AP - Many sign their names. Many don't. They're the book reviewers on Amazon.com who use such words as "masterful," "page-turner" and "tear-jerker." But the ones who sign their critiques only as "a reader from (fill in the city)" lost their anonymity this week when their identities were revealed on Amazon.com's Canadian Web site.

Happy Holidays everybody! It's that time of year when it seems our biggest identity problem is "Will I remember who and where I am if I have another round of egg nog?" But there's one guy who goes through a major identity crisis each year at this time.

How do you know you are at a geek conference? People get introduced to you by their IRC nicks, and you don't actually realize until the next morning that you still don't know their real names, despite having met them in real life.

(Oh yeah, and I *do* love bagels. I only wish we could get some decent ones back home. I may have to carry a few back...)

The best thing about identities - is
that there are so many of them

We used to use that line when we referred to standards.

Wi shing that the world would coalesce around a single standard:

a) ignores the fact that there is Microsoft. So choose your category wisely and stay under the radar, as Microsoft - no matter what - will come up with their own thing. In the case of subscription formats - they actually PRECEDED RSS with something called CDF. But since it failed, that gave Dave Winer an opportunity of getting RSS going "user the radar" until it was too late for Microsoft to stop him.

b) assuming that there will ever be a single digital identity standard - is wrong. Kim Cameron raps out his beliefs - which he calls "The Fifth Law of Identity". I totally agree with Kim that a meta-identity format is needed to brdge and connect together all of these disparate systems.

c) is rather naive and clearly sees the digital identity space as one thing. It's not. What digital identity is to the FOAF nerds or Tantek Celik's XFN cult is completely different than how the i-names folks or Sxip Network sees it. And I haven't even brought up the enterprise wonks - lile PingID. Or the god head Craig Burton or his nemisis Kim Cameron. We all see this space as something completely different.

So - by definition - we (at best) can at least hope for some sort of meta-standard.

God bless the meta-directory gods.

UPDATE: Craig Burton raps it our succinctly - like only he can.

The law of pluralism is contrary to the laws of customer control. Let's be clear, the law of pluralism requires operating system independence--by definition. This means the Microsoft Identity Archtiect is calling for a system that is not necissarily Windows centric by design. This--of course--is the only way such a system can really work--but consider the implications.

A cross platfrom identity metasystem sun-spot hot and--with the other laws being discussed here--changes everything.

New project and identities

New project and identities 01/02/2004 03:33 AM

Jeff Nichols has been working for almost a year on an intranet project for a large company. Jeff’s a smart guy with an interesting blog. That tells me that his project is probably interesting with lots of tough problems to solve. Thanks to Jeff, I’m now working on that project as well. The project is fascinating but I’m not sure how much I’ll be able to share about it; probably not much more than anecdotes and general things learned. I’ll find out more about that when I get started next week.

The structure of the project is a bit interesting. I’ll be working for a consulting shop who has the contract with the end client. The project isn’t a full time gig, although it will keep me quite busy the next two months, but the consulting shop asked me to become a part-time employee in order to simplify their accounting. So for the first time in more than two years I’m an employee again. I’ll be working remotely, dealing directly with the client, and largely setting my own hours, so it’s much the same as what I’ve been doing for the last couple of years. Still, something about being an employee feels different.

This change has made me think once again about my professional identity. I started a blog entry on the subject almost exactly one year ago but never finished it, partly because I couldn’t effectively put my thoughts into words. And partly was because I figured no one would really care. I was thinking too much about my audience and not enough about myself. But I find that I think about the subject often and writing about it helps my thoughts coalesce. What I’m trying to say is that for the rest of this entry I’m writing for me. If you aren’t me you might not be particularly interested in what follows.

I started consulting two years ago when the company I was working for went under. It was the third time in 12 months that I’d been laid off when a startup went under. I was laid off (the third time) on October 31, 2001 as the economy was softening. After looking for a job and collecting unemployment for a while, I ended up with a bit of contract work for projects run by people I knew from past companies. A few months later, I decided to formalize the contracting I was doing and converted this site from a personal site and blog to a site advertising my services and professional blog. You can still see the old site in se veral incarnations (mostly without stylesheets or images) in the Internet Archive.

Since then I’ve waffled between wanting to appear as a big company and positioning myself as an independant consultant. What I’ve finally decided on is being myself. People that want to hire me for a project want to hire me, not a faceless company. People hire me for my experience and expertise, not because I have a team of people ready to swing into action for them. The voice of this blog is mine, the thoughts and ideas presented here are mine. If you like them, perhaps you’ll hire me. If not, then we probably wouldn’t have worked well together anyway. (I even experimented with writing this blog as we instead of I, but I didn’t like it.)

So that’s who I am, an independent consultant. Perhaps one day I’ll be in such demand that I’ll need to hire a staff to help with the work, but for now it’s just me. So if you want to talk to me about some work, whether it’s a small project, a short- or long-term contract, or even a permanent position with your company, let me know.

Using Cameraphones to Steal Identities

Using Cameraphones to Steal Identities 12/24/2004 12:16 PM

thief_caph.jpg imageThere's a bit of a scare story on Florida Today about criminals using cameraphones to steal personal information from you, like credit card numbers or ATM PINs. While no arrests have been made—in fact, it's all speculation!—there's an important lesson we can learn from all of this: pay for everything by trading bales of home-spun quilts.

Ohio liquor cops steal citizen
identities, and it's legal?
04/13/2005 03:52 AM
Xeni Jardin: State liquor officials in Ohio hired a woman to pose undercover as a stripper -- and gave her someone else's driver's license for an assumed identity, based on a bizarre interpretation of state law.
Haley Dawson has never been a stripper. But Ohio liquor-control agents took her identity and gave it to a 22-year-old college student who they had recruited to work undercover as a nude dancer.

As part of an investigation that resulted in nothing more than misdemeanor charges, police paid University of Dayton criminal-justice student Michelle Szuhay $100 a night to take it all off in early 2003 — as liquor-control officers drank beer and watched in the audience for three months, court papers show.

Other officers watched her strip on the Internet, using an account created under the identity of a dead man. The officers did all this by using Dawson’s driver’s license and Social Security number to hide Szuhay’s identity while she worked at the targeted strip club, the now-closed Total Xposure in Troy. To Dawson’s father, David Dawson, "It certainly looks like identity theft."

WSJ Exposes Wi-Fi Range Woes

WSJ Exposes Wi-Fi Range Woes 03/06/2004 01:49 AM
Wall Street Journal talks to home Wi-Fi users who can't seem to get the range they need even on small homes: It's a growing problem, and well explored in this article, that home users are finding that Wi-Fi's limited range can't cover an entire ranch-style home, much less a big apartment--or one with thick walls. The article mentions several solutions, all of which involve additional access points or devices that promise more range. It misses just one of my favorite solutions: HomePlug. HomePlug lets you run 14 Mbps over home electrical wiring, and even has a Wi-Fi access point version to extend a network into areas that a signal otherwise wouldn't reach....
