SIM Offers Good Solution in Europe

SIM Offers Good Solution in Europe

SIM Offers Good Solution in Europe 02/17/2004 01:00 PM

European operators are using different mechanisms to build robust, secure Wi-Fi networks than their U.S. counterparts: Because all cell phones in Europe use SIM cards, operators there are also starting to employ SIM cards to secure, authenticate, and bill customers on Wi-Fi networks. Vimpelcom in Russia is testing a SIM card offering from Gemplus that would use its existing roaming, billing, and authentication infrastructure for its Wi-Fi network. Mobilkom Austria yesterday said it was converging the backend of its cellular and Wi-Fi networks and will also use SIM cards as one of many ways that customers can access the Wi-Fi networks and get billed for use. At the CTIA Wireless I.T. conference a few months ago I met with a handful of vendors pushing SIM card authentication solutions for Wi-Fi networks. While it's a good idea, I think they'll have a much harder time pushing the idea here because people aren't used to using SIM cards. I also spoke with a couple companies offering platforms that would let mobile operators leverage existing billing, authentication, and customer care systems for the Wi-Fi networks, but I haven't heard of any operators deploying anything like it yet. Converged systems make sense for cellular operators who are in the Wi-Fi game so they don't have to reinvent the wheel....

Users, which could be a cafe or retail location, are given cards with log on numbers that they can sell or give to end users. Netopia will also sell customers Web site design and maintenance service. Sure and Sip and AirPath are just two of a handful of other companies that offer hotspot services to venues. These services are aimed at venues that don't want to deal with supporting a network themselves. It's unclear yet if the pricing structures set up by these providers will fly in the market....

solution
06/03/2004 08:47 AM
Apple's newest AirPort Extreme Base Station can operate usi ng Power over Ethernet (PoE), making it possible for IT personnel in corporations, schools and other institutional settings to install the device in locations that lack easy access to an AC outlet, such as crawlspaces or areas above suspended ceilings. That presumes they're using an Ethernet switch or hub that can deliver PoE, however, which many businesses don't have. Now MacWireless offers its own PoE solution comprising a pair of adapters that convert a standard Ethernet cable into one that carries power as well. The US$69.98 interface works over up to 330 feet of Ethernet cable.

Cringely Argues Against Offshoring,
Offers No Solution

Cringely Argues Against Offshoring,
Offers No Solution
01/22/2004 06:21 PM
Robert Cringely's latest column spends a bunch of time criticiz ing offshoring - but seems to be terribly short sighted (though, he claims those supporting offshoring are the ones who are short sighted). There are plenty of reasons to be against offshoring. As I've said many times before, there's a lot of evidence that offshoring is a lot more expensive than companies seem to believe it is - and many are now regretting their decision to offshore. That said, there are other cases where it makes sense. That's not what Cringely says, though. He seems to buy into the argument that there simply aren't any jobs after we offshore programmers. There's an awful lot of evidence that that's not the case. There are many programming jobs that do require programmers to be near customers or to have a good understanding of the culture - and those are likely to increase. I'm also a bit confused in his logic. He admits that Silicon Valley (and, he should admit, the whole country) has reinvented itself time and time again - each time we outsource jobs to cheaper locations. However, he says that this time we won't be able to because "the labor is leaving". Does he mean the people? I don't think so, because earlier in the article he says all those programmers are "working down at Home Depot" because they can't find a job. So, it's just the jobs that are leaving. Of course, that's the definition of outsourcing - and it's the same thing that's always happened historically. This is no different. In fact, we're now in a situation where we have a lot of these programmers who are looking for work - so there's a huge resource there to help people reinvent our economy. Cringely claims he's not advocating protectionism, but if you read the article, he doesn't offer any other solution. How about this? The solution, which he ignores, seems obvious: we have an untapped resource in all of these smart un- or underemployed tech workers. That's an opportunity to get them involved in reinventing our economy and creating the next great thing.
