Windows XP users try their best to
simulate Mac OS X
05/02/2004 10:32 PM
Windows XP users have serious cases of Mac OS X lust. Trying to simulate Mac OS X on Windows XP is turning into quite the hobby lately. While Microsoft is taking its own sweet time (years) to come up with a version of Windows (Longhorn) that tries to look and work like Apple's Mac OS X, Windows XP users are taking matters into their own hands while they wait and wait, then wait some more. "Look closely, and you'll see that its creator has done a very good job; although the machine is running Windows XP, the interface is almost indistinguishable from an OS X machine," Leander Kahney writes for Wired News. In the screenshots included in the Wired article, "notice the dock, desktop background, menus, system font and icons for applications and folders. Even the keyboard shortcuts belong to the Mac OS X." Kahney writes, "The system belongs to Kurt871, who won the latest monthly screenshot contest at AquaXP, a site devoted to turning XP boxes into faux Macs. AquaXP has 9,000 members. The site is named after Apple Computer's distinctive Aqua Mac OS X interface. A similar site, Aqua-Soft.org, has 16,000 members. And there are a dozen or more sites like them, according to the links collected at Iceman's Emulation Page."

The Virtual Mobile Virtual Network
Operator From 7-Eleven

The Virtual Mobile Virtual Network
Operator From 7-Eleven
04/27/2004 05:27 PM
Mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) are nothing new. Virgin, both in the UK and the US, has been quite successful creating their own mobile phone carrier, despite not having a network of their own, but simply handling the branding and management, while leaving all the technology issues to a network operator partner. So far, most MVNOs seem to be targeting the youth market (often with "pre-paid plans"), and considering just how lucrative that market seems these days, it's no surprise that plenty of others want into the market. However, operating the whole MVNO is probably a lot of work, so now we're getting to the point where you have virtual MVNOs (VMVNOs) who will do all the work for a company, and simply slap their brand on the final product. That seems to be what's happening with convenience store 7-Eleven, who has announced plans to sell pre-paid mobile phones and service under the "Speak Out" brand - though, all the work appears to be done by Ztar Mobile. Other retailers are quickly expected to follow. Wal-Mart is at the top of the list, with Costco and Home Depot also apparently considering their own mobile phone offerings. The idea is to target younger users, or those with bad credit histories, who can simply pick up a phone at the store, and use it until their minutes run out, at which point they can top it up again - back at the store, of course.

02/11/2004 04:31 PM
Here're my running notes from danah boyd's Re venge of the User: Lessons from Creator/User Battles at the O'Reilly Emerging Technology Conference in San Diego.
The response is an attempt to "configure the users" -- constrain behavior to acceptable behavior with messaaging, kicking people off, etc.

This won't work: you can't tell a hacker not to hack. These kids are social hackers. You can stop some bad behavior, but you chase off your best users, too.

Dating doesn't happen because you're in a dating context. Dating arises out of real contexts.

Taking away fakesters didn't make Frienster more real. Friendster is unreal because people never remove their friends, even if they never see them (the exception is when you break up, ironic, because ex-lovers are strong ties!).

Google's switch to answers.com was
driven by user experience

Google's switch to answers.com was
driven by user experience
03/14/2005 04:25 PM

Last week, I wondered aloud whether Google's switch from dictionary.com to answers.com for their "definition" links was driven by concern for their users or was just a business deal:

The cynic in me feels like money had to have changed hands in order for this to have happened (maybe Google is an investor in GuruNet, maybe GuruNet paid for that placement), but the optimist in me says that Google is still a weird little company where the members of project teams can stumble across a better resource that will make their users happier and more productive and implement it on the live site quickly, even if the company that provides that resource could be considered a competitor.

Marissa Meyer, Product Manager for Google, was kind enough to respond to my query about it:

This decision was driven off of concern for our user experience. We are not paying answers.com for this service nor are they paying us. They were willing to work with us and design a website that we felt represented an improvement for our users over what was offered on dictionary.com (no pop-ups, dense information presentation).

That a $50 billion American company is so focused on the experience presented to its users, well, it's pretty impressive.

Rotate video 90 degrees in OS X?

Rotate video 90 degrees in OS X? 02/19/2004 10:12 AM
Does anyone know of a free/cheap tool for OS X that will let me rotate video clips by 90 degrees? I have a little Exilim camera that shoots short video clips, and I'm perennially framing my clips in portrait, forgetting that the camera saves everything as a landscape-ratio AVI. I want to be able to open the clips, rotate them 90 degrees clockwise or counter-clock and save them again as AVIs or MOVs. Mail me if you know the answer, please!

OK, here are a couple of solutions for this:

  1. In QuickTime Pro: Movie -> Get Movie Properties -> Video Track/Size -- then use rotate buttons
  2. Simple Rotate, an iMovie plugin
(Thanks to Matthias, Marc, Mike, Dieter, and David!)

But Does It Oscillate, Rotate, Spin,
Pulsate Or Vibrate?
05/17/2004 04:36 AM
It started with toothbrushes, but apparently the hot thing in devices that never seemed to need battery power in the past is to toss in a battery and make them oscillate, rotate, spin, pulsate or vibrate. Apparently such battery-powered actions are showing up in toothbrushes, razors, dish brushes, pot scrubbers and stain removing devices. There are mixed opinions on whether or not such buzzing movement actually helps the device do a better job of what it's supposed to do, but some people insist it makes whatever chore they're using the device for more fun.
