Model Kits Coming Soon

Model Kits Coming Soon 04/09/2005 07:43 AM
Stawrars.com updated with a cool new article for all you model kit fans out there. AMT-Ertl has the U.S. market with 15 newly packaged classic kits plus 4 new Episode III kits. In Europe, Revell will be selling 5 new Episode III kits. The only crappy thing about it all is that the ARC-170 and AT-RT are European exclsuives and the Droid Tank is a U.S. exclsuive. I guess that's why they call it collecting!

David Pescovitz: LSD-model-M
Howard Lovy's NanoBot points us to a site selling plastic model nanotube kits. They sell other fun molecular model kits too, including cocaine, caffeine, THC, and, of course, lysergic acid diethylamide.
"LSD is a strong hallucinogen. A rough form, ergotamine, which can occur in stored rye grain, is believed to have been the cause of the odd behaviour which triggered the Salam witch trials. This model of LSD can be used in conjuction with molecular model kits of other street drugs as part of drug awareness programs."

Frequently spat-on bus drivers get DNA
kits to collect evidence
04/21/2004 12:47 PM
About once a week, a bus driver in Edinburgh gets gobbed on. To nab the sickening spitters, the drivers have been given "saliva recovery kits" -- aka "spit kits."
The kits include sterile swabs to pick up any trace of an offender’s DNA. The packs also contain a pair of latex gloves and an evidence collection bag.

Remixing "Construction Kits" are the
future of the music industry?

Remixing "Construction Kits" are the
future of the music industry?
04/23/2004 04:26 PM
Inspired by the Jay-Z Construction Set (a CDROM and .torrent full of Jay-Z vocal tracks, samples and art, intended for remixture), Ernest Miller has written a shrewd editorial about a potential path for musicians to engage their fans with their work through the release of similar kits -- he likens this to videogames that encourage players to invest in making or seeking out custom mods.
Many videogames permit players to create new content for the game engine, such as levels, maps and mods. This new content is freely distributable (at least for noncommercial purposes) and frequently incorporates content created by the original game designer along with new user-created content. This has been incredibly successful for videogame companies. The more content there is, the more popular the game becomes. The ability to create and add content creates feverish and committed communities of fans for a game. Imagine if musicians had such communities working for them.

Saturn hard drive kits take modular
approach

Saturn hard drive kits take modular
approach
02/05/2005 09:19 PM
Addonics Technologies on Thursday introduced its new line of Saturn Hard Drive Enclosure kits, which enable users to connect SATA hard drives to a computer via a USB, FireWire, CardBus/PCMCIA, SATA or IDE interface. The kits' components can be mixed or matched to meet specific needs, with 3.5-inch, 2.5-inch and 1.8-inch drives fitting inside the same enclosure. Users can employ the kit to create an external hard drive, a hot-swappable internal drive that operates as a cartridge or as a standard internal drive. Each kit comes with the necessary components for the required storage solution, and other components can be added later as needed. Prices start at US$74.50 and Addonics says that the kits "can be installed in systems with practically any operating system, depending on the type of interface connection."

Harris Educational's 'Build Your Own
Lightbulb, Telegraph' Kits

Harris Educational's 'Build Your Own
Lightbulb, Telegraph' Kits
06/14/2004 04:32 PM

rs_light.jpg image

So maybe their website looks like it was designed by the Cyber Dsign Clan, but perhaps Harris Educational's website is meant to evoke a more simple time in web design to reflect the retro-gadget science kits they sell, including the 'Build Your Own Telegraph' kit ("Take Text Messaging to a Whole New Level!") or the 'Build Your Own Lightbulb' kit that allows students to create a real, functioning light bulb with a partial vacuum that burns for up to five minutes. They kits even look the part, with sturdy wooden bases -- none of that cheap plastic crap for my son's telegraph -- and metal switches. Although each kit is sold through a number of different retailers, it looks like each one rings up between $40 and $65 or so.

Hands on is the best science learning there is. Watching my 7th Grade science teacher shatter a banana with liquid nitrogen will always be indelibly frozen into my memory -- he never did explain why we had to be naked for it to work, though.
