Three phone calls that form a loop...

Three phone calls that form a loop... 06/22/2005 02:24 AM

So I'm standing in the bar after Cal's awesome event yesterday and my phone tells me that I have a voice mail. I find somewhere relatively quiet and try and listen to it - it's the people from Traceline ringing me up. They've left one of those utterly aggravating messages that sounds kind of urgent and alarming and downbeat but don't tell you anything so you're left to suspect the worse. Something like, "{Sigh} Mr Coates, I'm ringing from Traceline. {Sigh / Sympathetic noise} I'm ringing regarding your attempt to find your father. {Serious face inferred, maybe eyebrow action of some kind, perhaps a solitary tear} If you could ring me back I'll go into lurid details about how your absent father that you've not seen since you were four has been ground up by some kind of articulated sausagemeat machine after slipping on a patch of lard literally ten seconds after hearing you were looking for him." The whole last section is what's going on in my head, anyway. Then they leave a phone number in the UK at an insane staccato rhythm and hang up. Five attempts to get the number written down later, it decides to delete itself.

This kind of throws me for a loop. Is he dead? Are they ringing up to tell me that he's dead? Why else would they be so apparently evasive and sympathetic on the phone. I think about the time difference - they're now asleep and won't be awake until I'm asleep. I go out for Mexican food and try and put it out of my mind. They make Guacamole at the table. I have a Margarita-fueled microfight with a guy from Technorati about Microformats.

We wind the reel on and suddenly it's 4am PST and I'm asleep on Leslie's sofa and my mobile rings - it's the lady from Traceline. She's not at all apocalyptic now - evidently she had been a bit tired in the earlier phone call. Poor love. I become increasingly clear that Traceline should fire people who get moody when they've not had enough biscuits rather than let them take it out on the people to whom they're delivering news about lost/dead relatives. But that's another story. In the meantime, she has news and it's ... irritating. They've found someone who matches the sparse data that I was able to provide them with - they don't know his middle name, but he has the initial 'J' - and they're keen to get more information so that they can better assess if this is the right guy or not. Specifically they want to know his mother's maiden name. Unfortunately, I have no more information at all that I can provide. They agree to send me some details of the person they've found. I put down the phone. It's 4.05am.

New reactions - is this the right guy? What if it's not the right guy? Is this crap ever going to end? Why can't it be easy? Should I ring my mother and see if she knows his mother's maiden name after all? How the hell do I write a letter to someone who might be my father? This whole enterprise sucks - the whole point was that it would be the right guy and that if he was alive I could write to him and say what I needed to say and then even if he didn't reply at least I'd know he'd read it. At least I'd know he was alive. This whole vague bullshit - "Dear Mr Coates, I think you might be my birth father. Course you might not. Are you? Um. Love, your son? I think?" - what the crap is that about... That's no good at all.

4.15am, I decide to ring my mother. My little brother answers. I miss my little brother. I don't think he knows I'm doing any of this. No one in my family reads my weblog, anyway. My mother appears to be out, so I leave a sleepy message with him that doesn't mention any of the parental stuff.

And what I realise afterwards is that all in fact it did say was that it was 4am, I'm in the States, I sound a bit sad and I didn't leave a message. What I have done, in fact, is leave one of those utterly aggravating messages that sounds kind of urgent and alarming and downbeat but don't tell you anything so you're left to suspect the worse. I now imagine my mother getting home and sitting nervously by the phone trying to work out if I've been ground up by some kind of articulated sausage machine after slipping on a patch of lard. And of course she could ring me, but she won't...

