The Legend of Trent Lott and the Webl0gs

The Legend of Trent Lott and the Webl0gs 04/09/2004 04:12 PM
A new study from the Kennedy School pinpoints what happened between Big Media and the blogs in the case of Trent Lott. It does not portray weblogs as lead actor, but as reactor to a story that almost disappeared. A certain receptivity in the bloggers allowed judgment in the press to correct itself.

Lenny Bruce in Reverse

Lenny Bruce in Reverse 01/26/2004 12:35 PM
A rant about a ranter who gets a nother 15 minutes starting on CNBC tonight. He was fire d from Monday Night Football and his HBO show was finally canceled after the big-word, obscure reference shtick got tired. Much has been made of his post-9/11 ideological conversion, but there's a case to be made he's just showing true colors dating back to his SNL days. At least back then, this ranter says, he was willing to take on any authority figure, without fear or favor. But now he seems to be a lapdog of the power structure, a "Lenny Bruce in reverse." I still admit to a bit of warm feeling for the guy, maybe because it's still a little flattering to understand his references in this dumb-o-centric age. But he scares me a little, now.

Lenny Bruce is Not Afraid 03/25/2005 04:25 PM

Lenny Bruce CD retrospective

Lenny Bruce CD retrospective 09/22/2004 12:04 PM
Xeni Jardin: Newsweek's Brian Braiker writes about a newly released collection of work by comic legend Lenny Bruce.
If a comic gets onstage and tells his audience "I am not a comedian," he'd better say something important -- or really damn funny. Lenny Bruce -- the hepcat who took his act from L.A. strip clubs to Carnegie Hall, redefining stand-up in the process -- did both. Now, nearly 40 years after a fatal drug overdose, a dizzyingly complete six-CD collection of his trailblazing routines has been released.

"Lenny Bruce: Let the Buyer Beware" spans his career from his promising first performance in 1948 to the ravings of a haunted, hunted man the day before his death in 1966. The warts-and-all portrait includes hours of previously unreleased material and chronicles Bruce as he tilts against hypocrisy ("Censorship on the Steve Allen Show"), racism ("How to Relax Your Colored Friends at Parties") and religion ("Religions, Inc.").

Stop Mistaking the Internet for
Something Else

Stop Mistaking the Internet for
Something Else
03/11/2003 01:22 AM
The world of ends:
1. The Internet isn't complicated
2. The Internet isn't a thing. It's an agreement.
3. The Internet is stupid.
4. Adding value to the Internet lowers its value.
5. All the Internet's value grows on its edges.
6. Money moves to the suburbs.
7. The end of the world? Nah, the world of ends.
8. The Internet’s three virtues:
   a. No one owns it
   b. Everyone can use it
   c. Anyone can improve it
9. If the Internet is so simple,
why have so many been so boneheaded about it?
10. Some mistakes we can stop making already

It's interesting to see that Joi Ito feels self-concious about posting very well-known or popular articles in his blog. To me it seems perfectly natural. This weblog is part diary, part news, part opinion, and a place where i can archive interesting links.

Mistaking Content For Services Again

Mistaking Content For Services Again 08/23/2004 05:03 AM
The NY Times is running an article about how the return of internet advertising, combined with the highly sought after demographic info of those who play fantasy sports games online means that the entrance fees are getting pushed down, as advertising or indirect business advantages are more than making up for the difference. For example, Best Buy is now offering a fantasy sports service for free under the belief that it encourages users to watch more television, in which case they're more likely to want a newer, better television -- possibly from Best Buy. While that may seem like a fairly weak connection, if they do sell a few more TVs maybe it pays for itself. However, my real issue in mentioning this article is that it (once again) confuses content with services. The beginning of the article keeps talking about how fantasy sports leagues are one of the "success stories" for paid content. That's incorrect. No one signs up for a fantasy sports league for "content." All of that content is available for free. They're signing up for the service of organizing it and letting them manage the teams and communicate with others in the league. We've pointed to this confusio n many times before -- and it's important to make the distinction, because too many sites think these things mean they can charge for online content, when most of the success stories online are companies charging for services.

The lesson isn't that blogs weren't important. They were. But the journalistic ecosystem, which includes a myriad of sources who are sometimes buried deep in the background, is more complex than it may appear on the surface.

Trent Reznor’s GarageBand Release 04/18/2005 10:48 AM
“Trent Reznor just did one of the coolest things an artist could do,” writes C.K. Sample, III, for tuaw.com, “and he did so in a specifically Apple-centric way. He released Nine Inch Nails’ new single, The Hand That Feeds, as a 70MB stuffed DMG file containing the entire song in GarageBand format with a note from Trent himself.” [Apr 17, 2005]

BoingBoing pal Mike Outmesguine (who you may have spotted on CNN this weekend talking about why it would be A Bad Thing for the federal government to have the power to jam your cellphone in the name of counter-terrorism) says:
David Landers plays the voice of Henry the penguin on the kid show "Oswald" (Oswald the octopus is voiced by Fred Savage) playing on Nickelodeon. I sometimes watch it with my 3 year-old. One episode had Henry's cousin come in from out of town. His cousin was voiced by Michael McKean (who played Lenny.) I can't tell you how funny it was to hear Lenny and Squiggy pestering eachother in a children's show - while appearing as penguins!

NIN's Trent Reznor releases song as
GarageBand file
04/15/2005 09:01 PM
Xeni Jardin: On nin.com, Trent Reznor is offering a complete mix of a song from the forthcoming Nine Inch Nails album as a Garageband 2.0 file. The CD/vinyl is due out on May 3. Snip from the README:
"For quite some time I've been interested in the idea of allowing you the ability to tinker around with my tracks - to create remixes, experiment, embellish or destroy what's there. I tried a few years ago to do this in shockwave with very limited results. After spending some quality time sitting in hotel rooms on a press tour, it dawned on me that the technology now exists and is already in the hands of some of you. I got to work experimenting and came up with something I think you'll enjoy. What I'm giving you in this file is the actual multi-track audio session for "the hand that feeds" in GarageBand format. This is the entire thing bounced over from the actual Pro Tools session we recorded it into. I imported and converted the tracks into AppleLoop format so the size would be reasonable and the tempo flexible."

Is Your Name Not Bruce? 04/29/2004 01:56 AM
Okay, the experiment is officially over; you can go back to being yourselves here (as of right now). Which one was I? The one who was myself - not the Alpha, not the Omega, not even the Tau Kappa Epsilon. I guess, most of all, I wanted to break the trend of personal belief bashing around these parts. You can claim to be me, but you're still not - just as I am not you. We're all each other, individuals... except for that one guy....

Bruce Sterling interviews 01/07/2004 06:12 PM
Two exciting and thought-provoking Bruce Sterling interviews are online today: an hour-long MP3 of an interview with Massi ve Change on the University of Toronto's CIUT radio and a long interview on the future of everything with Mike "Godwin's Law" Godwin in the libertarian mag, "Reason."
reason: Blogging seems to have taken a place in the culture that used to be occupied by fanzines, and maybe by the science fiction magazines.

Sterling: It had its apotheosis in people like Cory Doctorow [author of Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom] and other writers who really aren’t that interested in the old paper world. Cory actually publishes stuff electronically, and blogging is his Weird Tales. He is of a generation sufficiently divorced from the old pulps that he’s the dolphin among mesosaurs here.
