A "Wellness Sensation"

A "Wellness Sensation" 02/01/2005 10:10 PM

Internal or external use?

« Aloe Vera Yogurt: medicinal cream or foodstuff? Yes, this is as deep as my thoughts get today. It tastes good, actually, but I'm tempted to apply some to the giant scrape down my arm that I got last night when I slipped and fell down the snowy stairs when leaving work. It also has an aftertaste that lingers for several hours that is reminiscent of worn sweatsocks. They're marketing it as a 'wellness sensation'. The hot buzzword used to be 'nutraceutical' but it might sound just a little too much like neuticles for comfort. »

“The topic of program emulation is not something that will light a fire in many people’s hearts, or put a spark in their eyes. But run the topic by IT professionals and you’ll likely see a glimmer of hope—followed by a dismissive wave. They’re enchanted by the promise of the technology, but haven’t exactly been thrilled with the offerings to date. Big promises, piddling results. This National Geographic story by John Roach [hehe, Roach] points out that those gazillions of "Brood X" cicadas unearthing themselves this month also double as an Atkins-compliant meal-on-the-go. Cicada McNuggets, here I come!
"They're high in protein, low in fat, no carbs," said Gene Kritsky, a biologist and cicada expert at the College of Mount St. Joseph in Cincinnati, Ohio. "They're quite nutritious, a good set of vitamins." The largest group of periodical cicadas, known as Brood X, have been crawling out of the ground and carpeting trees along the eastern United States for the past week or so. By July, Brood X will be gone--not to be heard from again for 17 years.

Cingular must really like me

Cingular must really like me 02/18/2004 02:23 AM

After suffering through a year of terrible service and living with a broken phone for months while I waited for number portability, I finally switched from Cingular to AT&T Wireless last November, the day that number portability took effect. Cingular did a brief bit of marketing to me to try and convince me to stay with them. They offered new phones and touted their infrastructure upgrades but I could not be swayed. I still switched.

Now they’ve taken extreme measures to get me back as a customer. They bought AT&T Wireless for $41 billion dollars.

LG_f9100.jpg imageI really wanted the Motorola A630 to rock, but almost everyone who finally has gotten their hands on one has been less than impressed. This new LG phone for Cingular looks promising, though, if only because it's got a similar form factor and has a focus on IM. The LG F9100 doesn't even have Bluetooth or a camera, which is sort of a bummer, I guess, but I could deal with it if the IM client was well crafted. We'll see soon, I guess, as it's gotten FCC approval.

Here's a little blurp: Cingular's rebate form for the Treo 600 has a check box for the Treo 650 even though it expires January 31st. If that doesn't mean it's going to be out that month, they mean it's going to be out real soon now.

Cingular buys AT+T Wireless

Cingular buys AT+T Wireless 02/17/2004 11:47 AM
$41 billion. What will the resulting company be, and do? Wow. Dan Gillmor has this to say about why the mega-merger shouldn't worry those concerned about carrier consolidation:
This merger won't necessarily be bad for competition.I've been using AT&T Wireless' GSM service for about a year now. Quality of service is marginal, and the customer service has been a bit lower than marginal. But Cingular, also a GSM carrier, has an even worse reputation. So maybe combining these two networks will create something that offers at least reasonable quality.

Cingular probably overpaid, but it's smart to make this deal in at least one respect. There's only room for a couple of mergers before the market gets too cozy for real competition. While expecting serious antitrust scrutiny from the Bush administration is probably futile, there's probably enough angst in Congress to keep consolidation from being rampant.
