Nokia Bluetooth Picture Headset HS-13w 09/10/2004 09:26 AM

nokia_hs-13w_narrow.jpg imageIn all the fuss over the new Nokia fashion phones yesterday, I missed this Nokia Bluetooth Picture Headset (the HS-13w); fortunately, our pal Josh Rubin's keen eye scoped it out. The cool thing about the HS-13w is that it's meant to be worn as a locket, where you can use the built-in color display to look up and dial contacts. That way you can keep Nokia's funky 7280 (or any other Bluetooth-handset compatible Nokia) in your pocket. Pretty slick.

First Nokia Series 60 Worm Discovered,
Infects Via Bluetooth

First Nokia Series 60 Worm Discovered,
Infects Via Bluetooth
06/15/2004 11:54 AM

bluetooth.jpgIt's only a proof of concept for now, but Symantec's Security Response site is listing the first worm for Nokia Series 60 phones, called EPOC.Cabir. The worm transmits itself over open Bluetooth connections to other phones, copying itself over where it continues to search for other Bluetooth-enabled devices -- after copying itself to another, hidden directory from where it executes, meaning even deleting the trojan .SIS file and rebooting won't stop the worm from replicating.

Since EPOC.Cabir is proof of concept alone for now, there is no payload (like deleting all your contacts or something), besides the diminished battery life of a phone always actively searching and copying over Bluetooth. Don't get too worried, for now, but make sure you have disabled Bluetooth when not in use and never accept Bluetooth connections from unknown sources or open/execute files from unknown sources -- you know, all the basic network safety tips you should know from when we all collectively saved the internet from Outlook viruses.

NOKIA_7280.jpg imageOkay, so Nokia just dropped three phones onto us, and they're pretty crazy, and by 'crazy' I mean 'sort of ugly.' I have to cop to sort of liking the Tron-style and the asymetrical design - the one round corner, one square corner 'new Nokia' look - but I have a feeling I'll be in the minority. Would it kill them to just release a nice, silver phone that you could take home to mom?

Anyway, here's the breakdown, and I'll probably go after this post in a couple of waves. The one pictured here is the Nokia 7280, which you might notice doesn't have a keypad. That's because Nokia designed it to be "sleek," "sexy," and "edgy." (I'm not joking.)

Wireles GPS Module LD-1W
09/23/2004 07:13 AM

headset_gps_nkoi.jpg imageAnd last but not least (if you're reading from the bottom up; otherwise, welcome to the Nokia posts!) are these two new peripherals from Nokia, a new Nokia Wireless Headset HS-11W headset with a 6 hour talk time, and this Nokia Wireless GPS Module LD-1W that also connects to your phone or PDA via Bluetooth (the GPS may not actually be new - it seems sort of familiar - but I don't exactly recall hearing about it before). The GPS unit uses the same battery and charge plug as most Nokia phones, so you can use your existing charge to go along with it.

The headset should be out later this year, while the GPS unit isn't scheduled until Q1 2005.

Nokia 1110 and Nokia 1600

Nokia 1110 and Nokia 1600 06/06/2005 12:09 AM

nokia_1600.jpgNokia announced their 1600 and 1110 models, meant to be affordable, easy-to-use and light on frills. Nokia is targeting developing nations with these models and they look well enough to suit their purpose as part of a plan to eventually offer mobile service for just $5 a month. They both feature talk times of over 5 hours and the Nokia 1600 has a 65k color screen while the Nokia 1110 uses a sunlight-friendly inverted black and white display. They're expected to retail for $105 and $85, respectively, and will be available later this year.

Bluetooth EDR: Triple Speed Bluetooth

Bluetooth EDR: Triple Speed Bluetooth 06/10/2004 11:38 AM

bluetooth.jpgThe Bluetooth SIG, the group that controls the standards that define the short-range radio networking technology has announced a proposal for a new version of Bluetooth that offers data rates almost 3 times as fast as the previous version. Called Bluetooth EDR (for Enhanced Data Rate), the new specification claims data rates of up to 2.1Mbps and remains backward-compatible with the original Bluetooth spec. No word, however, if the enhanced data rate will causes a proportionate decrease in range, not unlike 802.11g compares to 802.11b.
