"Can't make next week's videoconference with
head office? No problem, your computer-generated avatar will stand in
for you; having been created in your image it's a shrewd strategist in
complete command of the points you wish to make - including your
fallback position. While it sounds like it may be a long time coming,
research into intelligent agents, software programs also known as
'softbots', is progressing so quickly scientists predict this scenario
could be a reality within 10 years. ... Two researchers headed down
this path are Professor Ryszard Kowalczyk, of Swinburne University's
faculty of Information and Communication Technology, and Professor Jun
Han, also of Swinburne University, who heads a contribution to an
Australian-European Union consortium developing service-orientated
computing systems of the future. ... The project plan is to develop
agents to automate the interchange and composition of software and
services via the Internet, including software components to coordinate
business activities such as supply, distribution and sales."

Kerry finds his stride on the trail
(USATODAY.com)
01/28/2004 08:39 AMUSATODAY.com - January has been a very good month for John Kerry. He
started the year as the front-runner who flopped, the four-term
senator whose presidential prospects were discounted in favor of an
outspoken former governor of Vermont and a retired general who had
never run for anything before.

Bruce Sterling hits his stride on his
bl0g
12/02/2003 01:40 AMBruce Sterling's been running his new Wired blog for a couple months
now, and this morning, though, he hit his stride with a classic
cyberpunk-dense review-cum-rant of a Brazillian electro-pop CD. This
is killer prose.
I am digging this thing. Even a white-guy-samba
chestnut like "So Nice (Summer Samba)"
springs into a weird post-60s afterlife once it's
been globally cyberized with a samplerdelic
melange of hisses, whoops, whooshes, bleeps,
thuds and twitters. The spacey remixes of
"Tanto Tempo" sounds like they're scratching
at the edge of the universe with thick rubber
spatulas.
I pay attention to electronica for obvious reasons,
and I can always get along with easy-going,
caiparinha-blurred Brazilian beach music...
I mean, who couldn't like such stuff, it's so
harmlessly sexual and ingratiating... but techno
gives bossa nova some serious nova-osity.
The fact that these are actual songs, with
verse-verse chorus and that ruthlessly slinky
beat, gives all that synth dithering some useful
spine. Hey, it's "Brazilectronica!" This stuff
could conquer the world!

right. People that buy or sell on the
long tail shouldn't be

rather, they are in the driver's seat of the new distribution.
States and their passive consumers (of political goods) are the
ones at risk.
Voice Over Wi-Fi a Niche App
Voice Over Wi-Fi a Niche App
11/11/2003 03:11 PMA There is a lot of talk and some confusion around the value of voice
over Wi-Fi: It will take some time for the market to figure out how
extensively it should be used. I think voice over Wi-Fi can be really
useful to certain workers, but the current products have so many
shortcomings that a company must have enough of those workers and be
able to benefit enough to suffer through the headaches. Voice over
Wi-Fi will become a routine service only if the products improve
significantly....

Niche Publishing - Engadget
Niche Publishing - Engadget
03/06/2004 01:59 AMNiche publishing really isn't just for Nick Denton anymore... Peter Rojas,
the original blogger behind Gizmodo has broken out of that gig to
start Engadget... a competitor
to Gizmodo.
Denton still has a leg up (first mover advantage we used to call
it) on individuals launching one or two focused sites on their own, as
he can aggregate his entire Gawker media property audiences if he
wants to for an advertiser, or he can sell the advertising
piecemeal... but, folks like Rojas can probably make enough money off
their sites short-term to support themselves, and long term to build a
living that they enjoy.
Best of luck Peter...
Making Microsoft a niche player
Making Microsoft a niche player
08/30/2004 06:46 AMNovell engineer and manager Allison Singh recently predicted in an
Africa-based tectonic magazine article that Windows will become a
niche operating system, replaced by Linux as the new standard. A
gestalt of recent trends, events, and stories should tell you that
this prediction is right on the money. A gestalt, by the way, is a
perception or conclusion that goes beyond the sum of its parts. Here
are three of the many parts that comprise the gestalt.

Rescuing XSLT from Niche Status
10/30/2002 12:50 AMXSLT is one of the most exciting technologies to come out of the
XML family. Unfortunately, its incredible power and associated
complexity can be overwhelming to new users preventing many from
experimenting with it or causing them to quickly give up in disgust.
In fact, unless the method of teaching and the common style of use for
XSLT is radically changed to make it more accessible, XSLT will be
relegated to niche status like SGML and other powerful
technologies. -- David Jacobs
