Teacher speaks

Teacher speaks 03/14/2005 06:21 PM
Teacher Kari Tuurna says that filtering software is not needed in schools, as teachers can perfectly well control what the kids are doing.

Varsinkin sellaista mikä on nimenomaan kielletty. Asia on yksinkertaista hoitaa niin, että koneeseen ei kosketa, ellei vanhempi henkilö ole valvomassa.

Erinomainen artikkeli, suosittelen lukemaan.

Dawkins speaks!

Dawkins speaks! 09/03/2004 11:20 PM
Rich ard Dawkins discusses religion with a Darwinian outlook. RD: Could religion be a recent phenomenon, sprung up since our genes underwent most of their natural selection? Its ubiquity argues against any simple version of this idea. Nevertheless, there is a version of it that I want to advocate. The propensity that was naturally selected in our ancestors was not religion per se. It had some other benefit, and it only incidentally manifests itself today as religious behavior.

Pepe speaks

Pepe speaks 09/13/2004 10:29 PM
Why al-Qaeda is winning As nihilistic as it may be, al-Qaeda, from a business point of view, is a major success: three years after September 11, it is a global brand and a global movement. The Middle East, in this scenario, is just a regional base station. This global brand does not have much to do with Islam. But it has everything to do with the globalization of anti-imperialism. And the empire, whatever its definition, has its center in Washington. Bin Laden is laughing: Bush's crusade has legitimized an obscure sect as a worldwide symbol of political revolt. How could bin Laden not vote for Bush?

The secretary speaks 09/15/2004 09:56 AM
CBS Memo-gate takes another fascinating turn this morning with a Dallas Morning News interview with the 86-year-old former secretary of Jerry Killian, George W. Bush's former commanding officer in the Texas Air National Guard. The former secretary believes the documents attributed to her boss on 60 Minutes last week are forgeries -- yet she vouches for the viewpoints expressed in them and says they reflect documents that would have been in Killian's personal file. "I remember very vividly when Bush was there and all the yak-yak that was going on about it," Marian Carr Knox told the News.

Microsoft To Bridge Office, Back Office
Apps

Microsoft To Bridge Office, Back Office
Apps
01/26/2004 01:10 AM
Microsoft continues to build bridges between Office desktop apps and reservoirs of back-office data. The "Information Worker Bridge" project now under way seeks to make it easier for integrators or in-house developers to make Excel or Word de-facto front ends for back-end accounting, ERP or other applications, sources said. In theory, this would take back-office integration beyond ODBC drivers and InfoPath, the Office application that lets people build dynamic forms on their desktops that tap into back-office XML data.

Slashdot troll speaks

Slashdot troll speaks 11/01/2003 12:57 PM
Tom Coates has been discussing technical tricks for coping with message-board trolls on his Everything in Moderation blog, and, surpisingly, an avowed Slashdot troll has shown up to explain why he undertakes extreme technical measures to disrupt Slashdot's message baords.
...i believe that the people who must be treated with the most public, forthright, and open methods of censure are those who offend us the most. i do not believe that trickery is ever as effective as open methods because trickery is, at its core, dishonest to both the person being tricked and the online community you have secretly enacted policy for.

i believe that secret punishments inevitably lead to abuse and combativeness, that they lead to an arms race against people of equal intelligence and unlimited free time.

Nationwide scream when W speaks at the
RNC
08/27/2004 10:54 PM
Cory Doctorow: Al Franken wants you to holler on September 2 when W takes the stage at the RNC.
On September 2nd, 2004, at approximately 10 pm, George W. Bush will appear on television screens nationwide. For some of our fellow citizens, this will be a moment of joy. But for most of us, it will be the low point of an incredibly exasperating week.

Until now, there have been only two options: miss the speech (either by screaming at the television or turning it off), or bottle up the frustration within us, causing irreparable psychological harm. The first option is unbecoming of citizens in a democracy. The second option is just terrible. But now, for the first time, we have a better way. At the moment we see the president on our television screens, we will rise. We will throw open our windows. And, as George W. Bush moves to the podium in New York City, we will send him a message about his bid for reelection: we will yell, "fuggedaboudit!"

This will be a peaceful, non-disruptive protest. We will stop yelling before the president starts speaking. Our goal is not to drown him out, but to communicate. (And vent.)

Sherlund Speaks. Who Listens? 06/16/2004 03:07 PM
Some industry watchers are wondering aloud about Goldman Sachs' analyst Rich Sherlund's Microsoft pronouncements. Sherlund predicted earlier this week that Microsoft would announce during its annual financial analyst meeting at the end of July that it would launch a $40 billion stock-buyback program to whittle down its cash horde. But, as The Street.com and others have noted, Sherlund was one of the original analysts on Microsoft's IPO back in the mid-1980s.
