Some people have been critical about the lack of fact checking and vetting I do before I post an article or a link. I've argued that my posts are really the beginning of a discussion and not a definitive assertion or the final word. I really think about my blog as a group effort with the people who comment here.

I was reading Yochai Benkler's paper, "Coase's Penguin, or Linux and the Nature of the Firm", (which I highly recommend) and saw a reference to this from Slashdot's FAQ which I think sums up my feelings as well.

A: We don't. You do. :) If something seems outrageous, we might look for some corroboration, but as a rule, we regard this as the responsibility of the submitter and the audience. This is why it's important to read comments. You might find something that refutes, or supports, the story in the main.

Agreed, a blog is a bit different from slashdot, but please. Read the comments. That's where most of the really interesting stuff goes on.

There's been a fascinating uproar in cyberspace about the estimable Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia I discussed here early this year and in the book. One of the topics was whether a site written entirely by its readers -- and where every page can be edited by anyone -- could meet any kind of "standards" of accuracy and reliablity. The latest tempest was stirred by this column in a Syracuse, NY, newspaper, in which a librarian is quoted dumping on Wikipedia for various reasons. It gets complicated from there. Thankfuly, Ross Mayfield has deconstructed the debate with lots of links and good quotes. Read the whole thing.

A Japanese academic who wrote an anonymous P2P app has been arrested for "abetting infringement." This is the kind of perversion of justice we're accustomed to seeing in the US and Norway -- disappointing that the Japanese have so thoroughly bridged the copyright hysteria gap. The programmer faces three years in prison for writing code that allows for anonymous file-transfers. We can only hope that the team that led Microsoft's operating-system effort will be next, followed by the AppleShare team and the pesky authors of ftp.

Mr Isamu Kaneko, a 33-year-old assistant professor at the prestigious University of Tokyo, was arrested on suspicion of developing and offering free downloads on his Web site file-sharing software called Winny, Kyoto Prefectural (state) police said on condition of anonymity.

He is also accused of helping two Japanese men arrested in November on charges of disseminating movies and games on the Internet with Winny, police said.
