MSN to swat pop-ups in Europe 02/14/2004 09:21 AM

Those mosquito-like pop-up and pop-under Web advertisements could be headed for rapid extinction, now that Microsoft has decided to phase them out across its MSN Internet units around the globe by the summer.

Kevin Sites bl0g from Iraq: Hilla SWAT

Kevin Sites bl0g from Iraq: Hilla SWAT 09/23/2004 11:14 AM
Xeni Jardin: NBC combat correspondent and blogger Kevin Sites is back in Iraq, and posts a new dispatch with some amazing photos on his blog today.
We've been up since 3am--waiting for Hilla SWAT. It's now 4:30. Despite their annoyance--the Force Recon squad from the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit seems extremely patient--at least around Kuni Takahashi, a photographer for the Chicago Tribune and me. Instead they look at their watches--bullshit each other about their individual depravities--like masturbating in sweat socks. Typical life details at a military FOB or forward operating base in Iraq.

These marines at FOB Kalsu still sleep in tents, shit in porta-johns, live in the dirt. This is no Camp Victory green zone paradise with guys chilling in air-conditioned trailers and eating at the Bob Hope Dining Facility--a zeppelin hangar of a building just down the road from Baghdad International Airport. Everyone here has heard the stories--or maybe, been on a convoy through the green zone, briefly glimpsed the way that other half lives. They piss and moan about it--but don't denounce its existence. They are, after all, Americans--it's about aspirations--still believing that hard work and perseverance may someday get you to the Promised Land.

Stowe does Europe

Stowe does Europe 06/21/2004 08:30 PM

Like any true blue American Stowe Boyd is doing Europe this summer - just when the airfares go up.

What a coincidence - I am too! But I'm waiting till the end of the summer, to do a house trade in Amsterdam. That way I can make it to the FOAF confab and do a series of "micro-content" dinners in NYC, London, Trieste and Amsterdam (twice.)

Here's Stowe's itinery. I definitely wanna meet his friend George.

Down and Out in London, Amsterdam, and Nice

Turns out that I will be roaming the European landmass next month, with Greg Narain, like a very small band of Vandals.

* London - I am speaking at the Symposium on Social Tools in the Enterprise, 12 July, a get-together I have blogged on a few times already.
* I will be speaking somewhere in Amsterdam on 13 July: Social Tools: Get Connected in the Post-Everything Economy. My buddy, George Witteveen is the organizer, if you are interested in learning about time/locale.
* 14-15 July, I will be in Nice, at the iDate conference, talking about the 'Third Space' that online community provides.

I look forward to meeting with Get Real readers in these cities. Contact me if you have any questions about these events.

Greetings from Central Europe!

Greetings from Central Europe! 04/25/2004 09:51 AM

To calibrate, when it's 3:20PM here, it's 9:20AM in Boston, and 6:20AM in California. As predicted, no sleep on the plane. Got into Amsterdam via train from the airport at 8AM local time, waited in the hotel lobby, met some people from the UK, went to breakfast, waited some more in the hotel lobby, they took pity on me and gave me the first available room at 10:30AM, I showered and slept and woke up at 3PM or so, and immediately (of course) had to figure out how to get online.

Which proved to be a puzzle. They had no power on the airplane last night, but I read about it in the online magazine. They said sometimes you have to pull the battery on your laptop to get it work because the laptop-plus-battery consumes too much juice, but the laptop-itself is okay. When I plugged the laptop into the converter, the light on the power-brick would pulse and the machine would start up and then hibernate, over and over. I tried to charge my iPod and it wouldn't charge. So I tried pulling the battery on the laptop and voila, it runs. So I am able to get online (for 17.5 euro a day, what a ripoff) but my battery isn't charging, which is a problem I have to solve. Any suggestions, send them here.

So why do you tune into Radio Dave? I hope it's for insights like this. When you arrive in Europe, as I did today, you realize how strange the place you live is. We don't have wind mills. We don't have great train stations under our airports. We don't have giant ferris wheels in the central square of our nation's capital to celebrate our queen, and we don't have a queen. But I'll tell you one thing we share. TCP/IP and 802.11b. Amidst all the childish squabbling of tech companies and their infantile engineers, and pundits who steer markets toward higher consulting fees (for them), we managed to get some really nice compatibility. My power adapter may not work here, but my XML-RPC stack does.

the "democracy" that is Europe

the "democracy" that is Europe 03/14/2005 05:51 PM
So despite the fact that the EU Parliament has rejected software patents for Europe, and despite the fact that there is not a qualified majority of member states supporting it, the EU Council has now endorsed their draft of the "Directive on the Patentability of Computer-Implemented Inventions." This struggle continues to astonish me. There's no good economic evidence that software patents do more good than harm. That's the reason the US should reconsider its software patent policy. But why Europe would voluntarily adopt a policy that will only burden its software developers and only benefit US interests is beyond me. They call it a "democracy" that they're building in Europe. I don't see it. Instead, they have created a government of bureaucrats, more easily captured by special interests than anything in the US.
