I'm sitting in a conference room in the Yahoo! Taiwan office in Taipei. It took a bit of futzing, but we managed to get on the network. The flight from Korea was just over 2 hours and a bit bumpy. Presentations start soon. I'm giving mine tomorrow, after Rasmus. It's gonna be a busy 1.5 days, but hopefully we'll get a chance to sneak out at night and go RAM shopping. :-) Anyone need some cheap memory?...

It appears that making sure gambling is fair is much more important than making sure our elections are fair. One of the defenses pulled out by those who want to keep going with existing electronic voting machines is that no one seems to complain about electronic gambling machines. Perhaps that's because electronic gambling machines are held to a much higher standard than electronic voting machines. This NY Times editorial lists six different ways in which gambling machines in Nevada are under much more scrutiny than electronic voting machines. These include things like the fact that the state requires copies of the source code of all electronic gambling software, as well as their stringent licensing procedure for any company that wishes to sell electronic gambling machines. Employees of any such company have to go through background checks to make sure they have no criminal record. Considering that Diebold had convict ed felons involved with their electronic voting systems - you wonder if a similar licensing procedure might make sense for voting machines as well.

First, I should say: I'm sorry about shining those laser pointers at the jets. I just thought they'd crash or something—I didn't realize people would get all freaked out. I promise never to do it again, but as my influence over military spending is patchy at best (my line iteming of R&D for a carbon-fiber "Super Bong" actually made it pretty far up the chain, but was nixed for being potentially "too 'Peace on Earthy'"), I can't promise that the military won't develop laser blasting pulses designed to blind and disorient both mechanical and meat-based targets. Owen White bought a Coherent G100 100 Watt CO2 laser on eBay and decided to create his own CNC table. He chronicled his construction project in his blog. He is now using his DIY CNC table to cut all sorts of things. Owen writes, "Your readers might be interested in the documentation on the computer controlled circuitry to run the CNC table and laser. For circuit prototyping I used some conventional off-the-shelf electronics packages to design the circuits, then mapped the net diagrams from the circuit software to locations on a wire-wrap board using some perl code. This simplified the process of staring at a circuit and deciding where wire-wrap connections should be made. Prototype PCBs were also made. I used AVR microcontrollers for a couple functions."
