I'm moving to England and selling off a bunch of stuff

I'm moving to England and selling off a
bunch of stuff

I'm moving to England and selling off a
bunch of stuff
02/17/2004 11:47 AM

I've got a lot of changes coming up in my life this year. At the end of the month, I'm starting a one-month leave-of-absence from EFF, and I'll be going off to Toronto to finish my next novel, "Someone Comes to Town, Someone Leaves Town."

Then, starting on April 1, I'll be heading off to London, England, to work for Creative Commons and EFF on a variety of projects:

  • Responding to the EUIPR enforcement directive in Brussels
  • Participating in the DVB standards-body in Geneva
  • Working with large-scale UK open licensing projects
  • Representing EFF at WIPO in Geneva
It's really exciting (and I'm really frazzled!), and, in answer to some common questions:
  1. No, I'm sorry, I just don't have any time for dinner, drinks, lunch, coffee or meetings before I leave San Francisco. Every moment is spoken for. I'd love to see you at one of my book-signings, and there's a chance that I'll throw a party before I go (watch this space for details).
  2. I have a little bit of time in Toronto to hang out, but first priority is going to be finishing my novel (which, have I mentioned, is due at the end of March, eek!), seeing my family, and spending quality time with my closest friends. I'll be working out what days I have free time on after I touch down, and I'll post something here once I've got that sorted out.
  3. I would love to talk to you about EFF's plans in Europe, and/or socialize in London. Please drop me an email after April 2, once I'm off my leave-of-absence, and we'll sort something out!
Anyway, the other reason for this post is to let you know that I'm selling off a bunch of stuff that I'm not storing or shipping:
  • A deco table lamp
  • An iPod
  • An iMic
  • A bull-skull
  • An iBook stand
  • A fax machine/scanner/printer
  • A Metro shelving unit
  • A two-tub washing machine
  • A queen-sized bed and frame (comfiest bed I ever slept in)
  • A machine-washable rubber keyboard
I've put up a blog where I've listed all this stuff with prices, descriptions and pictures. I'll be adding a few more items tonight if I get the chance:
  • A city bicycle
  • Two Sony Dream Machine clock-radios
  • An oil-filled radiator
It's all as-is/final/pickup in San Francisco (no shipping, sorry!). Check out the blog for more details: Link

Good stuff and bad stuff

Good stuff and bad stuff 02/12/2004 07:25 PM
The bad stuff first: The wireless connection here sucks. It sucks less today than previously, but it is still bad. The other thing is that there are far too few power strips available, and I've on several occasions had my laptop die on me.

But the cool stuff just continues: Programmable matter and quantum dots by Wil McCarthy just blew me (and probably everyone else) away with the visions of windows that move according to sunlight, wires that grow inside the walls as needed, walls that can produce any sort of light at command, quantum wells and artifical atoms, but especially the palm-sized, paper-thin über-PDA, which does *everything*, including cooling your drinks. And it all works on "ambient energy" - harvesting stray photons, sound and movement. When any physical object can have any functionality you desire, you get into some pretty interesting scenarios...

High sci-fi, mindblowing stuff - but the theory says it should work.

Microsoft, SAP And A Whole Bunch Of
Nothing

Microsoft, SAP And A Whole Bunch Of
Nothing
06/07/2004 01:56 PM
Well, the press certainly loves this story for the headline alone, but the details are a bit less than exciting. Everyone seems to be rushing out stories about how Microsoft and SAP had some merger talks last year, but gave them up when they felt that the deal would be fairly complex (you think?) and would have integration difficulties. Companies examine the idea of merging with other companies on a fairly regular basis - and most of those conversations go nowhere (fast). This seems to be just one of those types of situations, which is just getting attention due to the names involved. It doesn't sound like the conversations ever got that far along (and you can imagine that antitrust folks would had a field day if they had).

Hey Symantech your a bunch of Idiots

Hey Symantech your a bunch of Idiots 04/01/2005 03:24 PM

I have been having this periodic problem with Norton Antivirus 2005 when I start the computer or loaded a word document windows would appear like a program was trying to load. I thought it was spyware or something. Turns out it is a bug in Norton Antivirus 2005 and here is what I found.

I was getting the message in a popup dialog box that said. "Norton Antivirus 2005 does not support repair feature reinstall Norton" , so I do that and the problem goes away.

Then a couple of days later it pops up again. I go to the Symantec support site and here is the solution to the issue and I am red in the face.

This message can happen if you have changed the default location for the Norton AntiVirus shortcuts in the Windows Start Menu. The default locations of the shortcuts are:

In Norton AntiVirus installed as part of Norton SystemWorks:

\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Norton SystemWorks\Norton AntiVirus
\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Norton SystemWorks Premier\Norton AntiVirus

Here is what that all means you are forced to have it on the main Program line. What a bunch of idiots. I like my program bar nice and organized no sole program gets to be on the main program line everything is in neat categories..

It has been a while since I tried a Mcafee product where is my credit card anyway.

The Radisson I'm staying at in Austin has a single meeting room set up with ethernet Net access. So, last night after the excellent EFF party, which I left as soon as the band started up and all conversation ended, I went there to pick up my email. It was about midnight and a handful of 20ish guys were there, along with one similarly-aged woman. The guys turned out to be the band "Trouble Is" who were on their way to LA to play a gig at the Troubador (I think). I've never heard of them, of course. But what...
