Angry at the Cat

Angry at the Cat 03/17/2005 03:17 AM
This is my one-year anniversary at Sun, and I just wrote a little sermon about the company. On a personal note, by way of amplifying that little disclaimer over to your right, I should say this: I wake up before anyone else in the house, even when I’ve been working late, which is usually. When I come downstairs our mangy old loudmouth cat accosts me for breakfast and I have to feed him or he’s gonna wake up the family. And that 60-second delay really irritates me because I can’t wait to get online and see what’s happening. Which is to say, I’m having fun. I’m in the computer business where I belong, and I’m getting chances, in a small way, to make a difference here and there. Thanks are due at this point to Simon Phipps and John Fowler for getting me the job, to Rachel Laxa and Lorena Cerillo for helping me figure out how things work, to Juan Carlos Soto for good advice and moral support, to a lot of other people at Sun for letting me run with some of my weird ideas, and to Lauren for putting up with my enthusiasms. Oh, and as of today, I’m a shareholder too. So call me a soulless corporate drone, baby, I can take it.

Angry old man

Angry old man 12/22/2004 01:49 AM

I had a moment the other day where I realized I was getting old. And not just having a creaking back or something, I was actually decrying a new technology, in a "get the hell off my lawn with your crazy electronic scooters!" way.

Those new automated supermarket self-checkout machines that let you buy food and bag it yourself? I don't like them. Even though I own a zillion gadgets and love that technology makes our lives easier, for some reason I actually like the interactions with my local grocery store's staff as they check and bag my stuff and would hate to see those jobs go. I even go to a local supermarket chain that costs slightly more but has a 1950's service-is-king quality about it (they have better food choices too).

Then I thought about similar systems I do like. At the airport, I really like the self-check in vs. waiting in line for 45 minutes to get my ticket in 30 seconds from a human. I realized it was probably since my interactions with airline personel are usually slow and unpleasant that I prefer a machine.

But the folks at my supermarket are nice and always helpful to the point that I wish they weren't replaced by computers.

Damn kids, and your new-fangled checkout machines.

Wrath of an angry dog

Wrath of an angry dog 03/06/2004 01:55 AM

HoneyBear, the conehead

Who cares about the wrath of an aloof, mysterious, erratic and possibly fictitious god when you have 60kg of angry dog in your living room? Honeybear today endured a trip to the vet, a bath, trimming of matts, an ear cleaning, ointment and pills and, the final insult, a cone. He has been giving me baleful looks all afternoon and I'm just embracing the guilt. I even went out and bought some fatty pork to fry up and add to his kibble tonight. I'm hoping that meat may soothe some of the hurt feelings he has after I couldn't help but laugh as I watched him try to navigate around the house and bump into things. It was adorable in a difficult to admit to sort of way. :) Yes, I'm whipped and desperate to appease an angry Dog.

He has had an irritated patch of skin on his left front paw for a few months that looks icky because he licks it, but aside from the purple fur from the saliva it doesn't do much. Over the weekend he developed a very aggressive growth between two of his toes on his right front paw that prompted the visit to the vet. He is almost 13 years old, which for a saint is positively ancient, so I was expecting the worst but the vet thinks that a course of antibiotics, a corticosteroid creme and the cone to keep him from slurping it constantly will be effective since it may be an allergic reaction to something aggravated by his diligent applications of saliva. If not, we'll have to have a biopsy and see what to do then. So...here's hoping the old geezer gets well soon and doesn't extort me for a thick, juicy steak every night until he sleeps the long sleep. :)

Is Dean Angry?

Is Dean Angry? 01/26/2004 08:44 PM
Here’s what confuses me:

Some people say that TV inaccurately portrays Dean as angry.

I don’t know where that comes from.

Dean built his campaign on the idea that you can use the Internet to build a grass-roots movement of people who are angry at Bush over the Iraq War, the Patriot Act, unemployment, and the environment.

It worked—he tapped into an already-existing anger. He was an angry person leading angry people. Why not? Maybe people thought they had really good reasons to be angry at Bush.

If the war isn’t just, if people died for no good cause; if our liberties are being taken away for cynical and mean reasons; if the environment and the economy are being destroyed to line the pockets of friends of Bush... if you think all that, I don’t see how you can avoid being angry.

Maybe Dean wants to appeal to a broader set of people by appearing more Presidential and less angry. That’s probably the right move to make right now. But blaming TV for reporting on Dean’s anger seems surreal to me.

Why are we angry with the Philippines?

Why are we angry with the Philippines? 07/23/2004 11:42 PM

While I've been "oot and aboot" (as the Canadians say) with N505WT the natives seem to have become restless and angry with the Philippines.  From what I read the Filipinos were in Iraq on a "humanitarian" mission.  One of their guys was kidnapped so they went home.  So now we Americans are pissed off that they caved into the demands of the kidnappers/beheaders.  None of the newspaper articles that I saw, however, questioned the original purpose.  Though some Iraqis appear on CNN to complain that they don't have air-conditioning and 24/7 running water it is hard to see them as a hardship case in a world where many people have never had A/C or running water.  Shouldn't "humanitarian" missions go to places where either (a) folks are really doing badly, (b) folks are genuinely grateful for assistance, (c) folks are living right next door to us (charity begins at home), or (d) all of the above?

The most recent post on Brendan Grant's site is an unfortunate one: "For those who do not know, back on July 12th I had my house broken into." The full story is over here, but it has a upside: Grant recently picked up a used webcam that takes shots automatically when someone walks past, and caught the break-in.

Too Angry To Be Elected: Harry Truman

Too Angry To Be Elected: Harry Truman 12/15/2003 11:40 AM
There's an argument going around that Howard Dean is too "angry and brusque" and that his campaign is "giving angry, protest-oriented activists the rope they need to hang the party". Certainly, the Republicans are gearing up to push this angle. However, it pays to know history; specifically, the presidential election of 1948. That year, much to the surprise of the pundits and oddsmakers, Harry Truman beat Thomas Dewey by a healthy margin, both in the popular vote and electoral vote.

    Customers Angry Over Enterprise Software

Customers Angry Over Enterprise Software 02/11/2004 09:38 PM
If you've been involved in the buying or selling of enterprise software, you're likely aware that much of it is something of a scam. The prices are quite flexible, and the "real" costs show up much later, when people realize that (a) the product doesn't really work the way they wanted it to (b) it needs ridiculous amounts of expensive customization, maintenance and training and (c) the vendor is always breathing down their neck to pay for an "upgrade" and service contract. As it stands, the incentives for the vendors are to make the initial price seem low, but to make sure the actual software doesn't work very well. It appears that customers are starting to catch on and increasingly angry about standard practices in enterprise software. They're also (finally!) threatening to stop playing into the system and changing their buying habits. They're training their own people to support the system, they're renegotiating maintenance contracts and they're switching to "more accommodating" vendors. Clearly, there's room for companies to come in with much more reasonable offerings. In some cases, I imagine this is going to take the form of ASP or hosted offerings, but those are still limited depending on what the customer needs. It could make sense for a company to pull a PR move and start advertising much more transparent pricing plans to better attract customers who feel more comfortable knowing what they're really paying for.
