Data Points in Media's Transformation

Data Points in Media's Transformation 06/23/2004 12:18 PM

  • James Cramer (NY Magazine): Viacom SOS. No, to find out why Viacom’s stock sank to the 52-week-low list, all you need to do is look to the 52-week-high list, where the winners are: video games, satellite radio, video-on-demand, and Internet search engines. Those are the companies with the better models, the better technology that has, in an incredibly short period of time, stolen massive amounts of the fuel that powered Battleship Viacom: the viewers themselves.
  • Chris Nolan: It's Not Just Blogging AnymoreFor a while I, and many others have been dissatisfied with the term “web logging.” That focuses on the technology, not on what the technology produces. So, after a little thought, I’m calling what I and others do Stand-Alone Journalism. Why Stand-Alone Journalism? Well, it’s accurate. A journalist – or a small group of reporters – can work on the web to produce what they want as they find it appropriate. And readers are equally free to read the work of individual journalist as they see fit, on their time, not on schedules set by TV networks or the newspapers.
  • Viacom is trying to save its business model, as are other Big Media companies. Chris Nolan and other sole-proprietorship Web journalists are trying to create one. These aren't exactly ships passing in the night. But something important is going on. Big Media, contrary to the popular belief among bloggers, do get it. The problem for Big Media is that there's no way to return to the good old days of monopoly practices -- unless government mandates it. We're heading in that direction, unfortunately.

    Special Registration: Federal Racial
    Profiling?
    03/19/2003 10:27 PM
Muslim men have been asked to undergo "Special Registration", a Department of Homeland Security program in its early stages. Men who hail from 25 targeted countries are required to be fingerprinted, photographed, give up credit card and bank account numbers, and are then given a registration number. So far, 46 people have been arrested, but none for terrorist-related activities. Is this an acceptable security precaution or the first sign of history repeating itself?

'A large percentage [of the vendors] are of a Hispanic nature,' Langley said. 'Today hes Jose Rodriguez, tomorrow hes Raul something or other, and tomorrow after that hes something else. These people change their identity all the time. A pictures worth a thousand words.'
Langley is Western regional coordinator for the RIAA Anti-Piracy Unit.
I feel sorry for Sir Howard Stringer. I'm glad I don't have to hang out with people like the RIAA. (tech dirt on how Sir Howard might save Sony Music)

I wonder just how much racism in the name of "profiling" will be tolerated. Since the RIAA links piracy to terrorism, I suppose they'll expect us to tolerate a lot.

    Gawker jumps the snark

Gawker jumps the snark 11/03/2003 12:17 PM
Dude, like, Gawker is OVER. Not shut down, I mean, like, so OVER. As in, when New York magazine publishes a feature which includes phrases like "Gawker Explosion," "Gawker Effect," and "Gawker-fed hotness" about your site, all your je ne sais blog vanishes like a broken RSS feed in the night. (Note to God: please, please, please, don't let them ever pen so much as a word about BoingBoing, or I'll have to go back to spamming friends with lists of art-porn urls. Oh wait, I still do that! OMG! LOL!).

Still, Choire has teh funny. And Elizabeth Spiers is somehow managing to stave off the ravages of obscurity despite having turned down Jason Calacanis' infamously unrefusable offer. As for Nick Denton, the blogtrepreneur is said to be launching new sites, very soon -- the first of which is Fleshbot, a hot pink orb devoted to all things porny. Link to NY Magazine hand job story.
