Heading South

Heading South 01/03/2004 05:52 PM

Flying towards the
sun

When we decided to move to Finland one of the agreed upon features was that each year, budget permitting, we would take a Winter holiday somewhere the sun makes more of an appearance than glow occasionally on the horizon on the rare day that it's not cloudy. People always ask about the cold but the cold isn't the hard part of living in Scandinavia in the Winter, it's the darkness. November was a really hard month as the darkness really settles into your brain.

It's that time of year to go on holiday and I'm looking forward to reacting like a Sleestack to the evil, unfamiliar daystar and getting to know the cocktail boy poolside for a luxurious 7 days in Madeira. I'm going to also enjoy 7 days of internet-free living while hiking and taking pictures. It may be hard getting on the plane for the return trip. :)

South Pacific ideas?

South Pacific ideas? 12/17/2004 06:36 PM

I'm considering a trip to the South Pacific in late December/January.  Never having been there I would appreciate advice from those who have (you can use the comment section below).  Here are some things that I would like to be able to do there:  snorkeling over coral reefs that grow up very close to the surface in calm water; beginner surfing lessons; bicycle riding on quiet roads and/or mountain biking on not-very-technical trails (not super hilly); meeting interesting well-educated locals and/or tourists; renting and flying a small plane or helicopter with an instructor; reading a book on a balcony or deck overlooking the water.

As far as practicalities go, I'd like to stay 3-5 days in any one place and not spend too much time transferring from island to island.  It would be good to find some places with enough infrastructure to support comfortable mid-range hotels.  I don't want to slum it with the backpackers but I don't want to spend $1000/day to sit on a beach either.  From my cursory reading of the guidebook it seems that a lot of these islands are so underdeveloped that creating a Western-style hotel environment is very expensive.

Where to start, then, amidst the millions of square miles of the South Pacific?

South Africa, 10 years on.

South Africa, 10 years on. 12/30/2004 08:00 PM
10 years of freedom. This past year marked a full decade since South Africa held true elections. The CBC held interviews with four prominent S. Africans. Writer Zakes Mda, Leader of the Independent Democrats Patricia de Lille, Albie Sachs - judge on the Constitutional Court of South Africa, and Bulelani Ngcuka - The National Director of Public Prosecutions.
There are problems (of course), first hand reports still indicate rampant racism (As mentioned from Wired to AllAfrica.com) Some serious corr uption charges have been leveled against members of the ANC. Poverty and AID S both remain high. Despite these issues I cannot but have hope, and believe that this was the way a people should seek liberation. Congrats S.A. I hope the future continues to improve for you.

South American Dentists 05/23/2004 12:15 PM
"We can fix your teeth, you know. We can give you a great smile." Apparently the best way to get your teeth fixed these days is to visit a South American dentist. It's a really honest piece about a subject most people probably wouldn't open up about - and it's interesting to see something positive about going out of the U.S. for skilled services in these days where everyone is complaining about outsourcing.
