Knowledge management has come to the forefront of
the business world surrounded by an air of publicity and a degree of
scepticism. However in recent years, this label has been removed, and
managers and employees are now discovering the real value of knowledge
and knowledge management to their organisations. Globalisation and the
spread of multinational organisations are demanding the use of cross
cultural management and working practices across several language
groups. This leads to the question of whether knowledge management
should be practiced in the same way across nations.
This
project aims to investigate, by the use of a conversational study and
questionnaire, whether differences exist in the opinions of knowledge
management across two specific language groups: French and English.
The hypothesis that language affects thought is discussed with a view
to linking the language spoken to differences in opinions held by an
individual. The first outcome of the study was that the hypothesis
'language affects thought' was substantiated. Secondly, the hypothesis
that differences exist in the opinions of French and English speakers
in the field of knowledge management was unable to be confirmed as
correct. A copy of the full report can be found here.

Supernova Summary Day 1: Distributed Concepts Expand Beyond Technology
Supernova Summary Day 1: Distributed Concepts Expand Beyond Technology06/25/2004 03:42 AM So, we promis
ed a short summary of Supernova, and since there are plenty of
bloggers and sites covering the conference, we tried to pick through
everything and come up with a slightly different take on things.
Certainly, there was a lot of things being talked about that
get discussed over and over (and over and over) again at every one of
these conferences and which shows up on the same old blogs with the
same old arguments. It would have been nice to cut out some of that
fat, but mixed in with all of this was an idea that not everyone seems
to be picking up on: the power of all of this "decentralization" isn't
just focused on the technology world, but expands well beyond that.
While many of the conversations were focused on technology, it's time
we started looking beyond the nuts and bolts of decentralization and
towards how it will actually impact real lives. Thomas Malone got
that process started with his keynote talking about how decentralization
makes massive changes to the way humans organize, and how truly
powerful that concept really is. Unfortunately, instead of diving
more into those concepts, many of the discussions went back to the
nuts and bolts (and arguing over what shape the nuts and bolts should
be -- of if we really need nuts and bolts at all). Still, a few
conversations went beyond this issue and focused on more important
aspects of decentralization. The final panel of the day, on "fighting
distributed wars," (which was described by more than a few people as
"depressing") showed how terrorists now understand network theory, and
it's about time those who are fighting terrorists realize that they,
too, can learn from ways that technologists learn how to build
resilient, redundant networks in the fight against terrorism. That,
in many ways, is a powerful lesson of decentralization that looks at
how we can apply technology concepts to the broader world that really
impacts peoples' lives on a daily basis.

I attended the 'Reverse engineering' tutorial by Andrew Huang - the
guy who cracked the X-Box. He had also cracked his arm, but that
didn't seem to slow him down. I have to say that I got a bit bored of
all the x86 assembly code flowing with a font that was just barely
readable, so I spent some time tweaking the all new Finnish blog
awards page, coming soon to a server near you.
For the second tutorial of the day, AT&T kindly gave us Sony
Ericsson T616 phones, so that we could try some hands-on hacking. I
promptly found that the screen on these babies is abysmally bad at
direct, 25 degrees Californian sunlight... *grin* But Russell
Beattie's cool to listen to - he's certainly the archetype for us
NADD
people. At the moment he's hacking at his home server using SSH
on a big screen... Then he showed us accidentally his password to a
web service :-)
However, I don't believe that these tutorials are really of too much
value - for me anyway. Most of the stuff I am already familiar with,
or could learn quickly otherwise; or it is too detailed to get me
excited. *shrug* Should've gone to the Digital
Democracy thing.
i wrote a couple how to's, the
first is how to make "auto-movies" with all the footage we all
have on dv tape, but never do anything with it. the second
how to is how to record movies (dvds) to portable video players.
the deal is, all these portable video players are coming out and if
you own movies, you can't get them on the device you just bought,
well- you can, it's just not clear how or if it's legal. the how to
explains all this and more.

Tutorials - Using CVS With XCode07/16/2004 01:38 PM Have you ever been working on a project in Xcode, taken a direction in
the code, and wished you hadn't? You sat there and just wished you
could go back to the way your code was three days ago before you
decided that bad idea was a really good one. Maybe you work in a team
and were frustrated when your coworker was working on the same file
you were and saved over the three hours worth of changes you had just
made. Both of these issues would be nonexistent if you used some sort
of version control in your coding projects. Version control is taken
care of by some sort of source code management system. These
applications keep track of version history, releases, code
differences, and many other features.
There are 38 different Anthropology
Tutorials under the two categories of Physical Anthropology and
Cultural Anthropology. Each tutorial opens onto a broad examination of
the topic: several sections to learn about the material, related
internet sites, visual aids and "web expeditions," questions the
learner can use to enhance his/her understanding of the material. Some
tutorials are also augmented with current findings, such as excerpts
from up-to-date news articles on the topics. Tutorials include: Early
Human Evolution, The Primates, Basic Principles of Genetics, and
Language and Culture.
These tutorials are
interactive health education resources from the Patient Education
