ATI's X800 All-In-Wonder Launch
09/07/2004 10:52 AMThanks to jerry for posting in the BPN.
In an announcement that’s unlikely to surprise anyone, ATI
has launched a new member of its All-in-Wonder multimedia graphics
cards based on the Radeon X800 XT GPU. The new card will be the first
to use ATI’s new purple and gold livery, intended to
distinguish its multimedia products.
This is also the first card to incorporate ATI’s own TV
tuner chipset, which still uses Philips-sourced components but is now
integrated directly onto the PCB. It’s a lot smaller than
the outsourced units on previous AIWs, making for a much more
streamlined card. ATI has also included FM radio as well as a TV
tuner. Radio programming can be paused and time shifted using the
FM-ON-DEMAND feature in a similar fashion to TV.
The new AIW will include an updated ‘Identity’
connector which can be used to attach the new stackable I/O modules.
Instead of having to connect everything at once, or have two break-out
boxes (one input, one output), ATI now gives you the best of both
worlds. You can have only input, only output, or both clipped
together. SCART output is also now an option for Europe, plus
component output for use with TVs that support the connection.
The new Remote Wonder II RF remote control will be included in the
bundle, although this depends on the specific OEM package. The RW II
has an increased range of 60 feet and better mouse control functions.
The package ships with Multimedia Center 9.02, which can also be
downloaded for existing Radeon AIW cards. With the launch of the PCI
TV Wonder in Europe, MC 9.02 will now support MULTVIEW in the UK,
enabling owners of a TV wonder and AIW in one system to record and
play back video simultaneously, or watch two programs at once. TVTV is
used in Europe to provide EPG (electronic programming guide), but
it’s Web-based and not built in like Windows XP Media Center
Edition’s EPG.
In its initial form, the Radeon X800 AIW will be an AGP adapter. It
will be available from the usual ATI AIW partners –
Sapphire, GeCube, Connect3D, Club3D, Hightech, and TUL (formerly
PowerColor). Pricing had not been set at the time of launch.

Rumor has it that ATI will
be announcing their answer to Nvidia's MXM laptop videocard
specification with a standard of their own called 'Axiom,'
which they may officially announce as soon as next week. While modular
videocard options for laptops is a Good Thing, it's almost certain
that the MXM and Axiom will not be interoperable, meaning you'll still
be stuck with one vendor in your upgrade path.
That picture is totally not real, but it amused me to think of tiny

Mobile-Review has a
breakdown of the new Motorola V3 "Razor" phone, an almost all-metal
clamshell that surprisingly doesn't forego a lot of features to
reach its tiny size. Similar in function to the v600, the
titanium-clad V3 is still fairly wide, but manages to remain less than
14mm thin in profile even with lots of built-in features (like
Bluetooth).
To launch this September between $650 and $750, this spiritual
successor to the StarTac is yet another hot phone from Motorola
that manages to waltz into a crowded phone market and instantly make
its own segment. It may be small, but I expect sales of the V3 to be
big (I can't believe I just wrote that).

SorobanGeeks' Portable Media World has a killer review of the
MPM-20X from NHJapan, a (duh) portable media player with a built-in
30GB hard drive. One of the best things about the MPM-20X is the fact
that it can record via direct from a video source, instead of being
reliant on a computer to get its video files (although you can do
that, too, of course). The complete package looks very nice, with a
full-featured dock and a lot of smart design choices (like a kick
stand!), as well as the freedom that comes from not being tied into
Microsoft's Portable Media Center system.
So why does PMW recommend to pass on the MPM-20X? The heart of the
device, the LCD screen, is pants. Ugly, grainy, washed-out pants.

You can get something with a lot more capability, but probably not for

The Life Of A Professional Video Gamer
The Life Of A Professional Video Gamer
02/10/2004 01:27 PMWe've been following the trend of video games to be treated more and
more like sporting events, and now News.com is
runni
ng an interview with a professional video gamer, who is making
pretty good money at it. The money comes both from winning
tournaments and from sponsorships. However, he's now trying to take
it a step further, and is going to start selling his own computers
that are designed to the specs he likes. The interview reads like a
typical confident (ok, cocky) athlete, talking about how great he is.
He compares himself to Michael Jordan a few times and talks about how
great he is at video games - but then talks about how much more
sportsmanlike he is than other players. One interesting thing, is
that he points out that part of his training involves real exercise:
running and aerobics to try to keep his reflexes sharp. It's still
interesting to watch video gaming morph into a spectator sport. As it
does, the prizes are getting bigger, and it's getting a lot more
attention. Of course, I wonder how many parents are happy about their
kids growing up to be professional Quake players instead of
professional baseball players.
