What Good Does Pointing Out Spyware Do?

What Good Does Pointing Out Spyware Do? 01/06/2004 01:11 PM
What a strange world we live in these days, where companies are afraid to actually deal with spyware/adware companies because they somehow have the air of "legitimacy". It's your computer, and you should be free to ditch any crap that has been installed without your knowledge and explicit consent. However, as we've pointed out in the past, companies like Dell have decided that, in order not to piss off these so-called marketers (which is not the right term for them), they won't help you get spyware off of your computer, even if that's what's causing it to slow down. Now, Broadband Reports is pointing out that, for similar reasons, big ISPs like Earthlink and AOL are offering anti-spyware products that don't actually remove the spyware. They just tell you that you have spyware on your computer, and leave it up to you to figure out how to remove it. It's certainly better than ignoring the problem completely, but it really doesn't go that far. Of course, they're probably trying to avoid lawsuit s from companies that are called spyware, but which insist they are "legitimate" - despite the fact that there's plenty of evidence most people don't install it on purpose.

My fellow Americans, in our name our government is torturing people scooped up indiscriminately — some were turned in for a bounty, not much of a guarantee of guilt. You and I are chaining them into a fetal position for 24 hours or more without food or water, letting them shit themselves. You and I are threatening people with vicious dogs. You and I are letting them roast in unventilated cells. And then there's this: "I saw another detainee sitting on the floor of the interview room with an Israeli flag draped around him, loud music being played, and a...

Is That Your Finger in Your Ear, or... 12/11/2003 04:57 PM
I've long remembered something about a wrist-phone with mic hidden in the wristband and thumb as earphone, allowing you to talk on the phone simply by making the international sign for "I'll call you." Unfortunately I never blogged it and soon lost track of the link.

Thankfully, it appears to have returned, albeit a finger, not a thumb, in your ear. Yahoo! News reports that NTT DoCoMo's Masaaki Fukumoto is developing the idea. Similar to the "bone phone" idea back in the 70s or 80s, sound travels as vibrations through the bones to the finger, into the ear, where the eardrum converts them back into sound. And as if that weren't juicy enough, "by touching forefinger to thumb, the user starts or ends a call, and uses voice recognition technology to dial the number."

You _know_ I want one...

And your mind on more important matters :).This get s alot easier to do when you have good software to help you out. After all, the computer is supposed to HELP you, right? One of the places that will get you lost faster than most is in the area of browser Favorites. In my case, I sometimes have a teensy bit of trouble handling the 4500 or so bookmarks I have, not to mention adding more.As you add more and more, it becomes harder and harder to keep them straight and to find ones you want. And that, my friends, is where Check&Get comes in.Check&Get 2.0 is a completely new version of this bookmark manager. The program handles bookmarks the way that Explorer handles files, complete with a tree-view of folders, and the bookmarks are just as easy to manipulate. It comes with a built-in browser window that will actually show you each bookmark you select, search facilities, an Import/Export/Synchronize tool, and a tool that lets you send the program to check web pages for changes on a schedule. There are even more features. Check them out and Get your own copy at http://activeurls.com/en/index.htm. It works with Internet Explorer, Netscape, Opera, and Mozilla.

Is That Your Finger In Your Ear Or Are
You Just Talking To Someone?
11/05/2003 09:23 PM
Remember in the days when mobile phone microphone/ear-pieces were relatively new? You would see someone walking down the street and think they were crazy - until you realized they were talking on their phone. Now, we may have a repeat of that phenomenon - but with people sticking their fingers in their ears. I know I've seen this one before, so I'm not sure why it's popping up again now, but a Japanese company is coming out with a watch phone that requires you to stick your finger in your ear to hear what's going on. Apparently, NTT DoCoMo is pushing forward with the idea, which might make more sense in a Japanese society where people are more used to bowing than shaking hands...

Two-Finger Scrolling on an iBook

Two-Finger Scrolling on an iBook 03/14/2005 05:09 PM

Just installed a new kernel extension to get that two-finger scrolling on an iBook G4. Works like a charm. The one that handles both methods is a little screwy because it switches to X/Y mode as you're making circles and the scroll kind of jitters, so get both of them and test each one to see which you like better. I've found the X/Y one to be the best, which is also, coincidentally, the mode Apple chose for the new PBs. Smiling

How often do your words come back to haunt you?  Just a few months ago, in the Identity Management newsletter (see link below) I said that in the mid-to-late 1990s we thought that all keyboards would have fingerprint readers built-in. I also suggested that you check out such keyboards the next time you were in a computer store. How wrong I was, at least as far as Microsoft is concerned.

Shield Finger Guard

Shield Finger Guard 06/22/2005 01:57 AM

fingerguard.jpgAmerican Guardian Inc. is selling the 'Shield Finger Guard,' a strip of plastic with adhesive that makes it impossible for children to pinch or sever their delicious fingers in the hinge side of swinging doors. Two models are available, with either a temporary, removable adhesive for homes (your kid will eventually get old enough to know better or, optimally, be left with a nubby stump too large to fit into the gap) or a permanent adhesive for schools and nurseries.

The Shield Finger Guard is $10 bucks, available at select retailers.

Giving the finger to an animal

Giving the finger to an animal 05/19/2004 11:58 AM
A man got too close to a jaguar at the Rio Grande Zoo and lost a finger. Before zoo employees realized what had happened, the guy fled the scene. Apparently, it's illegal to pet the predator. After the finger was found outside the jaguar's cage, police took a print from the detached digit and tracked the guy down through his zoo pass. Sadly, the frequent visitor who came to the zoo almost daily is now banned. I bet the jaguar will miss him. "They're not your friends, they're not your pets," the zoo director said. "They're wild animals." Link
