Feel Your Text Messages
04/22/2004 08:00 PMResearchers in Germany have developed a new system to
feel text
messages. It's almost as bizarre as it sounds. It's not quite
braille for mobile phones. The idea isn't to translate entire
messages but to give general feelings based on specific keywords,
which are then sent to tiny fingertip sensors to indicate the general
meaning of a message. Thus, it can be used to indicate a meeting
between two people at a certain location by sending the message "you,
me, location." Of course, the learning curve on this seems likely to
make sure it's not used very widely. You need to learn to understand
the tactile "melodies" it gives, you need to program it to understand
certain words and associate them with specific tactile signals, and
you need to tell others messaging you to use the specific keywords
that set the thing off. And, of course, you have to wonder how many
times you'll be in a situation where you can't just glance at the
screen and get the point of the message instead of needing to read the
message by feel. The researchers seem to recognize it isn't entirely
practical - saying that it can be used for art-installations or for
basic communications for those who are deaf or blind, rather than as a
true replacement for basic text messaging. Still, it seems like one
potential interesting use is moving more into the traditional
haptics/feedback world, where it could be used to give people specific
signals. For example, in a car, if a lane departure warning system
senses the driver is drifting out of their lane, the steering wheel
could return a specific "tactile melody" that would alert the driver
to move back into their lane - though, again, perhaps a audio alarm
would be more effective.

hotel worker last summer, the woman exchanged cell phone text messages
with a former boyfriend and someone else. What's in those messages
could help determine whether the sex was consensual or whether Bryant
is guilty of rape as charged. The judge himself said the content may
be "highly relevant" to the case.

futile it might be in the end -- while his current unlimited plan
costs only $6.29 a month, after the rate hike the same amount of

Iranian Election Text Messages Could

Iranian Election Text Messages Could
Backfire As Politicians Freak Out
06/22/2005 02:17 AMThere have been plenty of stories about how mobile text messaging has
played a role in recent elections in places like
South Korea and the Philippines, among other places. So it's
not really surprising to find out that text messaging has been very
popular in Iran as well, which has a tremendously large younger
generation. However, unlike in those other places, it appears that
the politicians in question haven't quite learned how to adapt to the
changing technology. Since most of the effort is against a
particularly candidate, he's now
now threatening revenge against anyone
who sent SMS messages that were negative towards him: "I have the
address and phone numbers of those who have slandered me (in the text
messages)." The local judiciary is also making it clear that such
messages are illegal and they'll prosecute those involved. Imagine if
you had a similar situation in the US during elections where
mud-slinging is encouraged? Given Iran's history of
imprisoning bloggers and others who they
dislike, this is, obviously, a serious matter -- but it's just a
reminder that the things that we take for granted about open
communications thanks to new technologies aren't quite so embraced in
other parts of the world.
