Spymac Forums on your desktop 03/13/2003 10:15 AM

You can now keep track of the Spymac Forums right from your Mac OS X desktop, thanks to the work of Spymac members Dave Yuill (thalez) and Ben Hartig (MacTech). Yuill skillfully modified Adam Pearson's Slashdot Konfabulator widget to create an enhanced, fully customizable Spymac utility. Hartig then worked on the interface to produce the widget you see on the left (click to enlarge). The package was originally created for our Konfabulator challenge, and you'll need to install...

Spymac speculation: the 5GB iPod

Spymac speculation: the 5GB iPod 12/02/2003 03:04 AM
When a company is leading a saturated market by several percentage points with a $299 low-end model, most would say there’s little room for improvement. With accolades galore, a corporation enjoying such a position could indeed rest until the gap closes, only to scramble once the competition catches on. Indeed… but those other companies don’t have Steve Jobs as a CEO.

Merry Christmas, Spymac!

Merry Christmas, Spymac! 12/25/2004 05:20 PM
On Spymac this Christmas, Forums are littered with missed gifts, Bamboozled, glossed-over wish lists With iPod minis and iTrips. For some, the tunes will be rocking, For others, megahertz clocking But what of all of those stockings With neither socks nor a dock nor The shocking bow-wrapped black box With a Power Mac peeking out from Under out of a bounty of wound-up frowns Not an ounce of astoundment, wow or surprise Decline in all shapes and sizes, Stifled cries and replies Of, “Oh, that’s not the right size? Should it have been bigger? White? Pink, blue or green? Did you want the red click wheel Or the new color screen?” It seems the holiday spirit Has gone the way of the Cube It’s presents now that we care about Instead of renewing The vows of tradition and family and love we hold dear, having replaced what were tidings with an endless frontier Of wrapping and ribbon And piles of debt, After two months of sweat There’s no time for regret, It’s Christmas, so let it Be, lest we forget it, If you got the wrong iPod There’s always Apple Store credit. Merry Christmas, from the Spymac News Team

WQD Forums hit 100

WQD Forums hit 100 08/27/2004 01:34 PM

In December, I announced that I quit drinking. I got a flurry of comments of support. Several of us who had decided to be sober, thought a group blog about quitting drinking would be interesting so we started We Quit Drinking, the blog. Soon, due to some weird Google magic, the blog became the first result for "quit drinking". A wide variety of people who were looking for support and help dropped in and commented. Jonas, who among other things works with addiction as a counselor, decided that a more private space, a message board requiring login might make sense so he created the WQD Forums. He announced today that WQD Forums has hit 100 members and have become a vibrant community of people who are in various stages of sobriety sharing and supporting. Since that day in December, I've received sooo much input and advice. Thank you. Some of it has been very useful and some, frankly, not so helpful. I have been to a few AA meetings and have really enjoyed them. On the other hand, I have not yet passed the first step, "Step One: We admitted we were powerless over alcohol, that our lives had become unmanageable." At the meeting I said, "I think I have a problem, but I don't yet believe that I am powerless or that my life has become unmanagable." The interesting thing is, no one was upset. One AA'er later said, "In AA, we call that 'a quart short'". I think I will still drop into AA meetings because I love the stories and the comfortable atmosphere of sharing, but until I get to Step One somehow, I don't think I can really be a true member. It's been quite a journey hearing the wide variety of opinions about drinking. I've decided on the few advisors and approaches that I think work for me now in helping manage myself. My opinion may change and if I finally believe that I am powerless and my life has become unmanagable, I know I can always count on AA, which I now believe has an incredible power to save people from alcoholism. If you thinking you have a problem or know you have a problem, try dropping by WQD Forums and join us in our emerging community.

