BT Mixes Home With Mobile

btfusion.jpgLand-line phones are a thing of the past. With the advantages of cell phones people are ditching cheap land-lines for a little more expensive convenience. A happy medium may have been found. A British company BT is launching a service called BT Fusion. A cell phone connects wirelessly to a hub in the home, when ready to leave just take the phone with you for standard cell phone usage. It is predicted to be 95% cheaper while being used at home. Right now it is being tested among 400 U.K. participants with a full release due out in September.

Solution Guide for Sybase/UNIX to SQL
Server 2000: Database Engine Migration
and Application Interoperation
05/18/2004 01:31 PM
This guide presents information on the most common issues encountered and possible solutions for migrating Sybase databases to SQL Server. The guide focuses on procedures for transferring the items in a Sybase database and on redirecting and redeploying DB-Library and CT-Library applications to use a migrated database. Depending on the specific technologies used to host these client applications, at least three options are available for reconfiguring them: 1) Client applications can remain in their existing environment and be redirected to SQL Server. 2) Client applications previously executing under UNIX can be redeployed to the computer running Microsoft Windows®, hosted in the Microsoft Windows Services for UNIX (SFU) environment, and then redirected to SQL Server. 3) Client applications can be fully ported to the Microsoft Windows platform and rewritten to take advantage of Microsoft technologies and APIs.

Microsoft delays major developer tools

Microsoft delays major developer tools
and database releases
03/22/2005 03:33 PM
Microsoft has announced that its next-generation software development suite, Visual Studio 2005, and its long-awaited new database system, SQL Server 2005, will now appear in 'the second half' of 2005. This is seen as a further slippage for the long-awaited products. (The Yukon version of SQL Server was once anticipated as underpinning the database-oriented filesystem of Longhorn. Similarly, the 'Orcas' version of Visual Studio was originally intended to provide tool support for the Longhorn Windows OS.) Major products do not usual ship in July or August - so if they have not arrived by June then September becomes the first available timepoint. Given the size and history of these products, however, 'anytime before the end of 2005' might be a wiser prediction. Microsoft has announced revised US pricing for Visual Studio 2005, and tweaked subscription terms for its Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN) subscriptions, the channel by which most developers obtain Visual Studio. With the estimated prices being revised downwards, Microsoft will also offer MSDN subs with Visual Studio Professional Edition products at special rates. This is 'to afford small businesses the same subscription benefits as large enterprises,' it states.

Rapid application development environments let you produce code templates by visually designing a graphical user interface. You then simply add code for what should happen when an event (e.g. a click) occurs. Borland's Kylix is a well-known RAD application, but rumour has it Kylix's days are numbered. Time to look for alternatives.
