Friday the 13th at SLS

Friday the 13th at SLS 02/13/2004 02:31 PM

It's Crazy Sock Day at SLS, and you can see the entries on our terribly unofficial moblog! All of the pictures were taken with my Treo 600 or Kate's Samsung VGA-1000.

We're having great fun playing with Kate's new phone. It's got a camera with a flash, fun ringtones, Java for games, and a 14-day free trial of iKTV television! I took some pictures of the screens and posted them on my moblog.

Friday the 13th: Bad Luck

Friday the 13th: Bad Luck 02/14/2004 02:26 AM

Today was definitely Friday the 13th.

I don't post about the office on this weblog very often, but today was just one of those days. I'm a sales manager at work, and today, my "star performer" told me she had been offered a job at another company.

That means she's leaving.

Ugh... can't tell you how hard that hit me.

You see, I've been trying to build a new business around online advertising sales for my company for the past year and a half, and I've spent a lot of time teaching, training, and learning. I've really put a lot into getting my "star performer" to the level that she's at right now. When I started at the office, this person was pretty green. I had to mold her into the sales person I needed her to be, and she took it well. Very well, and she's become successful.

This year, my company gave her an award for improving so much. That made me feel very good about what I was doing and where we were heading.

Then, today, she tells me she's leaving.

As her friend, I can't help but be happy for her, and excited about her opportunities... but as her boss, I can't help but feel overwhelmed and stressed about the pressure this will put on top of all of the rest of the pressure I've put myself under trying to build this new part of our business.

We'll get buy without this "star performer" but this sets up back a few steps.

I'll post a note on Monday about the opening I need to fill, but, if you know someone in Austin that wants to sell online advertising at a local media company, please send me their resume.

Misc. Apple News

Misc. Apple News 03/14/2005 04:34 PM
There are many news items concerning Apple over the weekend, some good and some not so good. Let's throw them all in a one news article and see what happens.

Apple won round one of their court case to divulge the sources of the three online publications. There will be at least one appeal, but the foundation has been laid and a strong precedent has been set which denies journalistic rights to online publications and blogs. It's tough for Apple fans to see their company turning into another Microsoft where fiscal concerns over-shadow the people concerns.

On a high note, the best is getting better. In a surprise move, the next version of OSX, Tiger, is being rumored to have an April 15th release date. When I was at MacWorld in January, Jobs told us that Tiger would be out in Mid 2005. This would be sooner then expected. OSX is considered the Cadillac of operating systems and the improvements in Tiger will make it the OS to have.

We also seen another appearance of CherryOS, a Mac emulator for PCs. According to folks that have looked at the code in CherryOS, it has many similarities to PearPC. Best thing is to leave the dust settle before getting involved with this project.

Origins of the things we do and say

Origins of the things we do and say 12/18/2003 01:01 PM
The vast majority of actions or words we use today are things we saw or heard from others. Many of these things we put too little thought into. Some questions we can ask ourselves can lead to interesting facts. Why do some countries drive on the right and others on the left? Why do we say "bless you" when someone sneezes? Why did rounded knifes appear in 1669? And why do we hit glasses when drinking amongst friends? Answers to these questions and other anecdotes follow for the pleasure of the reader. Some of them are just stories I heard, others I've read in a book or online. In all cases I could be wrong. You as the reader can participate in debunking any of the stories I present.

13th-century standards

13th-century standards 04/26/2004 08:53 AM
Traveling in France in 2001, I visited Chartres Cathedral and was lucky enough to show up in time for Malcolm Miller's lecture. Seemingly unchanged from the last time I'd seen him, in 1978, Miller again made the architecture and stained glass come alive in his inimitable way. This time, though, I heard something I hadn't the first time -- about standards. When the construction project drew in artisans from the 13th-century French countryside, the first order of business was to agree on standard weights and measures. I wonder what those negotiations were like! ...

Historical origins of obesity

Historical origins of obesity 05/27/2004 02:52 AM
Long, interesting Harvard Magazine article about the historical shifts in diet and lifestyle that led to America's obesity epidemic.
"We are not adapted to handle fast-acting carbohydrates," Ludwig continues. "Glucose is the gold standard of energy metabolism. The brain is exquisitely dependent on having a continuous supply of glucose: too low a glucose level poses an immediate threat to survival. [But] too high a level causes damage to tissues, as with diabetes. The body is designed to keep blood glucose within a tight range, and it does this beautifully, even with extreme nutrient ratios: we can survive indefinitely on a diet of 60 percent carbohydrates and 20 percent fat, or 20 percent carbohydrates and 60 percent fat. But we never [before] had to assimilate a heavy dose of high-glycemic carbohydrates."

Xeni Jardin: Click on thumbnail pics in this post for full-size. Following up on yesterday's Boing Boing post about the forthcoming Christie's auction "The Origins of Cyberspace," reader Mike Ransom says:

"One of the items in this auction is the Brainiac Electric Brain Kit, circa 1966 (aka Geniac in the U.S) Insulated wire, battery box, circular masonite multiple-switch disks, and brass jumpers. A kit to teach children the principles of electronic digital computing, designed by Edmund Berkeley, who worked on the Harvard Mark I and II computers. Value: $800-1,200.

"Here is a picture of me in 1967 with a Geniac, an analog computer, a Think-A-Dot, Digi-Comp I and Dr. Nim. I just posted it to the photo section of a Yahoo Group devoted to these early mechanical computers: Link.

"Almost 40 years later, I only have the Digi-Comp I and the one on which I'm typing this note."
