California State Senator Wants To Block
Gmail?

Okay, I have to admit that I don't really understand the uproar over Google's Gmail offering. The press has had a field day with all the negative attention that Gmail has been getting, and now a California state senator is even drafting legislation to ban Gmail. Why? Because "we think it's an absolute invasion of privacy. It's like having a massive billboard in the middle of your home." Hmm. No, it's not like that at all. It would be like that if a company gave me something of value in exchange for the ability to put a billboard in my house and I agreed to the deal - which seems like a perfectly reasonable transaction between two consenting parties. No one is being forced to use Gmail. If they don't like the fact that Google will put ads in the email client, they're free to not use it. In the meantime, there seem to be plenty of people who want to sign up for the service. Personally, I'll admit that I was invited into the beta and have been messing around with it. I'm pretty concerned about my privacy, but don't see anything wrong with what I've signed up for - and everyone who I've emailed to test the system out has asked me how they can get a Gmail account of their own.

What's The Matter With Kansas?

What's The Matter With Kansas? 04/12/2005 01:44 PM
An open letter to the Citizens of Atwood. This past week, the residents of the small town of Atwood, Kansas voted 984 to 113 to deny gay couples any rights for their relationships (including hospital visitation). Now, the man who set up the town's newspaper website has not only left Atwood, but taken down the website and posted a (mostly) measured response to the town in place of it. Will putting a human face on those being discriminated against ever change the minds of some people, or is one passage in the bible enough for some people to keep justifying their bigoted ways?

Sprint PCS to pay for, roll out airport Wi-Fi in Kansas City: As with many other airport situations, the company with the largest deal wins the contract, even though I believe that's not in the airport's best interest as a general policy. Sprint PCS will pay for the equipment, but the airport will eventually own it. The cost per day: $9.95. Sprint PCS hasn't announced unlimited monthly usage plans yet; they have said they will resell access to their network to others. The expense to build out the airport's Wi-Fi wasn't released....

Kansas City Public via RSS!

Kansas City Public via RSS! 05/25/2004 04:32 PM

How sweet is this?!

Kansas City Public Library RSS Feeds

"I just got an IM from David King at from the Kansas City Public Library, who linked me to the RSS Feeds for the numerous subject guides that they have on their web site. Not only do they have the feeds, but they have an explanation on RSS, which is key. Congrats to KCPL, David King, and his staff for being on the forefront of content delivery via RSS." [Library Stuff]

I've been waiting with great glee for this! At the Computers in Libraries conference in March, David King did a great presentation about KCPL's new web site. [Side note: I hope he's doing a write-up somewhere about it so that everyone understands just how cool it really is!]

One of the things that impressed me the most was their decision to group content by subject matter, rather than by format. One example David used was Harry Potter; rather than pointing to database articles on the topic in the "databases" section, listing the book titles in a separate section, linking to web sites in another section, displaying related events in still another section, etc., KCPL made a decision to group all of the HP stuff on a single page. That way, anyone looking for Harry Potter info could find everything in one place. I really like this approach, and it's one we've been trying to implement here at SLS. It's nice to have a model to show others what I mean.

Anyway, during the presentation, David noted that he was going to display subject information from external sites using RSS, which led to the natural question of whether KCPL would be offering its own feeds. I could tell by David's reaction to the question that the answer was "definitely," so I've been patiently waiting to see this in action.

Since I grew up in the Kansas City area, I'm especially thrilled to see KCPL leading the way with this, and you can bet I'm going to show off these links in my RSS class. I hope his administration is suitably impressed, even though they probably don't understand the whole thing (who does?). Congratulations to David and his staff!
