T-Mobile to provide CTIA Wi-Fi coverage

T-Mobile to provide CTIA Wi-Fi coverage 03/13/2003 10:15 AM

T-Mobile to provide CTIA Wi-Fi coverage: Alan Reiter reports that T-Mobile and Sprint contended with the organizers and conference center to have the right to offer service. They'll charge $10 per day or $20 for three days. Alan's not sure if his tutorial will have service, which is ironic.

After saturation coverage of Olympics,
why no Paralympics TV coverage in US?

After saturation coverage of Olympics,
why no Paralympics TV coverage in US?
09/07/2004 11:47 PM
Xeni Jardin: BBC Journalist and blogger Stuart Hughes says:
The Olympics were a huge success for NBC.200 million viewers. A "halo effect" that boosted other channels and programmes. An estimated $60-70 million profit (Source: Hollywood Reporter) Before the Games started, NBC boast ed of the depth and breadth of its coverage.1210 hours of events.103 commentators. 28 Olympians on the commentary team. A week from now, I'll be heading back to Athens for Greece's second remarkable major sporting event of the year. The Paraly mpics will boast:4000 athletes. 140 countries represented.525 gold medals at stake. 19 sports. There will be no American TV coverage of the Paralympics. Let me repeat that. There will be NO AMERICAN TV COVERAGE OF THE PARALYMPICS. Not one hour of live coverage. Not one commentator. Not one Olympian on the commentary team. Nothing. This at the same time that a record number of journalists are preparing to cover the Paralympics.

Undead at CTIA: Newgen 1200 03/17/2005 03:51 AM

newgen_1200.jpgIt doesn't looks so good in this picture, because the flash catches the fermenting finger oils of a thousand middle managers, but the Newgen 1200 is a lovely little phone. It's not that it looks high end, exactly, but it's small and simple, and that's good enough for me. This model is listed as dual-band 900MHz/1800MHz, right above the notice that says "Don't take pictures."

Undead at CTIA: Kodak EasyShare-one

Undead at CTIA: Kodak EasyShare-one 03/17/2005 03:51 AM

easyshare_one.jpgI couldn't figure out why Kodak wanted us down at CTIA in the first place, but that's probably because we missed the introduction of the Kodak EasyShare-one at CES. They're still not ready to launch the product (three to four months, they say), but it does hold some promise. The idea is simple: take four-megapixel pictures, edit them on the camera with touch screen and stylus, and then send them out over the Wi-Fi SD card. The problem is, it uses Ofoto (Kodak's image hosting service) for everything, even routing email through the service. I understand the decision, but it makes the camera come off less as an innovation and more like an extension of the brand. It's also a bit weird that the Wi-Fi has to use an SD-Card instead of just being built-in.

If Kodak would let you configure your own photo hosting service of choice (Flickr/.Mac/self-hosted FTP), it would be a lot more exciting.

Undead at CTIA: Newgen Concept Phone

Undead at CTIA: Newgen Concept Phone 03/17/2005 03:51 AM

newgen_concept00.jpgNewgen is a Korean company showing off some US products, most of which are tiny, shiny models that are more about small size than super feature sets—and they look pretty good, really. There's no promise that we'll actually get any of the phones, but some of the designs are pretty fun, including this concept phone that slides up and twists, basically for no good reason.

And when I was doing a little research about Newgen (I know, it won't happen again), I happened on this great CTIA round-up article from PC Mag's capable cell phone man Sascha Segan, talking about all the low-end phones being shown off at the show. Since there aren't really any new high-end phones showing up, the low-margin, fill-in-the-cracks companies are the real interesting ones.

imageon_ref2.jpgThis might be my favorite thing at CTIA and you'll never be able to buy it. This is the second-generation ATI Imageon reference platform for developers, provided by ATI to phone developers to test their software with the Imageon 3D hardware. It's sort of huge—think paving stone size—but that's not the point. And though the picture doesn't do it any justice, the 3D helicopter demo running on the reference platform looking pretty great. I don't think Imageon-based phones are going to replace the PSP or DS, but there's no reason mobile developers need to be stuck with 2D.
