Snapz Pro updated with audio fix, more 07/12/2004 07:13 AM
Ambrosia Software Inc. has updated its screen capture and QuickTime movie recording utility Snapz Pro X to version 2.0.1. The new release sports a fix for an audio problem that could cause a freeze on some machines running Mac OS X v10.3.4. The image preview now displays the amount of disk space it uses, the software remembers video and audio/microphone compression settings following reboots, the register program supports multiple languages, and a number of other bugs were fixed as well. Snapz Pro costs US$69; upgrades from 1.0 with movie recording capabilities cost $20. The upgrade is free to Snapz Pro 2.0 users. System requirements call for Mac OS X v10.2 or later.

Snapz Pro X 2.0.2 Provides Tiger Compatibility -- Ambrosia Software has released Snapz Pro X 2.0.2, a minor upgrade to the company's essential screen capture software. The upgrade provides full Tiger compatibility, fixes a few bugs, is localized for Traditional Chinese, and includes an uninstaller. Every author I know relies on Snapz Pro X for screenshots, and although this is clearly not a major upgrade, it's worth keeping up with the latest version. The upgrade is free to registered customers; Snapz Pro X normally costs $30 for still screen captures, or $70 for the version that can capture actions as movies.

madden_360.jpgEA Sports is showing off screenshots of 'Madden: Next Gen,' the working name for the version of Madden for a "next generation" console. We have it on good word (and really, it's sort of obvious, timing-wise) that it's a live render of a shot on the Xbox 360. ESPN will be running a 30 second clip of the game during the NFL draft coverage on April 23rd.

One thing is already certain about this upcoming console war: Microsoft is making a lot more noise than anybody else. (Thanks, Lumpia!)

Tiger Mail screenshot and user interface

Tiger Mail screenshot and user interface 03/30/2005 05:35 PM
I find the screenshot of Mail for OS X 10.4 fascinating.

The first thing I notice is that the mailboxes aren’t in a drawer anymore, which I think is a good thing.

A few other things:

1. The toolbar background appears to be some sort of gradient. As in a metal window, there is no line between the top of the window and the toolbar buttons. But it’s not metal. It looks new. (The screenshot of system preferences has the same look.)

2. The toolbar icons appear to be embedded in some kind of new button. Whether it’s a new button style or just a look for the Mail toolbar icons I can’t tell from the screenshot.

3. The mailbox list has a background color. This may or may not be customizable—you can’t tell from the screenshot. It’s a good guess that, if customizable, the color shown is the default color. This is interesting because I can’t think of any other source lists from Apple that have colored backgrounds by default.

4. The vertical splitview dividing the mailboxes from the rest of the window is not a standard splitview. (Unless it’s new in OS X 10.4.) (Actually, I’m just assuming it’s a splitview.) Note how the apparent thickness of the divider is zero. The horizontal splitview looks more like a standard splitview—though I’ve squinted at it a bit and started to wonder if that’s true.

5. I don’t see a status bar. (It could be that, like Safari, the status bar is hidden by default. Or it could be that it was added after this screenshot was taken. Or maybe there just isn’t one. I don’t know.)

So... what do you think?

(Note: remember to respect any and all non-disclosure agreements. We’re just looking at public screenshots. And these screenshots may or may not resemble the final, shipping versions.)

What You Get Is What You CSS, With Style
Master 4.0

What You Get Is What You CSS, With Style
Master 4.0
03/22/2005 04:59 PM
Matt Neuburg (~320 words)

Western Civilisation's flagship product, Style Master, is a CSS editor. You don't use it to create Web pages; you use it to create the look of Web pages - the font, size, color, and layout of the various elements that constitute your Web pages, as dictated though a CSS "style sheet." Style Master is my ideal of a program that knows a big complicated language so that you don't have to; you do see the actual CSS, but you can interact with it through pop-up menus and checkboxes that list the appropriate options and generate the correct syntax.
