A New Online Community in Hong Kong

As you may know, I teach each fall at the University of Hong Kong's Journalism & Media Studies Centre, helping out with a new media course led by Andrew Lih, a professor there. The student project this year is especially interesting, I think. Here's the text of a release being sent out to various folks.

Chatter Garden, an online community for news and discussion about Hong Kong regional politics and public affairs, is now live. The English language site was created as a University of Hong Kong student project for the New Media Workshop, part of the Journalism and Media Studies Centre. Visitors are encouraged to engage in online community dialogue, writing weblog entries and moderating stories. The Web site creation was directed by assistant professor Andrew Lih and visiting lecturer Dan Gillmor, author of the book, "We the Media." While Hong Kong has one of the most free media environments in East Asia and China, there are surprisingly few forums for public discourse. Chatter Garden was inspired by other online citizen journalism projects, such as OhmyNews (Korea), Malaysiakini and DailyKOS (US) to engage citizens in discussing regional public affairs. Topics include politics, economy, culture, and "One country, Two systems." Chatter Garden is named after "Chater Garden," the park next to the government Legislative Council building, and a popular gathering place for local political rallies.

I took this shot last summer with my Nikon D100, when I first got it. I love this picture, maybe its cause i took it, or maybe it is a decent picture (I don't know.). Squirrels are some of the most unique animals to me. They just don't quit, always busy doing something.

SquirrelMail is a PHP4-based Web email client. It includes built-in pure PHP support for IMAP and SMTP, and renders all pages in pure HTML 4.0 for maximum compatibility across browsers. It also has MIME support, folder manipulation, etc. Today, new releases of both the stable and the development distribution have seen the light. The stable release incorporates many bugfixes and stability enhancements, most notable fixes: the areas of register_globals, session handling and preferences should all work more reliable. We hope this release solves the most common problems with the stable distribution. The devel release has seen many code rewrites that should result in a faster and more reliable SquirrelMail. The 1.3.2 release is one step closer to bringing 1.3 to stable.

Squirrel Mail Alternative Anyone? Help! I need an alternative to SquirrelMail since its use of the authentication daemon courier IMAP daemon (or the daemon itself) is flaky. Make that very flaky. PHP please. Any thoughts? I'm installing PHPGroupware now but it feels *L A R G E* when all I need is webmail. Note: I'm not saying that SquirrelMail isn't good but it is blowing up on my main box right now and I don't want to update a mail daemon in the middle of a work day (cautious me? yes).
