre story of two cops who arrested a woman for drunk driving and then down loaded her naked camera phone photos to a PDA. No one seems to want to explain why a drunk driving arrest would involve checking out the photos on someone's phone. Then again, this case has a number of oddities, including the fact that the cop's partner later called the woman to ask her for a date. However, as the article points out, the cops might not have done anything illegal -- and someone even claims that this is no different than if someone had lost their wallet and it had nude photos inside. Except that doesn't seem quite right. This wasn't a case where the woman lost her phone. This was a situation where the cop clearly took it and then actively went through it, apparently looking for photos. That seems to go beyond the standard investigative technique needed to judge whether or not a driver is sober. Either way, it appears that pictures of naked women are suddenly driving forward the important discussion on increasing wireless security. People always said that porn leads the way towards technology innovation, but they probably didn't mean this way.

Naked lady sushi

Naked lady sushi 11/11/2003 08:04 PM
The hottest Japorn export since bukkake? Or a dehumanizing, exploitative stunt? The provocative trend of presenting sushi on the body of an au naturel female model migrates to the US. Chaos ensues. Please, please, be careful with the wasabi.
Chopsticks at the ready, patrons line up. Hours earlier, across town on the campus of the University of Washington, eight activists, mostly Asian-American women, express outrage at what they call the prostitution of sushi and the exploitation of women. They plot their strategy. (...)While the promoter and the sushi model say this melding of prandial and sexual is performance art, Bonzai's patrons --men and women of various ethnicities --say it merely adds to the restaurant's sensual vibe. Opponents say treating women like a serving platter reinforces attitudes that make domestic and sexual violence so prevalent.

Verizon Finally Goes Naked

Verizon Finally Goes Naked 04/18/2005 06:48 PM
Despite promising it ages ago and then delay ing it repeatedly for reasons that didn't really make much sense, it looks like Verizon is finally offering "naked DSL" in the northeast. That means customers will be able to get DSL without getting the corresponding local telephone line. Gee, you think this has anything to do with Verizon finally getting around to offering a real VoIP service to go with that DSL? While there was a big ruckus over the FCC saying states can't require naked DSL, it's reasonable to expect both SBC and BellSouth to eventually jump on the naked DSL bandwagon when they have real VoIP offerings as well. For SBC, that may be when they close the deal to buy AT&T. For BellSouth... who knows. Considering they were really the first major telco to exper iment with VoIP they certainly are taking their sweet time offering it for real. Of course, you have to wonder what Verizon's CEO is going to have to say about this offering, considering he seems to think that customers who actually want decent, reasonable service are a problem.

It's not really mobile TV, and it's not really porn, but mobile news from naked people just might work.
