As the holiday shopping season comes to a close, Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich is making headlines for proposed legislation that will penalize retailers for selling titles with violence or other adult content to those under 18. Game.Ars is not impressed.

Although he said his goal was to "help parents," one has to wonder if in the wake of a presidential campaign that was fought on a "values" basis, if this is just political finagling. Whatever the governor’s motivation is, one has to worry about who makes the decisions on what content would be culpable under the ban.

There's also news for Sudden Strike fans and a whole lot more gaming news from the past week.

Cingular must really like me

Cingular must really like me 02/18/2004 02:23 AM

After suffering through a year of terrible service and living with a broken phone for months while I waited for number portability, I finally switched from Cingular to AT&T Wireless last November, the day that number portability took effect. Cingular did a brief bit of marketing to me to try and convince me to stay with them. They offered new phones and touted their infrastructure upgrades but I could not be swayed. I still switched.

Now they’ve taken extreme measures to get me back as a customer. They bought AT&T Wireless for $41 billion dollars.

January has rolled around again, and it's time to hand out Wired Windows' annual Network MVP Award. This virtual award (there's no plaque, no trophy, no diamond ring and certainly no big check) is given each year to the person(s) who - in my estimation - have done the most to further their organization's network agenda during the previous year.

Tr acking Social Software Across the World Wild Web.

There are soooo many different ways to track news, memes, conversations, chatter, and just plain old noise throughout the blogosphere, the webosphere, and beyond. However, a number of my most successful tracking mechanisms usually lead back to… Google.

According to a Reuters news item—Google Leads Web Search But Challenges Loom -S&P: “Forty-eight percent of search engine users … use Google most overall, compared with 20 percent for Yahoo Inc. ... , 14 percent for Microsoft Corp.’s … MSN and 7 percent for AOL” (survey results courtesy of Standard & Poor’s and InsightExpress).

One of the many tools that I utilize is Google Web Alerts—which notifies me whenever new pages, related to my searching interests, float to the surface of the Googlesphere.

socialtextThis morning—while peeking at the shavings from the Internet iceberg tip that Google continuously mines and deposits into my Gmail account—up popped an old bit on Socialtext.

Back on December 30, 2003, Neil J. Rubenking for PC Magazine rated Socialtext four out of a possible five bullets—making it a PC Magazine “Editors’ Choice” product. (Don’t think I blogged this one.)

PS: Hey Marc Canter—there are 16 entries in “My Workspaces” on Socialtext. Could one possibly be ahead of you in just this one area?:-)

OMFG Worst. Trip. Ever. I'm at CES finally, though, and have big, big stuff to talk about. Expect short, bursty posts—not because I don't want to dazzle you with my dick jokes, but because there's just so much to cover, both CES and not.

Here's a little blurp: Cingular's rebate form for the Treo 600 has a check box for the Treo 650 even though it expires January 31st. If that doesn't mean it's going to be out that month, they mean it's going to be out real soon now.

LG_f9100.jpg imageI really wanted the Motorola A630 to rock, but almost everyone who finally has gotten their hands on one has been less than impressed. This new LG phone for Cingular looks promising, though, if only because it's got a similar form factor and has a focus on IM. The LG F9100 doesn't even have Bluetooth or a camera, which is sort of a bummer, I guess, but I could deal with it if the IM client was well crafted. We'll see soon, I guess, as it's gotten FCC approval.