In the wake of my past two Macworld San Francisco speculation articles, rumors have been swirling surrounding both iPod and iLife updates. That, coupled with the usual surprises and last-minute decisions, adds up to a very exciting Macworld (and well into January, no doubt). Last year’s Macworld was a whirlwind of releases and new technologies, which saw updated PowerBooks, Airport Extreme and iLife. An open discussion about the future of
Spymac

An open discussion about the future of
Spymac
06/22/2005 01:54 AM
Ladies and gentlemen, I want to take this opportunity to talk about some of the issues that we've all noticed, and to let everyone know what we're doing about them. We are also very interested in hearing the community's feedback and ideas on the below points. Harassment and the overall quality of content on Spymac Spymac has always been intended to be a safe environment that serves as a break from real-world stresses. As of late, there has been an increase in harassing notes, abusive posts and all sorts of garbage that, put simply, lessens the Spymac experience. We feel that our greatest weakness (and cruelly, our greatest strength) is that Spymac is an open community. Anyone with a unique e-mail address can register for an account and enjoy or abuse our services and community. If a member abuses his or her privileges, Spymac is able to ban that account and its corresponding e-mail and IP address. That is not enough. It is far too simple to get a new e-mail address and register through a proxy or Internet cafe, for example, only to return to wreak further havoc. It's went relatively unnoticed, but the Spymac registration system has been closed for more than a week. We are not accepting any new accounts until we find a way to link more accountability to free member accounts. This is challenging because we are an international community with a diverse demographic. We don't want to make people pay anything (such is the case if we use a verification service), and we want to keep our doors open to the world-wide Internet community. We also don't want to set a barrier that is too high for the majority of valuable users interested in registering and enjoying a Spymac account. It is my belief that members will appreciate the new, safer and cleaner Spymac. Clearly, there are countless other places on the Internet where registration is completely anonymous. We have a few processes we are working on that we feel are optimal for our situation, and we are going to provide as many alternatives as possible. It is this point especially that we are interested in hearing your ideas and suggestions. Let's talk about how we can create a safe environment without setting the barrier too high. Reliability and security This is perhaps the area that we have to prove ourselves most in, and we will. The situation we're facing is that we are upgrading our cluster to utilize high-speed fiber channel technology. In conjunction with additions to the redundancy and backup features of our cluster, this upgrade will: Make Spymac community services fly, tremendously increase the reliability of all free and paid services, and offer the peace of mind needed to store important files with us. Truly, many members have their entire life stored on Spymac — from blogs to pictures to e-mail to web-pages — and it is our top priority to give those users the speed and reliability they deserve. The upgrade has been in progress for some time now. Without getting too technical, our system needs custom programming work done before we can fully utilize the upgrade. The programmers are working as fast as they can and we will launch with the new technology very soon (before the arrival of Spymac 4), but we are unable to speed up this process. All we can do is ask for your continued support and patience in this area. Most of you have been more-than-generous in this regard and we all thank you for that. We will make it up to users who have stood with us through this difficult transition, and we look forward to hearing your comments on what we can do for you to show our appreciation. A short note on security: This area had a few holes in the past that we admittedly did not have the foresight to plan for. We had a disturbing wake up call a few months ago and have since been planning and working on an abundance of security features and precautions to protect all of your data with Fort-Knox-level security (apologies for being trite). The pendulum is now swinging in the right direction and we want you all to know how important this issue is to us. Many of the changes have already been implemented, and others will be added with time. Spam and e-mail E-mail, e-mail... e-mail... For many of you, it's why you use Spymac; Others come for the community services and couldn't care less about it. The aforementioned hardware upgrade will fix the speed and reliability, and Spymac is working with a leader in SPAM prevention to cut-back on that garbage as much as possible. Again, actions speak louder than words and we just ask for the opportunity to prove ourselves in this area. The future Spymac 4 is a great thing and the whole team is busy at work to ensure its arrival on August 31. It will bring many changes to the core of Spymac and will ensure a bright future for our community and services. We don't want to give away too many details at this point (we like surprises, we know you do, too), but we will be pre-announcing some of the new features sometime in August. In the mean time, we need some help from members who would like to beta-test the new version, and from skilled graphic artists who can work with us to complete this huge undertaking. If you would like to volunteer to assist the Spymac 4 roll-out in one of these areas, please send me an e-mail (atarist@spymac.com). You'll have to sign an NDA (non-disclosure agreement), but your help is absolutely fundamental to a successful release.

