T-Mobile and Comcast Produce Press
Release, Hotspot
05/27/2004 03:17 PM
Your editor has been trying to sort these story out for a couple of days: T-Mobile's hotzone powered by Comcast broadband: The problem with a story like this is that it's been given enormous play because it's a major city and a large area. But it's planned to be a paid location after the first six months, and it's not particularly interesting as a "partnership," because Comcast's role is mostly marketing. Sure, they're bringing in bandwidth, but any Internet provider would do. Likewise, T-Mobile has no other outdoor hotzones that I'm aware of, and it's unclear what the point is of this one: a trial balloon? The press release and coverage cites the fact that Comcast customers have access to T-Mobile's hotspot service. Sure, and so do I: the rate, as far as I can tell, is the same. Again, marketing. I thought about not covering this at all, but it's worth explicating the event. Meanwhile, in cities around the country, hotzones like NewburyOpen.net in Boston and Battery Park in Manhattan are sprouting that are commercially supported free locations designed to be free indefinitely and focusing on areas with high appropriate traffic....

Those Free AOL Minutes Don't Help When
You Rack Up $3,400 In Long Distance
04/19/2004 03:09 PM
A New Hampshire resident was upset that his AOL dialup kept kicking him offline, so he ran AOL's AutoFix program, which he said fixed the problem. He also says that the program (without him realizing it) changed the dialup phone number to a long distance toll number - something he only realized wh en a $3,400 phone bill arrived. AOL claims that it's not their problem, saying that the AutoFix program doesn't change the phone number, so that couldn't be the problem. However, now the New Hampshire Attorney General is stepping in to ask AOL to go to mediation to settle this issue - even though the actual bill is due to Verizon. It sounds like more details are needed, but now that the press is covering the story in a way that makes AOL look bad, expect them to change their tune and play nice.

Using Picasa and Hello, send a merchandise photo with a short description to BloggerBot. Using PayPal's merchant tools, generate an "add to cart" button for the item. WPA for Free under Windows 2000

WPA for Free under Windows 2000 02/12/2004 11:20 AM
WSC releases free client for Windows 2000 that supports Wi-Fi Protected Access's pre-shared key mode: Given that Microsoft hasn't offered what Wireless Security Corporation estimates is 20 percent of all Windows users worldwide access to the robust WPA encryption protocol, they've released their own client for free. Their client offers just WPA-PSK (pre-shared key), which is the mode used in homes and small offices without back-end authentication servers -- but it's still much, much better than plain old WEP, the original broken encryption method for Wi-Fi. WSC offers hosted 802.1X for Windows XP and 2000. This move of releasing a free WPA-PSK client is quite generous, as it provides them only some publicity, and doesn't lock anyone into their service offering, as WPA-PSK can be used with any WPA-supporting access point. (WSC's press release is a model of a good technical release: it explains the problem reasonably, without hype, and with accurate details that educate the reader. It presents its solution fairly, as well.)...

LucidLink Releases Free Client for Win
XP, 2000
04/04/2005 12:52 PM

LucidLink has released a free Wi-Fi client that solves some configuration, security hassles: In an interesting move, wireless security software vendor Interlink has released LucidLink Wireless Client at no cost for all Windows XP and 2000 users. The client software aids in supporting secure configurations by detecting a network's settings--Mac OS X does this built-in--and secures against evil twin and related attacks by not automatically switching to networks named the same but with different attributes. The client incorporates several security elements, meaning it can serve as a single entry point for Wi-Fi network connection, as opposed to Microsoft's broken-up approach.

LucidLink Wireless Client also works with the company's 802.1X-based authentication system that uses their proprietary to set up secure connections over Wi-Fi using software you host in house and with a secure out-of-band confirmation element. The LucidLink system allows anyone with the client installed to request access to the network without requiring that they enter a username and password. The out-of-band confirmation eliminates rogue entry.

Ex-Verizon Wireless Employee Stole
Minutes... Many, Many Minutes
08/13/2004 05:45 AM
An ex-Verizon Wireless employee has been charged with ste aling and reselling $20 million worth of prepaid cellular minutes. Since the minutes were activated via the numbers on some cards, he just copied down all the numbers. Interestingly, while the report says he stole $20 million worth of minutes, there's no indication how much he actually sold them for (or how many were actually used). Also, he continued to have access to the computer which stored the numbers after he left Verizon, which sounds like a major security screwup on Verizon Wireless' part.
