Verizon sez you can't sell 867-5309, it
doesn't belong to you
02/17/2004 11:47 AM

The guy auctioning off 867-5309 (made famous in the forgettable hit 867-5309/Jenny) is collecting eBay bids despite the fact that Verizon says they won't transfer the number because number portability wasn't supposed to confer ownership (and hence the right to sell) to its customers.

But there's a question of whether the number can even be transferred to the winner once the auction ends Feb. 22. Verizon says there's no question: It can't. Individuals do not have ownership of the numbers given to them, a Verizon spokesman said.

Verizon to Sell Video Over Fiber in 2005
(Reuters)
05/19/2004 04:15 PM
Reuters - Verizon Communications Inc. (VZ.N) will begin selling video over fiber optic lines to homes and businesses in 2005, part of a long-term strategy to fight cable companies on their own turf before they erode too much of Verizon's traditional telephone business.

Verizon Admits It Plans To Sell Fiber
Access To Other ISPs

While Verizon has been threa tened to withhold fiber if the FCC forced them to share lines, that doesn't mean they're against selling those lines. Verizon has admitted (via Broadband Reports) that they're in discussions with various ISPs about offering them access to the lines. The article makes it sound like no one expected this to happen -- but that's not true. A lot of people expected them to have this option, but to price it at ridiculous rates that had little to do with the actual costs. The problem was never that Verizon didn't want to sell access to fiber lines -- just that they didn't want the government setting the price.

Now, after being threatened by the Music Corporations, it has been forced to source the music it sells to UK customers, solely from within Europe, adding a hefty two GB pounds to the price of a CD. Another wonder of copyright law.

All Your Computers Are Belong to Us

All Your Computers Are Belong to Us 12/19/2004 03:12 PM

Susan Crawford's provocative blog post about the broadcast flag brief recently filed by the FCC and Justice Department just got
Slashdotted .

The issue is whether the FCC has legal authority to mandate that manufacturers of digital television receivers incorporate "broadcast flag" technology to limit copying of digital content. As Susan points out, the government's position in court is quite expansive. The FCC is essentially claiming the authority to regulate any device that incorporates certain communications capabiliites, which includes a huge segment of the computer industry.

I'm actally working on a paper looking at the FCC's regulation of computers. It turns out that, contrary to popular belief, the FCC has been regulating computers for decades. The rhetoric about "keeping the government's hands off the Internet" is overblown. But the broadcast flag represents a dangerous exansion of government involvement in computer hardware markets. The important question isn't whether the FCC is involved in the computer industry, but why and how.

Everytime we write about cellphone jammers we get at least one piece of hate mail, usually some bizarre, long-winded rant about how I'll be the one going to jail if a doctor isn't able to receive an important phone call, etc. At the risk of inspiring those person or persons to launch yet another angry missive, there's an article over at Slate about cellphone jammers (like the handset-shaped SHO66P, pictured at right) that argues that in the era of cameraphones they might be the only way to get a modicum of privacy back. I don't know what's up with the Verizon ad sticking in Internet Explorer, but we're looking into it. Sorry for any annoyance.

Update: Okay, we killed it! Sorry about that. Apparently it was getting stuck on the page like a pop-up, although that's certainly not what it was intended to do. Thanks to the dozens of you who swore never to read the site again if we didn't fix it and the two of you who asked nicely. Verizon Says Don't Be Stupid

Verizon Says Don't Be Stupid 05/27/2004 09:35 AM
Sometimes you have to wonder why companies bother to put out press releases. We don't usually post press releases here, but some are just so odd, they deserve to be called out. Verizon Wireless put out a press release today that can best be described as telling people: don't be stupid while using your mobile phone. Basically, it's a list of things that you shouldn't do while driving and talking on your mobile phone ("Never take notes or write down phone numbers while driving!"). It's not as if someone is going to read this list, smack their head and say "Aha! No wonder I keep getting into accidents!" Then, at the end, they sneak in the real reason for this press release, first saying: "Dropped calls and dead zones can be frustrating for drivers," which may be true, but doesn't seem to have much to do with the rest of the press release. So, they quickly follow that up with the "oh, and by the way..." part of the press release reminding people that number portability is now in effect - so, if you must do stupid things on your mobile phone while driving, you might as well do them as a Verizon Wireless customer.

Verizon to Expand EV-DO

Verizon to Expand EV-DO 09/23/2004 01:03 PM
Verizon Wireless said it will introduce its 3G service to 11 markets starting next week: In what appears to be a direct hit against Wi-Fi, Verizon also said it would launch its EV-DO service in 20 airports around the country. A recent report from TeleAnalytics showed that the use of Wi-Fi in airports has grown by more than 350 percent in a six-month period. It appears that Verizon is looking to capture a bit of that demand for wireless Internet access. However, its service still costs $80 a month while most Wi-Fi access charges are significantly less....
