release from Sony claims they have developed the world's first fully
autonomous humanoid robot with internal power and control that is
capable of running. The
robot is an upgraded version of the Sony QRIO, a robot we've
seen before. The robot uses a control theory called Zero Moment Point
(ZMP) and in addition to running is capable of other extreme motion
that
involves one or both feet leaving the ground such as jumping.
Additional
photos
of QRIO in action can be found on the Japanese PC Watch site.
There's also a Slashdot
discussion about QRIO.

Toyota Humanoid Robot in the Works
12/30/2003 01:38 PMYahoo says that Japan's top carmaker, Toyota plans to develop a
humanoid robot by 2005. Toyota says
they will give more details in January and hopes to display the robot
at a World Exposition tradeshow in 2005. Toyota's robot will be a
worker robot and built for "practical" purposes. A tall order for the
robot includes nurse duties, factory work assistance, and rescue
operations. Toyota even has plans to sell the humanoid robot, unlike
some other Japanese companies that just build humanoid robots as test
platforms and audience entertainers. Toyota even hopes to apply some
of the newly developed technology to their cars.

Robot-savant or digital children?
Robot-savant or digital children?
08/19/2004 06:37 PMSo the big question all the critics were asking about Alex
Proyas’ latest effort was “Does it betray Asimov?”,
which is a silly question since Asimov was a bit of a hack himself.
More pertinent might be the question “Did Asimov betray
robots?”, which is also something of a silly question, but one
that probably leads to more interesting thoughts than the
critics’ dissection of tired robotic plotlines. The Great
Man’s Three Laws of Robotics (which might usefully be replaced
with three laws about the use of capitalisation in grand statements)
have caused far more discussion amongst AI aficionados than they
should have done. AI might not be so far off as one would hope, and
worryingly it looks like computer games might be the first to give us
true digital friends—rumours that Proyas’ next project is
to be titled I, Sonic appear to be unfounded. But whether Capitalism
delivers the Talkie Toastie® or the Terminator first, it is
unlikely that we will look to AI for servant hood and menial labour.

Pekee Mobile Robot Platform

Forget all that half-assed
consumer robot crap -- the Pekee Mobile Robot Platform is a
real robot, designed as an open platform for students and
researchers who want to know more about robotics and the subjects it
touches, like AI, networking, signal analysis, and particle
destabilization rays. Hell, you could even build your own
Roomba, if that's what you wanted, using the capabilities of the
embedded microcontrollers (Mitsubishi M16c) , video camera, 802.11b,
gyrometers, and temperature, light, shock, and infrared sensors. You
can even program it in good ol' Visual C++ (or something more robust,
probably, if you're bright enough to code your own interface). Sure,
its casing looks like a Volkswagen dropping, but for $10k you can't
expect to get ED-209.

Asimo in motion
12/29/2004 10:00 AM
David Pescovitz:

I love this video of Honda's new-and-improved
Asimo robot running. He
moves like a cute old man chasing a bus. From the
press
release:
"The combination of newly developed high-response hardware
and the new Posture Control technology enables ASIMO to proactively
bend or twist its torso to maintain its balance and prevent the
problems of foot slippage and spinning in the air, which accompany
movement at higher speeds. ASIMO is now capable of running at a speed
of 3km/hour. In addition, walking speed has been increased from the
previous 1.6 km/hour to 2.5 km/hour."