The Digital Music Doctor has released a new analysis which assesses the attempts of two pro audio software leaders, Cakewalk Sonar and Steinberg Cubase, to make inroads into the loop composition software market. Sonic Foundry Acid (since acquired by Sony) defined that market when it was released in 1998 and remains the leader. However, recently Sonar and Cubase have been moving aggressively to make inroads into that space. [PRWEB Apr 6, 2005]

How VoIP Makes Dedicated Loop DSL

How VoIP Makes Dedicated Loop DSL
    Reasonable
    07/08/2004 12:33 PM
For all the fears over the end of forcing the Bells to lease their lines, it looks like it might not be that big a deal. One of the biggest issues was supposed to be that competitive DSL providers, like Covad, could no longer lease lines and would have to go back to more expensive dedicated loop DSL offerings where they install their own equipment. This was the way those DSL providers started out, but it proved to be way too expensive. However, with the rise of VoIP, suddenly the competitive DSL providers are discovering that dedica ted loop DSL can now be a lot more profitable. The expense of adding VoIP is not high (it's just an application on the network, really), but the ability to charge more for it is clear. Even better, some of the RBOCs are still in this mindset where they need to keep their DSL offering bundled with their voice offering, making it much easier for competitive DSL providers to come in and offer "naked DSL" along with VoIP for a very competitive price. These competitive providers still face an uphill battle against the Bells, but it may not be as bad as some have made it out to be. If anything, it may force more innovation from both the competitive providers and the Bells.

    Sidekick Vs. Treo 600

    Sidekick Vs. Treo 600 07/30/2004 09:56 AM

I'm a fan of both the Sidekick and the Treo 600, so when Levi Wallach wrote to tell me about his in-depth comparison article featuring the two keyboarded messenger devices, I immediately did what any sane person would do and read it and then forgot to post about it. Fortunately for you, that was only like last week, and the information is no less pertinent. In fact, with the Sidekick II and the Treo Ace/610 just around the corner, bargain-minded shoppers would do well to pay extra attention to the two devices that are still plenty capable and about to get plenty cheap.

    T-Mobile Sidekick II Reviewed

    T-Mobile Sidekick II Reviewed 08/04/2004 09:57 AM

tmo_sidekick_ii.jpg imageSo, uhm, I guess the wait for the T-Mobile Sidekick II is about over since PC Magazine just put up a review. Way to start the hype machine, Danger! Maybe they decided not to really talk it up because it looks sort of, you know, bland. I mean, come on, VGA camera? Is the Sidekick destined to remain the sort-of-cool cellphone with the crappy camera? How about user-developed applications? When do we get those?

I guess I'll reserve final judgement until I can play around with the new unit, but for now it looks like a modest upgrade to a unit sorely in need of some juice in the first place. Also, I'm still a little bit bitter Danger got so fussy a few months back when we leaked the images of the Sidekick II. We only leaked because we cared! (Thanks, RVK!)

T-Mobile Sidekick II On Sale Now 09/21/2004 10:39 AM

sidekick_ii_review.jpg imageHey, Sidekick II fans that didn't hook up with the upgrade offer: it's out. T-Mobile is officially offering the Sidekick II on their website for all the plebes. My problems with T-Mobile's customer service aside, the Sidekick II is a fantastic phone, and if you're already a happy Sidekick user, you should definitely take the plunge on the upgrade.

Oh, and from what I've heard (but not from T-Mo), if you don't want to order online, the retail stores should have it in stock tomorrow.

T-Mobile Sidekick II Review: Best Phone

T-Mobile Sidekick II Review: Best Phone
    I'll Never Buy
    08/19/2004 03:13 PM

sidekick_ii_review.jpg imageSo I'm heartbroken. I've just spent a week using the T-Mobile Sidekick II, and I think it's probably one of the best mobile devices I've ever used. And I can say, with total conviction, that I will never, ever purchase one and neither should you. In fact, after the experiences I've had today with T-Mobile, I'm not sure I can ever recommend one of their products again.

You may have noticed I'm a little slow on posting today. The reason is, besides being really, really high, is that I've spent about two hours on the phone with various customer service reps trying to resolve an issue that's been plaguing my primary account for the last three months. I've stayed away from mentioning it on Gizmodo, because I didn't want to turn my personal experiences into an overall anti-T-Mobile bias, but after my experiences today, with the yelling, the lies, and the misdirections, I am finally leaving them for good, and I have received such consistent horrible, deceitful service that I've come to realize it's indicative of a larger overall problem with the company - and that's worth telling you about.

