Apache Toolbox for Linux

Apache Toolbox for Linux 06/11/2004 11:17 AM
Bryan Andrew's Apache Toolbox is a Swiss army knife of a script, providing a customisable, menu-driven interface to ...

  • Apache - our favourite web server
  • SSL - Secure Sockets Layer for secure web server interactions
  • PHP, mod_perl, and mod_fastcgi - for speedy scripting language support
  • MySQL - the ubiquitous lightning fast database server
  • OpenLDAP, mod_auth_ldap, mod_auth_radius, mod_auth_pop3, mod_auth_sys and mod_accessref - various means of authentication and authorisation
  • WebDAV and mod_layout - for simple, yet powerful Web design functionality
  • mod_dynvhost, mod_throttle, mod_gzip, and mod_bandwidth - for efficient hosting and server control
  • And more! Apache Toolbox is customisable and has support (it's just a shell script after all) for anything else you'd care to plug in.

Apache Toolbox comes in two different flavours: a) just the script, which will download the various component sources as needed, or b) the full package, including the script and all required sources. The toolbox even catches RPM conflicts should they arise. -- Rael Dornfest, O'Reilly Network

Meme propagation tracking

Meme propagation tracking 08/01/2004 11:18 PM

My previous entry is an entry into Nova Spivack’s meme tracking experiment. Although you enter by copying his entry to your blog and changing the text, it’s not the same thing as Friday Five or other such silliness. The idea is to study how an idea spreads around the Web from a single blog posting.

To help track the spread, there’s a GUID that can be used to search Google. Theoretically, any page containing that GUID will be an entry into the project, but it is likely that someone will poison the results by putting the GUID elsewhere. It’s also likely that someone will link to the project without participating. This helps spread the meme but would not include the GUID.

On the individual archive page for this entry, powered by the Technorati API and MTTechnorati, there’s a list of the last 25 links to the main project page. The Technorati list would include links from all blogs tracked by Technorati, whether they include the GUID or not.

Testing Meme Propagation In Blogspace:
Add Your Blog!
08/01/2004 09:27 PM

This posting is a community experiment started by Minding the Planet to see how a meme represented by a blog posting spreads across blogspace, physical space and time. It will help to show how ideas travel across blogs in space and time and how blogs are connected. It may also help to show which blogs are most influential in the propagation of memes. The original posting for this experiment is located at: Minding the Planet; results and commentary will appear there in the future.

Please join the test by adding your blog (see instructions, below) and inviting your friends to participate — the more the better. The data from this test will be public and open; others may use it to visualize and study the connectedness of blogspace and the propagation of memes across blogs.

Olympics Shut Down Online Radio Stream
Of Radio Stations
08/16/2004 02:27 PM
It appears the folks running the Olympics are so focused on controlling (i.e., "selling") the rights to broadcast accounts of the Olympic games that they're forcing some radio stations to shut down their internet streams. The radio stations in question have regular radio broadcast rights for the Olympics, but since they didn't pay up to internet broadcast rights, they need to turn off their internet streams for the duration of the games. Considering the fact that it appears that no one is actually attending these games in person, apparently, the Olympics has decided that they're going to squeeze broadcasters for every last penny. Ah, the spirit of the games.
