This morning during the "fellows hour," we hear from Tuan Nguyen who founded Vietnam Net (English version) in 1997, an ISP and content provider. He began in 1995 by putting together computers, installing linux, etc. In 1997, the government officially permitted people to connnect to the Internet. The site now has 1.5M viewers/day. (Vietnam's population is 85M. About 5M people in Vietnam are on the Internet. About 6M have mobile phones.) The site has a newspaper license which enables its reporters to go anywhere and talk with anyone. The leaders of the party provide "guidelines" rather than ruling particular stories...

UK Newspaper Deluding Itself About
Online Impact On Paper Sales
09/20/2004 03:07 PM
It really is looking like the newspaper industry is deluding itself about the impact of the web on their business. Fitting well with the story earlier today about why newspapers require online registration, comes the news that the Sun in the UK has decided to pull some of its content off the web, after doing a study suggesting that readers who came to the site then chose not to buy the paper. Of course, all this really does, rather than drive more people to buy the paper, is drive more people to other websites. Basically, they're making the classic disruptive technology mistake: rather than embracing the new technology that's eating away they're business, they're trying to deny it exists.

Would Satellite TV Providers Ditch
Commercials?

Would Satellite TV Providers Ditch
Commercials?
01/03/2005 02:58 PM
With all this talk about the battl es convergence creates, one potentially interesting one is whether or not pay TV providers would ever experiment with ripping out commercials from programs. Already, some "premium" channels come without commercials and satellite radio has tried the "commercial-free" game also. However, plenty of existing TV stations come with lots of commercials, leading to the possibility that a pay TV provider could, in theory, offer a DVR service that would get rid of commercials. That, at least, is the speculation after it was revealed that UK satellite TV provider BSkyB has received a patent for a DVR device that skips ads automatically or that can just record portions of shows (such as just recording a favorite band's appearance on a music video station). Of course, it seems a bit questionable as to how this is patentable. Commercial skip technology has been around for a while, and is hardly "non-obvious." Also, BSkyB responds in the article in a way suggesting they just got the patent to use it to charge anyone else who dared to offer such features, while having no plans to offer the feature themselves. Still, it does raise some interesting questions about whether or not part of the battle is going to come from pay TV providers (both cable and satellite) and the broadcasters. There have already been a few very public battles about how much certain channels cost to get included in a pay TV offering -- and it's not hard to see the cable and satellite providers eventually respond by threatening to cut out commercials to get some more leverage in the negotiations.
