Oedipus. The Movie. Starring Vegetables.

Oedipus. The Movie. Starring Vegetables. 09/19/2004 02:08 PM
Xeni Jardin: Jason Wishnow, creator of two infamous Star Wars documentaries -- Tatooine or Bust and Star Wars or Bust -- has a new short out. An eight-minute rendition of Sophocles' classic tale of Oedipus, performed by fresh produce.

"Sex, violence, and cauliflower abounds!", says Jason, who tells us the film is "Performed by vegetables -- In the tradition of BEN-HUR. See a potato as it was meant to be seen, 15 feet tall!"

It's screening at fests all over the place over the next couple of months, including dates in SF and LA in the next two weeks. You can also download production stills and other goodies on the project's website. I haven't seen it, but it sounds great. And low-carb. Billy Dee Williams does voiceover for the "handsomest of all bell peppers." The production notes are cracking me up.

"We shot the Senate Plaza with a handful of real olives then digitally expanded the scene to a cast of thousands. True to the spirit of 1950s cinema, we racially profiled our extras. Green olives play soldiers, black olives play slaves, and the citizens are Greek olives."
Question 1: If animation with clay figures = claymation, and marionettes on steroids (a la Team America) = supermarionation, then what's this? Vegemation? Question 2: Do male lead broccoli stalks carry SAG cards, or "certified organic" stickers? Question 3: If a scene shot with edible characters needs finesse, do you rotoscope or rotisserie?

DB Sumo Sunriser Skateboard Headlights

DB Sumo Sunriser Skateboard Headlights 03/30/2005 09:10 AM

dbsumo_sunriser.jpgI have a long and silent war with the skaterats that live down my street, who have of late taken to calling themselves the 'Dobkings' (our street is 'Dobbin,' get it?) and spray painting their new stencils all over the street's dumpsters. I wage this war normally by walking down the street, using a hula-hoop motion and my gut's natural inertia to rotate my head, avoiding their smiles.

Next time, though, I will hit them with a blast from the Sunriser, the new headlamp system for skateboards from DB Sumo. It's designed to be installed between the trucks and deck of a skateboard, but will serve just as well as a distraction while I waddle the last forty feet around the corner. They're 20 bucks a pop, plus shipping.

MPGP Evolution of Sumo Robot Maneuvers 06/28/2004 02:43 PM
Jiming Liu of Hong Kong Baptist University and Shiwu Zhang of the University of Science and Technology of China have published a new paper on Multiphase Genetic Programming in the International Journal of Pattern Recognition and AI. The authors describe a genetic algorithm approach to evolving maneuvers for a sumo robot called Junior. Unlike prior papers on the subject, this one used a real robot rather than a simulation. IJPRAI is a proprietary journal that doesn't allow free access to articles but you can see an postscript version of the full paper on the HKBU website along with related information about multi-agent simulation of complex adaptive systems. The same authors also have a prior paper (PS format) on Multi-Phase learning in Sumo robots.

AP - Ernie Els and Ben Curtis made their share of birdies on a tough Muirfield Village course Thursday. What made them co-leaders in the first round of the Memorial was finishing with a par. The last two British Open champions scrambled for par on the 18th hole and wound up with 4-under 68s, the highest score to lead at the Memorial in 14 years.

Ben Curtis broke out fast in the second round with a 5-under par 31 on the front nine Friday, moving to 10 under for the tournament — two shots ahead of the yet-to-start Singh.

Be Careful What You Believe In

Be Careful What You Believe In 03/14/2005 05:38 PM
Beliefs are powerful, because they are not only the basis for our decisions, but also filters through which we view the world. We are constantly bombarded with huge volumes of information from our senses. Our eyes take in a full 120 degree sweep, much of this at a very high resolution, our ears are constantly responding to sounds, our sense of smell always probing the air around us for food or threats. The vast majority of this torrent of information is effectively ignored. Based on the information we get from the senses, we form a model of the world and it is this model, which forms the basis for our decisions. Absolute truth is out there, but in our heads everything is to a greater or lesser extent an interpretation. For any set of sensory data more than one interpretation is possible, and it is our beliefs, implicit and explicit, which we use to decide between the interpretations available.

Valotalo

« Valotalo by Jouko Kärkkäinen in the Forces of Light show in Plague Park. »

So, in one of those cases of 'be careful what you wish for', I have joined the ranks of those who wake up in the darkness and find their way to an office somewhere in the metropolis. It always sucks being the new person having to ask where the coffee, bathroom and coke machine are as well as having that dazed and glazed look as you're trying to remember the names of everyone you were introduced to. There is no shortage of stuff to do so I doubt I'll be bored. I'll have to try to keep from inflicting pictures of puppy cuteness on everyone, too. :)

On one of the metalink sites yesterday morning I noticed modern pooch which is a new doggie blog that could be a bit of light entertainment. On the side of not so light entertainment there is finland for thought [or lack thereof], the new blog by the inimitable "Mr. X", the American Libertarian who, unsurprisingly, finds plenty to gripe about in Finland. I encourage the Finns to abuse his lack of clue with enthusiasm. :)

Be Careful Where You Build

Be Careful Where You Build 03/08/2004 11:21 PM
For those of you who were deprived of this early childhood ritual, allow me to provide a bit of background. The song tells the tale of two men. The so-called "wise man" built his house on some sort of a rock, evidently a first-century precursor to modern concrete. Meanwhile, the "foolish man" was constructing his home on a foundation of sand. The song ends with each of these guys getting the results any grown-up would expect them to get. After all, if you're going to put your building on a bunch of sand, you should expect it to float away when the rains come.
