Classroom by David Huffakerhttp://firstmo
nday.org/issues/issue9_6/huffaker/This paper explores
the role of weblogs or "blogs" in classroom settings. Blogs, which
resemble personal journals or diaries and provide an online venue
where self–expression and creativity is encouraged and online
communities are built, provide an excellent opportunity for educators
to advance literacy through storytelling and dialogue. This paper
explores the importance of literacy and storytelling in learning, and
then juxtaposes these concepts with the features of blogs. The paper
also reviews examples of blogs in practice.

A while back, I noticed that a fresh 'best web development
language' war broke out,
this time between Java and PHP. I tuned out when it got ugly
but noted that
the war got started when a Friendster engineer posted about the
Friendster's switch
from JSP to PHP along with some throwaway comments that many Java
geeks interpreted
as insults.
I didn't know that the engineer was Joyce Park (hey,
a fellow Korean-American blogger) and that she got fired recently
for blogging until
I read the Red
Herring article (aren't they supposed to be dead?).
The problem here is that most bloggers just don't know realize that
they have a powerful
tool in their hands that could cause serious damages whether
intentional or not.
If Joyce said what she posted to engineers she met in person, all
there would be a
heated discussion. But posting the same on her blog created a
big wave of controversy
among geeks with Friendster as the center piece.
Should companies just shrug when personal activities of their
employees affect the
company? If Joyce has really been blogging for the past five
years, I think
Joyce should have known better. As to Friendster, they are
just guilty of massive
stupidity.

How to hack Blogger
How to hack Blogger
06/29/2004 05:48 AMBlogger has published an article on how to hack the service to add
greater customization by tweaking its template vocabulary:
For instance, most of our default templates display archive links in a
list. But really, the archive tags simply provide the names and URLs
of all the archive files, and we can do whatever we want with them. Do
you know how to make a pull-down menu in HTML? Think that might be a
more efficient format for your three years of daily archives? Great!
Move the archive tags out of the list and into a menu.

Help a newbie bl0gger out
Help a newbie bl0gger out
03/14/2005 04:23 PMA few days ago, I got a letter from a reader named Randy:
I am father to a 2 1/2 yr old girl with her second
cancer who is going for a bone marrow transplant in late March. I have
just started to think about fundraising when I was forwarded your
interview in Wired and it got me thinking that perhaps I could use the
same approach to raise money for Julia.
I have been keeping a blog since she was diagnosed the 2nd time
on 12/30/04. Although I am a web architect, I know next to nothing
about blogs and am spending all my time researching cancer. Thus, the
format, graphics, and look and feel have been completely neglected --
the main focus has been the content in order to -- keep a record for
family, journal for Julia for when she is older, help me philosophize
about life and put her illness into perspective, etc.
I was hoping you could give me some tips on getting started --
some questions that come to mind:
- Finding an ISP that allows you access to the servers (I am
currently hosted at Geocities and would have to upgrade just to get
PHP and MySQL).
- How to set up processing for micropayments? (We have a
fundraising idea around Julia's treatment and progress which would
require periodic debit from an account.)
- Tips for building traffic.
- Links to 1) sites that help a blogger, 2) sites to blogs you
would consider top-notch, anything else you feel is useful
I know I could find this stuff myself, but I was hoping that you
could jump me up the learning curve so that I could get Jules' site up
and running.
I emailed him some recommendations but I figured you folks would
have some good advice as well. Are there alternatives to PayPal for
donations? Tips and sites for beginning bloggers would be helpful as
well...Google was only moderately helpful and most links I found skew
towards business uses of blogs. Try and keep the duplicate information
to a minimum and when in doubt, be more verbose rather than less..."Bitpass is good for micropayments
because..." rather than "Try Bitpass". Alright, go.

04/16/2004 01:12 PMBrian Jepson reviews the Sony Ericsson EDGE card to the nth degree,
including configuration advice and photos: This in-depth, multi-page
review at Jiwire (our content partner) tells the results of Brian's
real-world testing of EDGE service over AT&T Wireless's network in
several cities, provides an explanation of how EDGE works (and why
performance might vary), and is fully illustrated with screen captures
and photos. Brian also provides the information you need to use the
card with Mac OS X and Linux, which aren't directly supported by Sony
Ericsson. A small download, a few code changes, recompile, and voila!
You've got high-speed cell data on unsupported computers. While $80 a
month may seem high for a consumer-level price, for business people
who need ubiquitous data access, EDGE is really the fastest best
option when it works. By January 2005, Verizon Wireless will have its
1xEvDO in potentially dozens of cities, while AT&T Wireless should
have debuted UMTS in four or five towns....

It's not likely
we'll see it over our way, but Japanese carrier has a new Sony
Ericsson handset, the A1402S (perhaps that name has a little more
zing in Japanese). It looks like fairly standard fare, though,
so no need to shed those big crocodile tears like we normally do when
Japan gets a new phone with an 80-megapixel videocamera that cleans
your teeth and punches your grandma all at once. PhoneMag has a few
details, such as they are. One notable thing, though, is that the
A1402S comes with a pretty big selection of swappable faceplates. Not
groundbreaking, but it makes for a nice picture, at least.

Sony Ericsson has a new phone
for Japan's au cellular service, dubbed the "A1402S II." It is, as
expected, the successor to the "A1402S." It's a somewhat underwhelming
phone, though, so it better be cheap; prices are not yet announced.
Although it does of course have the Japanese standard (no jealous;
stand proud, America) QVGA (240 x 320) resolution on a 2.3-inch
display, the camera is a mere 0.34MP (so take some heart in that
failing). A cameraless version of the phone will also be
available.
So fine, but why do they get all the pink phones? I clack my claws
down each link of my chitinous sensor braids in protest.
