What is a webl0g?
01/27/2004 02:23 AMWhenever we update the Sites Drawer (the list of feeds that comes with
NetNewsWire) I look at a bunch of feeds and their descriptions.
Here are some descriptions from the list, just to give you a
flavor:
Random Ramblings Regularly
Rants, raves, and random thoughts on life and American culture
Rants on spam, business, digital music, patents, and other assorted
random stuff.
random thoughts on games, art, geek culture and living in new york.
random and occassionally coherent musings
random musings and explorations from the mind of [withheld]
random thoughts and ramblings
The people have voted! If anyone ever asks you what a weblog is, you
can state, with confidence, that it’s
random rants,
ramblings, and musings.
It is also, on occasion, punditry. And good old-fashioned commentary
is not unheard-of.

Webl0g Changes
Webl0g Changes
03/19/2003 10:28 PMI have decided to split my weblog in two. I basically have two
target audiences, those people who are reading this blog for Safari
news and updates, and those people who are visiting my personal blog
(i.e., friends and family).
This blog will remain the technically inclined one, and I'll
continue to blog about Safari news, Web topics, and so on. The
personal one (including all personal blog entries) has moved. I'm
still ironing out some kinks with Safari (links on the right-hand side
don't work), but if you care, you can find the personal blog here.

Have you taken the MIT webl0g survey
yet?
06/24/2005 05:14 PM
Cameron Marlow
(creator of Blogdex and a friend) is running a survey about
weblogs. If you're a weblog author, it will take you about 15 minutes
to complete and asks some straight-forward questions about when you
started blogging, what you link to and why, etc. Don't worry, no
essays are involved, you just check some boxes and click some buttons.
Please consider taking a moment to participate if you're a blogger.
With surveys, like parties, the more the merrier! And diverser!

Webl0g editors
Webl0g editors
09/22/2004 10:25 PMA few people have sent me email with ideas on competing with
ecto. Here’s the thing,
though: I like Adriaan a lot and I think ecto is cool.
The same goes for other weblog editors and their developers:
Blapp is cool,
Xjournal is cool, and I
like
Michael and
Fraser.
Daniel Berlinger does a
great job with
Archipelago (a
Manila editor)—and Daniel and I go waaaay back.
In fact, I was sad to read that
Phil Ulrich isn’t
continuing
Userspace development, because it sounded really
good and I like Phil.
One of the luxuries of running your own business that Sheila and I
enjoy is that we are allowed to make decisions that go against common
business wisdom. We could have made the NetNewsWire-MarsEdit
connection proprietary, but that would have been, well,
mean.
When NetNewsWire talks to MarsEdit, it uses the exact same API, the
exact same code, it uses to talk to ecto,
Cocoal.icio.us (by
master of ceremonies Buzz Andersen), and other software.
Maybe it’s weird or naive of me, but I
like other OS X
weblog editor developers. It’s a great group of people. And so I
find myself rooting for their success, even when we have products in
the same space. And I also find that I really like this situation.
But—more about the weblog editor space—I think the number
of people who have already bought a weblog editor is very, very small
compared to the number of people who
will buy a weblog editor.
It’s only just this year that weblog editors are starting to
become software you’d want to use day-to-day. (In other words,
the success of one editor doesn’t preclude success of
another.)
So, it’s not as if different weblog editors don’t compete.
Sure they do. But I’m totally not into playing any hardball
here: that would suck the fun out of it for me. I think of the
competition as being very friendly—but if it gives us all a bit
of incentive to work hard and make our software better, that’s
cool.
At the same time—and more importantly—we’re all
collaborating on showing that weblog editors are getting ready for
prime time.
How to write a webl0g
How to write a webl0g
09/19/2004 03:48 AMYesterday somebody pointed me towards a little essay published 2 years
ago by Mark Bernstein, 10 Tips on Writing the Living Web. What a gem!
I can't believe I haven't seen this before. As soon as I read it, I
knew that if I searched for the title, it would be cited thousands of
times. It has all the hallmarks of a classic, the first draft of
Strunk & White for writing on the web. It's a great essay about
writing on the web, but also just about writing. I won't cheat by
excerpting large portions, I'll just demonstrate that Bernstein knows
how to write a headline: Write for a reason Write often Write tight
Make good friends Find good enemies Let the story unfold Stand up,
speak out Be sexy Use your archives Relax! Highly recommended for
anyone who wants to write for the web, or just wants to learn how to
write better. Next time someone asks me, how do I start a blog, I
think I'll send them this link. After reading the essay, I became even
more impatient for Bernstein to finish the version of Tinderbox for
Windows that he is working on, so I have a chance to try it out....

Halo 2 vs. Tribes 2
Halo 2 vs. Tribes 2
12/22/2004 01:03 AMI went to visit my brother in Colorado over the weekend, and he had
a copy of Halo 2 with
an X-Box Live subscription. I didn't get to play it, but I watched
him quite a bit.
X-Box Live is hailed as the big thing that propels Halo 2 into gaming
infamy. However, in watching my brother play, I was struck by how
much it looked like a similar, older game: Tribes. It was perhaps more
graphically advanced than Tribes, but it didn't look much better than
Tribes 2.
Gameplay dynamics seemed pretty much the same. My brother was
amazed at the idea of playing people from around the world in a giant
game of capture the flag, but I just couldn't kick the thought that I
had seen this all before.
Is there anyone who has played both Halo 2 and Tribes 2 that can
comment on how similar they are or which is better? Is Halo 2
that good, or is it just Tribes 2 for the console-playing
masses? (The flame doors have just swung open...)
