URGENT: Call your Senator RIGHT NOW or
live with the Broadcast Flag forever!
06/22/2005 02:11 AMI felt the need to put this on the site in full context from
BoingBoing this is a direct and complete quote off their website.
From Boing Boing
We've heard rumors that the Broadcast Flag that Cory, the EFF, and
a coalition of pressure groups have fought so hard against (and beat
in the courts) will be sneaked back via an amendment to the giant
Senate Appropriations Bill in a sub-committee at 2PM EST on Tuesday
21st. This week is Hollywood's last chance to ram the flag past
Congress, and they're working hard to get it under the radar.
There's no time to write letters or start a media campaign: but
folk in the states below have just enough time to warn their senators,
who are all on the sub-committee. People of Alabama, Alaska, Hawaii,
Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Mexico,
North Dakota, Texas, Vermont, Washington, and Wisconsin - it's up to
you!
There's a sample script after the phone list. Remember: be cool,
collected and polite. Most of these senators won't know a thing about
the flag, until one of them makes it a throwaway amendment tomorrow.
Make sure their ears twitch when they hear "broadcast flag" today.
ALABAMA Senator Richard Shelby (202) 224-5744

Legal Team Seeks Copyright Stories for Brewster Kahle v. John Ashcroft
Lawsuit
"Lawrence Lessig and his legal
team are asking for your help. Kahle v. Ashcroft is a lawsuit that challenges changes to
U.S. copyright law that have created a large class of "orphan works"
-- creative works which are out of print and no longer commercially
available, but which are still regulated by copyright.
The Kahle team is collecting examples of people being burdened by
these copyright-related barriers to the use of orphan works. Visit the Kahle Submission Site and
tell us your story." [Copyfight]

While the FCC has fined
AT&T for violating it's own do not call list and California has gone
after a telemarketer for violating the national do not call list,
the FCC has finally made their first warning to a company for
violating the national list. They've been told they face an
$11,000 fine - per call - if they continue to violate the list.
Here's where it gets a little strange. The company doesn't deny that
they've been calling people on the list. I figure, if they admit that
they've been willfully ignoring the list, why should they get a
warning? Why not set the fine now?

UK cinema copyright warnings: a call to

UK cinema copyright warnings: a call to
action
05/15/2004 04:28 AM
I went and saw Troy, Brad Pitt's new men-in-skirts movie last night,
at the big Odeon in Leicester Square, paying £10.50 for the
privilege. Not that I begrudge it: apparently, acquiring the rights to
the Aeneid was very expensive, and they have to charge a
small fortune to viewers if they hope to recoup.
I don't even begrudge them the 30 minutes' worth of commercials they
subjected their captive audience to. Well, I did. But I didn't let it
get to me.
What did get to me was this warning, shown before nearly
every film in the UK:
"You are not permitted to use any camera or recording equipment in
this cinema. This will be treated as an attempt to breach copyright.
Any person doing so can be ejected and such articles may be
confiscated by the police. We ask the audience to be vigilant against
any such activity and report any matters arousing suspicion to cinema
staff. Thank you."
Every time I see this, my blood boils. I just paid a fortune to see
this movie, I've been subjected to 500 percent concession stand markup
and half an hour of commercials and now you're going to give
me a little lecture about how badly I'll get beaten up if I turn out
to be a pirate, and ask me to snitch on my fellow moviegoers?
It's adding insult to injury, if you ask me. It's unforgivably rude.
So here's what I've started doing: whenever this warning is screened,
I take a very obvious flash photo of it. I've done it twice now, and
both times, I got a round of applause. You can do it too. If we all do
it, if we all laugh and boo when this warning comes on, maybe the
movie companies will get the picture.

Increase Suicides
04/14/2005 04:52 AM
It seems to happen often enough that knee-jerk reactions that
involving banning things tends to have the opposite effect of what
those calling for the ban expect. The latest suggested example of
this, is that some are predicting that a ban in posting suicide
information online in Australia could actually increase the number of
suicides -- since those contemplating suicide would have no place
to turn, would feel more isolated, and might end up doing something
more rash. While people get upset about suicide info online, someone
who is seriously contemplating suicide isn't going to not do it
just because he or she can't find information online about how to do
it. If anything, some point out that in reading information about
suicide, it gives people a chance to reflect and reconsider their
decision.
