The Mobile Consolidation Begins

The Mobile Consolidation Begins

The Mobile Consolidation Begins 02/17/2004 10:32 AM

  • AP: Cing ular agrees to buy AT&T Wireless. The merger between the second and third largest U.S. wireless companies was announced Tuesday as Britain's Vodafone Group PLC withdrew from the contest after four days of rising bids. This merger won't necessarily be bad for competition.I've been using AT&T's GSM service for about a year now. Quality of service is marginal at best, and the customer service has been worse than marginal. But Cingular, also a GSM carrier, has an even worse reputation. So maybe combining these two networks will create something that offers at least reasonable quality.

Sony And BMG To Merge - Record Label
    Consolidation Begins
    11/06/2003 04:10 AM
As the big five established record labels have continued to struggle with the new digital world and all of the potential business models they prefer to ignore, it's been no surprise that they've felt lost. Thus, the rumors of mergers among the labels have been heating up over the past few months. It looks like the race to merge has begun as the NY Post is reporting that Sony Music and BMG will merge. This follows a recent failed attempt to sell BMG to Warner Music and continued talks to merge EMI with Warner. Of course, big music label mergers in the past (EMI with BMG and Warner with EMI) have been stopped by regulators, but this time people think regulators are more open to the idea. Now, here's the tricky part: chances are only one such merger will go through. So, if BMG/Sony makes it out the door first, then it may kill off the plans of Warner and EMI. Meanwhile, they'll all continue to miss any opportunity to actually embrace new business models, but that's a story for another post.

    Is Consolidation A Myth?

    Is Consolidation A Myth? 12/23/2003 02:45 AM
Thought provoking piece over at Always-On suggesting that al l this fear about consolidation killing off competition is a big myth. While there are plenty of examples of companies buying up each other (and even areas where there are fewer companies within a specific space than before) consumers have more choice than ever before, leading to better products and lower prices. Sure, it may seem like there are big media conglomerates, but there are also plenty of independent websites that give people choice. Sure, there may be fewer small local banks, but there are plenty more banks that have expanded from other areas to serve a large population. Basically, what appears to be happening is that the regional companies are being eaten up, but there's plenty of competition on a global basis. Of course, there are still some exceptions (I'm still limited in my broadband connection choice, for instance), but these might be temporary monopolies, rather than a permanent state of affairs. I'm not sure it's completely true, but I do think some fears about consolidation everywhere are overblown.

Dot Consolidation Is Back 04/19/2004 03:01 AM
In case you hadn't noticed, while the dot com IPO market looks to be heating up again, the busiest activity is actually over in the mergers and acquisitions area where internet companies are looking for consolidation opportunities before the prices of smaller companies get too out of hand again. Of course, there's no guarantee that acquiring companies will do much better than they've done in the past integrating a bunch of disparate companies into a single compelling entity, but people tend to ignore that in the heat of a merger opportunity.

Af ter the Web's Nuclear Winter, Diller Acquires ZeroDegrees?

Is the Web’s ‘Nuclear Winter’ over? And is the warmth of all of the emerging interest in Social Networking Services helping to melt the ice? BusinessWeek’s Timothy Mullaney posits that we might be in a thaw, in an article today about Barry Diller’s [CEO of InterActiveCorp] acquisition of ZeroDegrees — Diller’s Latest Little Bet on the Net — [some other InterActiveCorp companies — Expedia, Hotels.com, Home Shopping Network, Ticketmaster, Evite, Match.com, uDate, Citysearch, LendingTree, and Hotwire.com.]

Diller could make other forays into the social-networking area, says Dan Marriott, an IAC senior vice-president and head of the new-business unit. He says IAC is looking at other dating and social-connection sites, and might make an acquisition if the business can be tied to a classified advertising model, as San Francisco-based Tribe Networks is attempting. “The classified-ad approach Tribe has identified is a valid approach,” said Marriott. “There will be a market there. But we felt the business side is the right place to start.”

Dan Gillmor finds himself reluctantly supporting a Comcast-Disney merger:

"Yet, oddly, I find myself hoping the Comcast-Disney deal goes through. The temptation to discriminate in favor of its own content will surely be irresistible to the merged company. Perhaps that will finally wake up the public, if not Congress, to the threat. Nothing else has, so far."

Whether Comcast or someone else buys Disney, it will provoke a debate about the implications of media consolidation and the marriage of content and conduit.  If the merger partners say (as they surely will) that they won't discriminate against unaffiliated content and applications, they should have no objection to a public commitment to that effect.
