AT&T Wireless Offers 3G in Dallas and
San Diego
09/01/2004 09:52 AM
AT&T Wireless said it is offering its 3G network in Dallas and San Diego: San Diego should be a particularly interesting market as it will be the first in the country to have competing 3G services--Verizon Wireless already has its EV-DO network live there. It will also be interesting to watch if the two networks seem to have any affect on Wi-Fi usage. On a side note, AT&T Wireless cleverly uses the term "metropolitan hotspot" to describe the service in the two markets. That term is usually used to describe the stringing together of Wi-Fi hotspots to cover a large region or by WiMax-like technologies that aim to blanket a city. It's really a stretch to compare the AT&T Wireless service to Wi-Fi. AT&T Wireless says its network offers 220 kbps to 320 kbps, with bursts up to 384 kbps, while even 802.11b, depending on how many people are sharing a network, usually can deliver multiple megabits of throughput....

05/10/2004 05:35 PM
Answering the cry of system admins everyone, new system controls up to 16 servers over 802.11a with AES encryption: If you ever visit a server room, you see monitors and keyboards piled up or hung or inserted all over the place. These keyboards, video displays, and mouses (KVMs, in brief) are controlled through switches that are plugged into the servers. Avocent's AutoView Wireless cuts those cords and extends the range, removing clutter and wasted space from a valuable server room. With multiples of this unit, which lists at $595 each, admins can connect up to 16 servers to two workstations so that two admins can connect to the same set of 16. Some details are blurry that I'm trying to get clarification on: is there an intermediate KVM server to which the transceiver is connected? If you have several sets of 16 servers, can a single transceiver at the admin's station switch among those sets?...

Adventures in wireless security: Why
home and corporate wireless LANs are
insecure

Adventures in wireless security: Why
home and corporate wireless LANs are
insecure
06/03/2004 03:44 AM
The meat of the article is: “…Wireless security recommendations: Change your system defaults – everyone knows them. Change the Admin and SNMP passwords. Change the IP network range. Also change the Server Set ID (SSID). The SSID is a unique identifier for your wireless hub/router. The default SSID is set in the factory is definitely not unique. Don’t broadcast the SSID. While you can change the default ID, that does little if your hub or router broadcasts that SSID. Enable Wireless Encryption. WEP or something similar can be compromised, but it makes it significantly more difficult to compromise your information. The larger the key length, the better. Enable Shared Key Authentication. The default Open System setting lets anyone connect to your network with very minimal effort. Change your SNMP Community String. Create a Community String like it is a strong password. Enable MAC Address Codes. Again, this makes it more difficult for a hacker to compromise your home network. Set Wireless LAN cards to Infrastructure Mode. Most cards have the default Ad Hoc mode, which is less secure. Don’t rely only on the broadband firewall. A firewall at your home’s Internet entry point is critical. However, you should still have personal firewalls on all computers on your network, in case something makes it through your home’s firewall or a hacker does make it onto your network.”
