Customer demand for a ubiquitous
InfoPath runtime
Customer demand for a ubiquitous
InfoPath runtime
04/09/2004 03:56 PM
The last time I asked Microsoft why there's no plan to make the
InfoPath runtime ubiquitous, the answer I got was: "We don't hear
customers asking for it." Well, I do. Here's a typical rant from one
customer who, because his company has a relationship with Microsoft
that he doesn't want to jeopardize, asked me to anonymize his
comments:
I believe a primary requirement of a forms application is to make it
possible for the form to be completed by a wide audience of people
from
whom I wish to gather data. A key driver, at least in the world of my
customers, is to be able to distribute the form widely to people who
aren't necessarily connected to the network and get them to fill it in
and return it. I don't want to authenticate these people in my
network.
They won't install software on their computers just to fill out my
form.
They don't want to learn a new application.
It seems InfoPath has completely ignored the question of how the form
will actually be filled in by the responder. There is no free viewer
as
there is with Adobe Acrobat. There is no ability to save the form
template as an ASP.NET web form. It appears that Microsoft expects
everyone to purchase a full copy of InfoPath--the complete form design
application--just so they can fill out a form. They can't possibly
believe the product will gain any traction with this licensing and
deployment model, can they? [1] What are they thinking? [2]
So my main question is, is there any way to deploy InfoPath forms
without putting full InfoPath on every desktop? [3] Do you know
whether
Microsoft understands this issue and are planning anything to address
it? [4] The two applications that are widely available on everyone's
desktop are a web browser and Adobe Acrobat, and it seems like it
would
be a good idea for InfoPath to support forms deployment via one of
those
means. Am I missing something here? [5]

09/02/2004 07:44 PMJay Rosen: Independence From the Press Rocks the
Gatekeeper's World. There is a smear campaign launched against
John Kerry. But that is not the only thing going on with the Swift
Boat Veterans. The press may have knocked down the most serious
charges. But the idea of the press as the great adjudicator has also
been knocked down.
Jay is onto something important
here, and it worries me.
The thrust of his argument is that the Swift Boat smear campaign
remains successful on despite the mainstream media's exhaustive
coverage debunking its credibility. The right-wing mediasphere of
blogs, talk radio, Fox and other outlets has given it legs.
The explosion of new voices is manifestly a positive development. So,
too, is people's willingness to be skeptical of mainstream media's We
Are the Purveyors of Truth routine.
But the extent to which lies take on currency remains truly scary.
It's been this way for a long time, in all media, but the Net works
faster. Smears work. Truth struggles to catch up with lies in the
short term, even if it does in the end. We should all worry about
this.

Checking In On The Dot Com Dropouts
Checking In On The Dot Com Dropouts
09/22/2004 05:16 PMDuring the bubble years, it was pretty common for students to drop out
of college to start their own company or to join a promising startup.
Of course, for many, once the bubble burst that didn't work out so
well. Red Herring has gone out and
checked in with some students who dropped out during the
bubble years to see how well things turned out. While most
weren't particularly successful (and, in some cases, it looks like
their inexperience may have caused some of the problems), all still
believed it was worth the shot -- even if the end result wasn't what
they hoped for. Only one student out of the four interviewed has
returned to complete his undergraduate degree (while another is slowly
catching up on credits). While they may not have been as successful
as they hoped, it looks like all of them got some sort of education in
what starting a business really entails -- even if it's not always fun
and games (and lots and lots of cash) as some people seemed to think.

Blog-checking a congresscritter
05/23/2004 04:35 PMMy pal Pat Berry has decided to keep a close watch on Wally Herge, the
rep from California's Second Congressional District, who is Pat's
congresscritter. So Pat's sending him letters, asking him to answer
for the government's mess in Iraq -- and other messes -- and blogging
the congresscritter's form responses, with detailed, hyperlinked
critiques. Pat doesn't expect Herge to stop talking bullshit as a
result of being fact-checked, but he has high hopes for being a
prominent search-engine result for the query "Wally Herge".
While there are no obvious points of contention here, it is meant to
misdirect us from the fact that prisoner torture is wrong by pointing
out that people want to hurt us. There will never be a time in history
when somebody, somewhere will not want to hurt the United States or
see us fail. In no way does this condone the torture of prisoners. It
never has and it never will. Trying to associate the investigation
with American weakness is a dirty trick. Compassion and a show of
humanity is not weakness, nor is showing concern for a group of people
other than ourselves. Also we must not let the fact that good things
happen shield us from the horrors that happen in Iraq, they must be
dealt with. For those honestly curious about the progress being made
in Iraq, USAID has a site with extensive records and archives.

Checking To See If Someone Read Your
Email
05/20/2004 03:50 AMUSA Today is talking about a new service called
DidTheyReadIt that claims it can
tell you whether or not anyone is opening emails that you've
sent, how long they spend with the emails and whether or not they
forward them on. It's a for-fee service that requires you to send all
of your email through their server. Basically, you append a
didtheyreadit.com to the end of every email that you send, and their
server does whatever black magic it does and passes the email on - at
which point you can track it. Jeremy Wagstaff has been writing about
them over the past few days and
expressed plenty of concerns over the offering. He already uses a
similar product - but which lets you clearly tell people that you're
tracking what they do with the email. He's also worried about the
company, especially since their other products are all about spying on
people as well - such as a keylogger. Would you trust such a company
to have all of your email on their server? The founder of
DidTheyReadIt replied to him in
two separate parts that do little to ease the concerns. This is the
type of thing that people are (as the USA Today article points out)
likely to flip out about - at the same time many will be intrigued to
use it themselves. The thing that I wonder about, however, is how
does it actually work? I'm guessing it needs to stick some sort of
HTML bug into the email - a popular trick among spammers to determine
whether or not you've opened their email and are "a live one." Of
course, these days, you simply shouldn't use HTML email - at least not
initially until you know a message is "safe." So, despite the fact
that the service claims it works on "all" email systems, I wonder how
well it actually works on anyone who avoids HTML-based emails. With
new email systems like Gmail which smartly make anyone go through an
extra step to view HTML-based email (though, they should set up rules
to allow HTML email from a certain address), others may follow suit -
especially if people get concerned about services like DidTheyReadIt.