An update to the earlier story we had on a schoo ls being raided by the FBI for sharing music files, here's the news on a larger FBI operation to shut down a larger software, music and movies warez group. This makes more sense than just going after file sharing, but it still makes you wonder. There is this huge terrorist threat thing going on right now, and you would think that it might make more sense for the FBI to protect us from being blown up than to worry about people sharing music files that they can probably get on file sharing networks anyway.

Cellphone Warez Has Hidden SMS Dialer 08/09/2004 09:46 AM

trojan-mosquitos.jpg imageA cracked version of the popular "Mosquito v2.0" game for Symbian phones has turned out to include a special trojan payload: a dialer that sends a text message to the UK number 87140 with a charge of £1.50 (about $2.75) a pop. So yeah, that sucks, but you shouldn't be downloading phone warez, either.

Fortunately, if you're one of the unlucky ones who has been stung by the malware, removing it appears to be as simple as deleting the offending file. And while this is notable, and a little bit scary, maybe it should be a sign to mobile OS developers to start locking down the dialing functions of their phones a little more securely?

We Linux users have probably gotten a collective total of at least 32 trillion pieces of spam email trying to sell us Windows warez. But until now, we were always frozen out of these bargains. Unless we ran CrossOver Office, what did we need with a pirated copy of Photoshop or Microsoft Office? (Not only that, most of us use free, open source alternatives anyway.) But now we have arrived. There is finally enough commercial software for Linux that the pirates and warez spammers want our business, too.

Major DoJ warez crackdown -- Operation
Fastlink
04/22/2004 04:08 PM
Covert DoJ investigations into online swapping of copyrighted materials have identified over 100 people in the USA and other countries involved in the distribution of music, movies, and software valued at over $50 million. The initiative is called Operation Fastlink, and targeted warez groups like Fairlight, Kalisto, Echelon, Class and Project X. Excerpt from DoJ press release:
Attorney General John Ashcroft announced today the most far-reaching and aggressive enforcement action ever undertaken against organizations involved in illegal intellectual property piracy over the Internet. Beginning yesterday morning, law enforcement from 10 countries and the United States conducted over 120 searches worldwide to dismantle some of the most well-known and prolific online piracy organizations.

"Intellectual property theft is a global problem that hurts economies around the world. To be effective, we must respond globally," Attorney General Ashcroft said. "In the past 24 hours, working closely with our foreign law enforcement counterparts, we have moved aggressively to strike at the very core of the international online piracy world."

The NYT has run a goofy Red-scare piece on Internet Relay Chat, with hysterical, alarmist bushwah like "It is still possible - though sometimes a bit difficult - to find mature technical discussions among the tens of thousands of I.R.C. chat rooms" -- I mean, how "difficult" is it to type "/join #unix"?
When I.R.C. started in the 1980's, it was best known as a way for serious computer professionals worldwide to communicate in real time. It is still possible - though sometimes a bit difficult - to find mature technical discussions among the tens of thousands of I.R.C. chat rooms, known as channels, operating at any one time. There are also respectable I.R.C. systems and channels - some operated by universities or Internet service providers - for gamers seeking opponents or those who want to talk about sports or hobbies.

Still, I.R.C. perhaps most closely resembles the cantina scene in "Star Wars'': a louche hangout of digital smugglers, pirates, curiosity seekers and the people who love them (or hunt them). There seem to be I.R.C. channels dedicated to every sexual fetish, and I.R.C. users speculate that terrorists also use the networks to communicate in relative obscurity. Yet I.R.C. has its advocates, who point to its legitimate uses.

After reading a forum post yesterday inquiring about DSL vs. cable download speeds (specifically Cox Cable), I though I’d write about one of OS X’s more underappreciated applications. Let’s face it. If you’re using OS X, you’re using the Internet; and if you’re using the Internet, you’re looking for one thing: speed. For most people, dial-up just doesn’t cut it anymore, and for some, cable speeds still aren’t enough. While Safari and Camino have taken care of many gripes about page...