But first, let me explain why the Sidekick II is so awesome.

    Sidekick Synching on T-Mobile Petition

Sidekick Synching on T-Mobile Petition 06/10/2004 07:55 AM

Although web petitions are about as effective at charging corporate policy as complaints to customer service agents or extremely huffy forum posts, Levi Wallach is doing what he can to encourage T-Mobile to support synching on the Danger Sidekick -- something promised by the company for years and which is currently being supported by non-U.S. cellular vendor Cable & Wireless. Since all the data that goes to and from the Sidekicks has to go through T-Mobiles servers (instead of just their network), I would guess they would have to upgrade all their internal hardware to support something like this, something perennial tightasses like T-Mobile are loathe to do. But hey, sign Levi's petition and see what they say, if anything.

Instead it sounds like whatever call center is on the other end of the Magical Secret Phone Number has been getting slammed for two days straight. So if you can't get through, hey, just call lots more!

Also, you Sidekick users are creepy. Even a real internet friend of mine edited out the secret 800 number before forwarding me the email, as if T-Mobile was going to come to his house and slap his Sidekick out of his mouth if he leaked the number. That being said, I'm not going to post it, either. If you are a Sidekick user now, you should have gotten the email already.

Speaking of FCC leaks, looks like the Sidekick II -- note the T-Mobile 'Sidekick' branding, and not 'Hiptop' -- is approved for FCC use, which means among other things pictures and user manuals have been revealed. It looks similar to the unit we posted a few months ago, but it looks like the camera on the back might include a flash, to which we say with no shame at all, "Oh, snap!" (Okay, maybe a little shame). Go ahead and dig around on the FCC site and see what you can find and we'll do the same. Let's just hope and pray that camera is 1-megapixel plus.

Still no Treo 600 for T-Mobile

    Still no Treo 600 for T-Mobile 12/02/2003 04:53 PM
It's December already and T-Mobile still isn't carrying the Treo 600. Shedding some light on the matter is an email that reader Zachary Conine just recently received from their customer service:Thank you for taking the time to contact T-Mobile. We are currently experiencing some problems regarding synching the Treo 600 with our network which has delayed the release of this device. We hope to have these issues resolved in a timely matter and should be releasing this device sometime in December. So T-Mobile subscribers lusting after the Treo 600 are either going to have wait a little while longer, buy an unlocked Treo 600 and hope it works, or switch to another carrier....

Nokia, the world's largest mobile telephone maker, is getting awfully close to bringing a handheld, Internet-connected television to the consumer market. The Finland-based megacorporation has launched a new category of handheld product -- called mobile media devices -- which feature Nokia's largest, most colorful display: a 640x320 touch-sensitive screen that renders as many as 65,536 colors. Nokia says these new devices, to hit the market in Q2 of 2004, offer plenty of new opportunity for Symbian, Java, and C++ developers and is now making SDKs available for free download.

    Unconfirmed: T-Mobile Treo 650 Soon? 04/12/2005 07:44 AM

treo_650.jpgReader Nick J writes in with this little blip about a surprise yesterday.

"Hey joel, not sure if this is news, but t-mobile sent my company 3 treo 650s as a thank-you for renewing a bunch of cell phone accounts. i hadn't heard anything official about t-mobile supporting treo 650, but this is clear evidence."

Anyone else heard anything concrete about this?

Treo 600 from T-Mobile by the end of the
    month
    11/14/2003 04:03 PM
After our post yesterday about how AT&T Wireless is finally carrying the Treo 600, a few people wrote in asking when T-Mobile would get its act together and finally offer the new smartphone as well. Well, rather than pester us about this (not that we minded), resourceful reader Zach Conine just contacted T-Mobile customer service directly, and they told him that they're planning to "launch support" for the Treo 600 at the end of this month....
