Foreman And Art Director On Same Day
05/31/2004 01:55 PMLongtime game artist “Professor” Frank Vivirito was named as a jury
foreman and Art Director of Vision Videogames earlier this week. “I
was quite surprised at the honor, especially after blowing off an
earlier jury duty date and having to be brought before the judge. I
thought for sure I was going to jail that time”, says Vivirito.

05/31/2004 12:35 PMBack from the grill-out
Well, it's been and interesting day. I drove over to Marc Canter's
abode after getting an invite last week. Marc, his wife, and kids are
all charming and very cool people. I spent some time talking with
various folks who made up the panoply of guests, and managed to hide
the potato salad I'd brought :)
I'm starting a new job next
week at 1up.com. I'm very excited and hope to use this as a way to
turn around my life in some ways. I have always wanted to get into a
fiel related to gaming, while still using my web skills. It's not
often that you find your "dream job" I'm getting prepared to do some
hard work to make this site not only outstanding, but "insanely
great".
Later on I took the wife and kids to see Shrek 2 for
the 2nd time. I must say I enjoyed it more than the first time, and I
found myself looking in the backgrounds and scenery for hidden items.
If you havent seen Shrek 2, I highly recommend it. [Andrew Wooldridge Dot

OK - the truth can be told now. I promised my friend
Ami Sun that she would have the ONLY potato salad at the
BBQ.
So Imagine (to my horror) when Andrew shows up with this
HUGE bucket of potatoe salad (I guess I forgot to tell him!) Not
wishing to completely bum out Ami - sure - yes I'll admit it - I hid
Andrew's salad. Sorry Andrew!

Weber Baby Q Grill
06/19/2004 01:34 PMOne of the things I've wanted ever since I moved into the new place is
a decent gas grill--something that's not cheap and breakable but also
not so large that it doesn't make sense for a single guy and his cats.
A few weeks ago, while visiting the local Orchard Supply Hardware
(something I've been doing frequently), I browsed their selection of
grills and found the perfect solution: The Weber Baby Q Gas Grill.
This little grill is great. It...

R.I.P. George Woodbridge, 73
01/22/2004 07:27 PMGeorge Woodbridge, a longtime Mad cartoonist died this week. He was
73. I always thought he had a low opinion of human beings, because he
drew them so ugly. Not cartoony ugly, like Basil Wolverton, but
blotchy and smelly and decaying from the inside out. He was a damn
fine artist, though.
Known for his delicately crosshatched pen-and-ink style, he was
equally adept at caricature, at evoking historical styles and
skewering Madison Avenue. A typical Woodbridge target was the suburban
dweller, who progressed over the years from his early-1960's
incarnation as a commuter-train-chasing executive in a button-down
shirt to his overweight, barbecuing 1970's counterpart clad in
polyester and plaid.

George Bush Senior gets it:
06/10/2004 01:25 AMOne of George Bush senior' closest aides, long-time CIA officer Donald
Gregg, writes in today's NYT: Recent reports indicate that Bush
administration lawyers, in their struggles to deal with terrorism,
wrote memos in 2003 pushing aside longstanding prohibitions on the use
of torture by Americans. These memos cleared the way for the horrors
that have been revealed in Iraq, Afghanistan and Guantánamo and make a
mockery of administration assertions that a few misguided enlisted
personnel perpetrated the vile abuse of prisoners. I can think of
nothing that can more devastatingly undercut America's standing in the
world or, more important, our view of ourselves, than these decisions.
Sanctioned abuse is deeply corrosive — just ask the French, who are
still seeking to eradicate the stain on their honor that resulted from
the deliberate use of torture in Algeria. ... As Alistair Horne put it
in "A Savage War of Peace," use of torture may have won the battle of
Algiers for the French, but it cost them Algeria. This is as close to
a public repudiation by George Bush Sr. of his son's criminal policies
as I can imagine seeing, similar to the Brent Scowcraft anti-Iraq war
Op-ed just before the Bush launched his war on Iraq. The price that
America has paid for this Oedipal battle is stupendous....

09/05/2004 06:48 PMFrank Rich (NY Times): How
Kerry Became a Girlie-Man. The flaw in Mr. Kerry is not, as
Washington wisdom has it, that he asked for trouble from the Swifties
by bringing up Vietnam in the first place. Both his Vietnam service
and Vietnam itself are entirely relevant to a campaign set against an
unpopular and ineptly executed war in Iraq that was spawned by the
executive branch in similarly cloudy circumstances. But having brought
Vietnam up against the backdrop of our 2004 war, Mr. Kerry has nothing
to say about it except that his service proves he's more manly than
Mr. Bush. Well, nearly anyone is more manly than a president who
didn't have the guts to visit with the 9/11 commission unaccompanied
by a chaperone.

It's rare for any speaker to draw a standing ovation from the
OSCON audience,
but that's what
David Rumsey
did last week. And Rumsey isn't one of the heroes of open source
software. He's a philanthropist who collects historical maps, scans
them at high resolution, and publishes them on the Internet as open
content that anyone can access and repurpose. His motive is partly to
connect many people to content that few would be able to view in a
museum:
I thought about donating it to a university, but their libraries focus
on preservation, they'd have put my collection in a vault and there
would have been no access. Along comes the Internet, and I found we
could do even more with the digital content than with the originals.
We serve over 7000 visitors a day. A typical map library will serve
200 visitors a year.
But expanding access, while lovingly preserving the feel of the
artifacts he has collected, is only the tip of the iceberg. Although
you can view these images in the expected ways -- zooming in and out,
panning around -- Rumsey wants us to do more. He hopes we'll use the
online maps to tell one another stories about history, geography,
culture, and the environment. To that end, he's commissioned the
development of a family of clients. For starters, there's a
browser-based interface that you can use to view, pan, and read about
the maps. Then, using an installable Java client, you can add
annotations to the maps, crosslink points on different maps, and link
from points on maps out to the web.

de the Pentagon. Hilarious. News is finally
leaking out how the US warplan for Iraq lacked (until
recently) specific benchmarks. Rapid changes in course can
be characterized as flexibility if those changes are slaved to defined
objectives. If those objectives don't exist, it's chaos.
Of course, these new benchmarks are classified. This
means that they are effectively useless in this conflict. In
order to fight a decentralized insurgency, decision making must be
pushed down to the lowest levels. Every soldier in Iraq should
know what these objectives are so they can adapt their effort to
accomplish them.
The top U.S. officer in Iraq, Army
Gen. George Casey, lately has been garnering plaudits behind the
scenes from his military and civilian colleagues for adding measurable
benchmarks to his campaign plan, a classified document in which a
commander typically delineates security objectives and how subordinate
units will attain them. But some officials say the nearly two-year
delay in laying out clear and realistic security goals in a single
military plan has taken a toll on the Iraqi stability and
reconstruction effort.
