Open-source servers today: PHP prowls
the edge
06/26/2002 01:01 PM

"This is something we've discussed with NuSphere from the beginning," said Mark Karaman, president of Solvepoint Corp., a management and technology consulting company in West Chester, Pa. "It will take the benefits NuSphere bestowed in the PHP/MySQL space and make them available in the Java space. It's a sensible next step for somebody that has used scripting languages and wants to implement what Java has to offer, and doesn't want to go all [the] way with the J2EE/EJB framework. The servlet is an adorable little thing Tomcat does very well; you could be a PHP programmer and understand exactly what this is."

"tri" Food for thought, but I don't agree with everything stated in this article. I don't think every PHP programmer would understand what servlets are.

"tri" Also see the interesting article on Open-Source Application Servers such as Zope, Enhydra and Tomcat.

new advertising tools?.

new advertising tools?

There is news that SeaChange International's "Ad Placement System" (no link on purpose) will allow cable companies to serve more relevant TV advertising based on location and time of day (for video-on-demand content.) There is a part of me that would welcome more relevant ads in general, but the privacy issues are more prominent. How much data does my cable company share with advertisers currently? How much more will they be giving away in the future?

"We are addressing this issue in on-demand television... -- allowing advertising to become customized on a household by household basis to maximize relevance and impact. We want to enable the best possible experience for both the viewer and the advertiser."

Additionally, using "zip code plus four" precision, cable operators can theoretically craft ads that cater to regions and even neighborhoods, SeaChange said. The company offered the example of serving ads for a compact car to "downtown demos," while wealthier "uptown" neighborhoods see an ad for luxury car.

Somehow, I don't think that SeaChange has the best possible experience of the viewer ahead of the advertiser.

IBM Adopts Open Development Internally: "Following on the success of its Eclipse open-source development platform, IBM has quietly been using a form of open-source development internally to create technology the company will sell commercially.

IBM calls its model Community Source, which it defines as a collaborative, internal, open-source-style environment for developing and testing new technology.

Danny Sabbah, vice president of strategy and technology for the IBM Software Group, in Armonk, N.Y., said IBM is using its Community Source model across 100 projects and 2,000 developers in the company. These projects span the IBM Software Group, Systems Group, Research and Global Services, he said."

Very interesting. I'd like to learn more about that. What parts of the so called open source development process have they built into the Community Source model? I've found that most developers have different definitions of the open source development process (via Ross Gardler).

When Open Source doesn't open and source

One frustration too many: time for a rant. When a bug in Mozilla (keyboard focus is on the previously selected window) has remained unfixed for at least 18 to 24 months, when XFree86 mouse interaction with PS/2 or GPM remains hazardous and makes a system unusable and that bug has been fobbed off to the kernel developers and not dealt with for at least two years - when there are more examples like this that make using Open Source software a pain, what do you do?

Are you one of the few people with the time and money and expertise sufficient to delve into the source yourself to fix the problem?

Do we have it "too good" and these niggles are, by comparison to the rest of the world's computer users (Windows), absolute peanuts?

Open source and visible source

Open source and visible source 06/08/2004 09:11 AM
Zope Corp.'s layered strategy of engagement with open source and visible-source communities is a compelling blend of the strengths of free and commercial software development. In two previous columns, Open source citizenship and Giving back to open source, I explored the tendency of enterprises to fork open source projects rather than join them. Pedhazur suggests that a commercial entity supporting both an open source base and a visible-source layered product can reduce the need to fork. By outsourcing code enhancements, the argument goes, an enterprise can enjoy single-throat-to-choke control without seceding from a project's community. It remains to be seen how broadly this model can apply, but in cases where it does, what's not to like? [Full story at InfoWorld.com]
In this two-minute clip, Zope Corp.'s Chairman Hadar Pedhazur describes the visible source model as a middle-ground option between the few large open source projects, whose direction an enterprise cannot easily influence, and the many smaller ones that enterprises can influence, but typically fork in order to do so. ...

toms_slim_yepp.jpg imageTom's Hardware has an at-first off putting comparison review of the Creative MuVo Slim and Samsung's Yepp YP-T5 where they attempt to contrast the two oddly-shaped flash memory players, but mostly just end up with two separate reviews. Of the two, I definitely prefer the MuVo Slim. It may be twice as heavy and oddly shaped, but you have to admit there is a certain appeal to having 256MB of music stored in a form-factor that shares both the size and shape of a cassette tape. The fact that it uses USB 2.0 just takes it over the top.

While Sony Tries To Become Apple,
Samsung Tries To Become Sony
05/13/2004 03:41 AM
Has anyone noticed that it's becoming increasingly difficult to tell Samsung from Sony? It appears that almost everything Sony does, Samsung does as well. So, it's really no surprise that a little over a month after Sony announced plans to build out retail stores more for advertising than for sales, Samsung plans to do the same thing. Of course, while Sony says they're more interested in using the stores for advertising, Samsung has gone one step further. They believe so strongly that this "store" is just for advertising that they won't sell you anything at the store. It's for showcasing products only. Also, a random note in the article, but the same week that Sony and Nintendo announced their plans for their next generation handheld gaming devices, this article also mentions that Samsung is planning for its own N-Gage like phone/gaming device. Apparently, the dismal failure of the N-Gage isn't enough to scare them off.

samsungst-5.jpg imageGood morning, friends. I had a great time in Virginia this weekend, although as is typical at a LAN I played videogames for about 2 hours and drank for about 8 each day (not that this is necessarily in error). That being said, I'm glad to be back, so I can talk about things like this update to the Samsung YP-T5 "World's Smallest" YP-T5 flash player, the YP-ST5. Although the form factor is pretty much the same, the battery life has been bumped from 8 hours of playback to 20, USB 2.0 support is in, and an updated firmware (around August or so) will add OGG Vorbis support.

Also, reheated fried calamari has the delicate taste and texture of a cockring. Take the necessary flavor precautions.
